I've been contemplating the right boat to paddle / fish in lakes with my 4-year old boy Carson.  Something that we can both ride in comfortably good stability, and something with room to move around.

After much searching, I decided on the Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 tandem.  Drove up to Sacramento and picked it up on Saturday from Adventure Mountain Sports (2008 model).  Carson is pretty stoked and so is his Dad.

This boat is basically a hybrid between a kayak and a canoe.  Not a sit on top / self bailing boat, but that wasn't important for me since I won't be taking my young kids out in anything but calm conditions.  It has enough weight capacity for myself and another (normal size) adult and should be ideal for myself and one or two kidlets.

It has about the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in a kayak and I think they'll even pass "the big guy test" with ease.  The boat is very configurable.  Seats can be placed in multiple positions and orientation as either a tandem or solo boat.  Spray skirts are available for the bow, stern, and the whole boat if you desire.

Overall I like the innovation and quality that I see out of native watercraft.  I'll post a review after we've logged some hours on the water and after I get it rigged for fishing.

Any word on how fast you can get that going solo or tandem?
