When kayaking I always carry a sponge about the size of a gallon. can cut it out of an old couch cushion and it removes water quickly out of your kayak. one gallon of water equals about 8 pounds. it will also pick up water that bilge pump wont.

Yes it will pick up water that a pump cannot but when your hull has been breached that isn't a priority.
A pump can remove water much faster from a flooded kayak.
You attempt to pump the water out to regain enough stability for getting safely to shore.
Don't worry about that last gallon or two.

Yep. I just got one of the big ones at Windsor Walmart.
Also......
Probably better to get a second pump than worry about carrying an open cell sponge if you're worried that your primary pump might fail. I've seen breached kayaks that only quickly alternating between pumping and paddling got the person in. An open cell sponge may not have worked. Just sayin.
