How long would it take a lingcod to digest a 12-inch canary rockfish and how long might that sustain the lingcod?   This one had other fish in his stomach and was still going for my sardine bait.

I did not fillet the canary.

Man them Lingcod are savages!!! Cool catch Sakyak. I bet you really must of been trippin when that ling came up with such a huge belly... and now we know we can use other rockies up to 12" as Ling bait. Whoo!

How big is that ling??
I had one using 12'' bait on opening day. Unfortunately he piggy backed the whole way and I was not successful at the gaff. The hitch hiker was a biggun!

The ling was only just over 25 inches but thick even without the canary in his belly.  When I saw the head I was sure he would be over 30-inches but no such luck.

I don't believe the bioenergetics of the lingcod have been scientifically worked out, but I can ask so of the folks that Bodega Marine Lab who feed the lingcod how much it will eat.  I suspect that a lingcod could digest that rockfish in less than a day, and if that where the only thing it ate would sustain it for a good while, although that really depends on a lot of variables.  I'd say a lingcod would eat at least 1-2 of those a day, if given the chance.

I'm not a fish scientist, but that seems like a really high amount of eating for that fish.

snakes get big, and only eat once a week or even just once a month.

I'm kind of thinking that lings eat more than other fish, and will stuff themselves opportunistically
but often go several weeks without eating.

What species have the "bioenergetics" been worked out for? salmon? tuna? any cold water fish?

I recently caught this Ling at Bean Hollow....interestingly, I had hooked onto a 9 inch black RF and as I was reeling it up, a 35 inch ling follwed it and latched on to it....so I brought it up slowly and Just before I could net it, the Ling released AND THEN came back for it right away  :smt118....and the interesting thing is that I sliced the stomach open as soon as I got home and saw that it had another 9 inch RF inside it's belly.

How can this Ling eat more when it's belly hardly had any room for another fish? Do their bellies expand even more? I had a similar catch with a LMB. I caught a nice one with a rattle trap only to find an 8 inch trout still in it's throat - it was not even fully digested  and the bass STILL went for the lure  :dontknow:

here's the ling and it's big belly....

I think they just keep eating and pukeing till it stays down. :smt005 They seem to like puked up octopus and fight over whatever another ling is chewing on! :smt044

I have kept many aquarium fish that would gorge themselves until they couldn't swallow anymore and then swim around with a fish in their mouth.

I think a lot of fish feed until the food is gone.

i had days in carmel when ling season was closed, i would feed ling cod to make them content. i had one ling about 30" eat about 5 x 4-5" blue rf off the tip of my spear. the 5th one was hard to feed as he was pretty full and just layed there.

i wonder if he is still there. i should go see soon.

This one had no problems attacking my horse herring ... even though it had a 5 pound salmon in it's belly.  BTW, the tail was still shiny and new.  So new that I thought the salmon was recently eaten.  However, shortly after I snapped this pic, it coughed up the salmon.  The rest of the salmon was half digested, no skin, and meat falling off the bone.
