How much line do I need to rig on my traps to fish TC?

Commercial guys setting in that area seldom drop pots less than 200 feet. There may be sand patches closer here and there that have crabs but you will need a lot of line.

Last week end I set a trap at 80 and 60.  I didn't even get a rock or red crab.  I believe you need to get into 125 ft minimum to have a chance.  The commercial guys go 150 - 200.  I did get four large unis however.  Their gonads were tasty. :smt003

How much line do I need to rig on my traps to fish TC?

I've been told 200' deep.  That is about 1.5-2 miles offshore from there.

2 years ago we did quite well at 150-200 ft.
It’s a long paddle.

Oh jeez... I don't want to haul a trap 200 feet on a kayak... and I don't want to store 200 feet of rope on kayak.. Am I being punked? I set 3 traps off Fort Ross today in 40' of water on a sand bottom...for 1 undersize dungie, 1 undersize rocky... I chatted with the owners of 6 other traps.. no keeper dungies to show for it....and I'm wondering what the biology is behind this.  Are crabs headed into estuaries and lower salinity particularly?

You are welcome to try shallow water as many times as you would like... just relaying what I've been told about the area.   Let us know if you happen to catch a keeper  :smt002.
