Thermocline on fish finders

I've read that if you adjust the sensitivity on your ff you can locate the thermocline in the water. My question is how much do you adjust the sensitivity and how do you know if you see it? Heading up to Berryessa tmw and am hoping to catch my first Kokanee.

I have not heard of any Kokanee at Berry at all this year.

 
  I've seen a thermocline once while on Loch Lomond, (Ben Lomond) years ago when I had my 12' Alum boat.  Don't remember adjusting the sensitivity on my FF then, but the line clearly showed on the screen.  Don't recall the exact depth, but I think it below 60-70 feet.  it showed up as a solid strip across the screen, above the lake floor, which was not flat, so it wasn't a secondary return.

seeing the thermocline is based on how defined it is.  If its very defined you shouldn't have to adjust anything.  if its not very defined or if there is more than one you might have to adjust your sensitivity all the way up.

So as your adjusting your sensitivity you will start to get a lot of noise, spots poping up every where.  The thermocline is basically spots poping up in a straight line at a particular depth.  Don't forget you can have more than one or none.  If the water temp decreases evenly all the way to the bottom then you won't have a thermocline.  Google some youtube videos, once you see it a time or two its pretty easy to pick out.
