By day, I'm an attorney.
At night, I'm still that same attorney who hasn't finished his work to prepare for the next day's deposition, but who still makes time to get on the NCKA forum during breaks to check out posts, dream about RF season opener and eventually going to sleep to repeat the cycle.

I have a wonderful wife and 2 kids who help me with the reality check and remind me of who I really work for.

I run the Asia Pacific operations for a small software company (storage virtualization software). Been with them from startup phase 10 years ago!

By night I take calls from the various territory heads from Japan to Australia while puttering with fishing and kayak gear in the garage - usually with a Racer5 in hand, and Jimi Hendrix in the background.

First baby on the way with my Japanese wife of 18 years. (Funny, in my head I'm still in my late 20's but the mirror keeps showing a 42 year old man...)

Was an owner of a small food business, wife is a very talented epidemiologist. She got tired of me being gone all the time and working 60 hours or more a week, and being housewife.  She got a contract job doing mortality research for a big lab in 2000. In 2001 the contract was for full time long term. She demanded I sell the business and be house daddy so she could work full time.

Her business has blossomed not only does she do cutting edge research but she is also a top expert witness in the legal world, in areas of life expediency and insurance contract misrepresentation.
And even better she works from home.

So I get to help her with her research and be house daddy, fish and dive. Once my two boys get out of college I might have some extra spending money!!!

LMU Dave,

I think I might be a firefighter.  I fish more days than I work, I watch too much TV, I spend too much time on NCKA, I love ice cream and I get paid when I’m sleeping.  Since I don’t go grocery shopping in a fire engine, Maybe I'm not be a fire fighter.   Actually I’m a retired cop who spent enough time at the fire stations to be glad that both of my son’s are firefighters.

Thanks for all that you guys (and gals) do for us.

For the last few years, I've worked as a marketing writer/editor at an analog IC company. I develop PRs, print ads, white papers, engineering articles, web content, brochures, et cetera, ad nauseum. I also do freelance work sometimes, though my day job keeps me busy enough.

Prior to this job, I spent several years as a PhD candidate in English and, briefly, history, before becoming disillusioned with the academic job market (and salary scales!).  :smt011

Stormscambler, check out USAJOBS, there are always FF positons on there, either with Golden Gate Natl Park (temp positon), Fort Ord, Camp Parks, National Forest, Moffet, National Parks.  If you aren't an EMT or Paramedic it is harder to get picked up.  I highly recommend getting Nationally Registered as at least an EMT, the Feds look at that hard.  Hope that helps, check the site often as jobs rotate weekly.

I have several hats which why I lurk instead of fishing.  1.  I recenlty left one company to work at the VA.  I work in the Rural Health Program so me and my big truck get out there to remote areas in the Palo Alto VA area.  I love it, being a Vet It is great to get out there and help fellow Vets of all generations.

2. National Guard Warrant Officer,  the we can give you as much aggrevation one weekend a month and two weeks a year as a regular job can....did I say that? GF wants me to retire after my next promotion.  Like some of the rest of you mentally I still think I am 21, physically after a couple of weeks in the field (no fishing involved), I feel like I am a WWII Vet.

3. Grad Student, I am on my last class and I will have a Masters in Emergency Management.  One time I was asked what do you do with a degree like that...It took me a moment and I told them if the alert siren goes out, I will be the calm but firm voice telling you to get your butt under the desk when the big one happens...lol

In what little spare time I have, I am building a motorcycle, restoring a meat slicer, looking for deals at Goodwill and thrift shops where ever I can find them, grilling/smoking/BBQ any piece of meat foolish enough to be around when I am firing up the Weber. Lastly I long for the day when I can go up to where Mooch is heading to and land some of those mythical Alaskan fish!

Im in life insurance and financial planning.   A few years ago I had enough spare time to start a small landscape business, mainly to get my butt out of the office.  (and its the landscaping thats been keeping me off the yak the past month or two..  :smt013)     Prior to that I had an IT startup for 10 years that was mostly involved in broadband communication hookups (DSL, cable and etc) which got very large and then ended up imploding with the rest of the dot industry.   Before that I was the landscape maint supervisor at Cheateau St. Jean winery in Kenwood for 18 years.

It's Really a Great Job and you guys that mentioned wanted to get into this career, well, the Best Advice I can give is " Never Give UP!!!! "

All those " Failures " in trying to get the job are merely learning lessons in trying to figure out the Game of getting hired, and it is a game, and a commitment and not letting anything distract you in your goal. It usually takes about 5 years of total commitment and taking many oral boards, backgrounds etc  etc...

I wanted to do it all my life, but for one reason or another, was sidelined. It wasn't till I was married with twin boys that I finally knuckled down and went thru my Final Tower at the young age of 39.....  ouch.....  :icon_weelchairbb:

I'm the Managing Partner (boss) of a small IT consulting firm, www.oocio.com.  We are mostly ex Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Big 4 consulting Partners that wanted to get off the treadmill. If anyone needs to figure out what to do with their company's IT, then do it, we're here for you.

Spare time is 12 yr old twins, boy and girl.  We spend all of our spare time outside.  I'm turning them into fishaholics on every body of water we find and crabbers on an Arima 19.  My son makes lures and ties flies out of junk in the garage and my daughter has the Zen touch and catches fish with them when no one else does.

My day was made last year while my daughter was sitting on the tail gate of the truck after a morning of trout fishing at Shadow Cliffs in the Scanoe and said; "This sure beats sitting on the couch playing video games."  So I guess its working.

I credit my wife for getting us into sea kayaking 17 years ago.  I've been yakking for abalone and touring ever since but only started fishing freshwater from a Wilderness Pungo a few years ago.  I have yet to fish in salt water from one.  I'm an assistant scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts Troop 301 in Belmont and lead them on a yak expedition every April in Monterey bay.

Like many here I spent a ton of time on the MLPA process through Coastside FC.  (I was sitting next to the mike when the Seal Head dude did his schtick in San Rafael.)

I'm in the process of reconfiguring my fleet (down to 5 now from 6) to have a proper fishing yak.  Still in the pedal v. paddle decision.  Took a demo ride at CCK last week.  Thinking Revolution, Outback or OK T13.  Too many orthaepedic issues to lug around a larger, heavier boat.  Will keep you posted on the search.

My normal occupation has been a CNC laser operator. But with the down economy, and after being laid off, I found myself running a small oil change shop up here in our small community. I do light mechanical work as well. Keeps me busy, but I would rather be using my brain. I miss the geometrical math to get jobs done!

Retired from the Fire Service after 31 years.  My other  job is helping my kids launch into the world.  One out of college with an audio engineering degree looking for work and the other in JC pursuing the fire service.  I freelance as a grip for a buddy of mine at LMA productions from time to time just for fun.  My other/other/other job is working with my wife in her travel agency-usually testing out her trips!(all must have a fishing component).  Lots of trips to Mexico!

Hunting, fishing and taking care of my mom round out the list.  I really don't know how I EVER had time to work before!  Its amazing what you can do when you are young...

See you on the water,

Public Affairs Officer for the US Forest Service.
I develop briefings, coordinate VIP visits/tours, write testimony, develop agency talking points/key messages, conduct media interviews, act as an adviser to leadership, manage web content, develop/implement information campaigns, etc

Right now my job focuses on wildfire issues throughout California, but I just accepted a job in Coeur d'Alene, ID where I will focus on 2.5 million acres and apply the same skills to all issues within that area.

In terms of networking, I can be a good resource in showing you how to get hired in the federal system, especially in fire. The catch with government work is that unless you're looking for entry level work it's tough to get your foot in the door. On the plus side though, if you have a good education (especially a master's degree), you're willing to move, and you're a motivated worker you can be promoted extremely fast to a pretty decent wage.

Been selling Aerus-Electrolux vacuums for 20 years now. With the economy and building the way it is, it is very slow. Central vacuum systems are easy to install if you have somewhere to install them. I used to sell 10-15 a month, 75% of my personal buisness, till 2 years ago. Started slowing down. Now I've sold about 10 in the last year, with some of our other products. Also rewire race cars from time to time, do small side auto work, and anything else to try and bring in the $. Keep looking for something new, but it would cost me money to take a $10-12 hour job. I'll just keep fishing, hunting, and racing I guess. (Wife has good job). Did show a profit last year racing.

Wow, cool thread.  I'm a burnt out machinist after 33 years of abuse.

Right now I am working mostly unsupervised making tooling and fixing broken stuff but I'm having more fun making freebies for myself.  Lathe, mill, grinding & CNC machining.

Describes me perfectly.  Scary.

Senior lab supervisor.  I make sure that six scientists and about 30 research associates are following protocols and guidelines.  All this for developing small molecule drugs for cancer,  liver disease, metabolism and inflammatory disease.

What a difference a month and a half makes.  Company just let go of 1/2 its employees (270 total) I have a gut feeling my department is not going to last very long.

Time to update the resume again.....dammit, just when things were going so well.

I sit in a beautiful office over-looking the main launch ramp of the Sac river here in Redding (pic attached is my view all day).  I get to watch all the drift boats hit the water about 9am, who then spend about an hour hitting one of the top riffles in the area right out my window.  As cool as that sounds, I haven't fished it myself in over 3 years.  Very sad.  My day typically involves IT troubleshooting, dealing w/ HR issues, sourcing/evaluating new projects, and working w/ project mangers to make sure they don't blow their budgets...business manager for environmental consulting firm.

For the past 25 years I have been in the fishing tackle buisness (retail) staring at the same four walls while fisherman come in and ask me where and how to catch the next big fish, than the same fisherman come in and tell me how great the bite is while I continue to stare at the same four walls.
At least when the fishing is slow I get a little time to fish untill it gets good than it's back to work staring at the same four walls and telling others where and how to catch them.
The good news is I get to see all the new gear (same stuff with new paint) before most of the rest of the world outside my same four walls :smt044   :smt005  :smt005   :smt003  :smt003   :smt009  :smt009  :smt010  :smt010

Wonderful. It was a Hispanic friend that showed us how. Catfish isn't very sensitive to over cooking (it stays moist) so it's well suited for tacos.

The trick, in my mind, is to avoid catfish during the hot summer months... June, July, August, September ... They start taking up a flavor like mud/methane. At least in ponds. I don't know about the larger lakes and rivers. If they've been held for a few days in fresh clean water it helps, but still ...

I work for the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety & Health, Mining and Tunneling Unit as an Associate Engineer.  What is all that?  I work for Cal/OSHA as an enforcement officer.  I inspect mines and tunnels under construction and regulate the use of explosives for the state.  I also tie flies and sell them from time to time, not for profit, but just to help out buddies and to keep in practice.

Might look into moonlighting as a consultant for safety and health outside of my realm of mining and tunneling, because of obvious conflict of interest issues.  The laws are the same for almost every industry, so it is a piece of cake.  In my opinion, a visit from me on a furlough Friday or on a Saturday, could save you tens of thousands of dollars in monetary fines in the event of an accident or fatality.  Even on a complaint inspection by the agency.

Well...started out wanting to be Jacques Cousteau!!
 :smt005 :smt044
Spent some years doing maintenance, painting, and laying carpet...paid for my obsession at the time: Rock Climbing (spent several years living in my truck cruising the Western States climbing and visiting breweries...highlight of the time was an epic 7 days on Yosemite's El Capitan).

Then joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in the mountains of Nicaragua doing a variety of community service projects: digging latrines, organizing youth sports leagues, building a baseball stadium etc...

Stayed on an extra year in Nicaragua managing a beach bar and restaurant in a great little town just north of the Costa Rican border...GOOD times!! Sometimes I wonder why the hell I came home!!  :smt005

Did a couple years doing community outreach with the Migrant FarmWorking population in Watsonville...went back to school on nights and weekends and got my Masters in Social Work...

Used the degree to get a job with the USDA Forest Service in Idyllwild doing Partnership work...basically communtiy collaboration about the various land management decisions being made on Forest lands...really enjoyed my time doing this!!

Got married and Ana moved down to Idyllwild with me..she HATED it and missed Watsonville... :smt011

Did the right thing and moved back up North...no forests in Watsonville, but managed to transfer over to another Fed job with the Social Security Administration...

At first I was really bummed to be out of the woods and at a desk wearing a tie...but the job is steady and secure, I have a great staff, and we help a lot of people out...in a very important way: getting them their benefits on time!! We actually pay out more $$ in benefit checks every year to the residents of Watsonville than the Ag business does in paychecks...and there's a LOT of farm work done around here!!

Anyway, if you ever have any Social Security related questions I would be happy to try and answer them...can't actually make changes or work on records not assigned to my office, but can definitely provide info and insight...

Sincerely,

Jim

hah we were probably on a similar track.I spent about 86 -90 on the same quest...minus the breweries cause that cost far too much $. Valley Spring/Fall, Toulumne Summer, Josh/Redrock winter...in the early 90s it was summers in tetons, wild iris, bugaboos...late 90s were all about Rifle

if the years were similar wouldn't suprise me one bit if we actually ran into each other a time or two

HAHA!!!

Yeah, I got the climbing bug when I started going to UCSC and all the guys in my dorms were from Mariposa...started hitting up the Valley and the Meadows, Tahoe Area, J-Tree for Thanksgiving/New Years...Road Trips to Smith in Oregon etc etc...

When I finished school in 97 I hit the road...spent a LOT of time out in Moab area on splitter cracks and towers, Squamish, Devils Tower, Red Rocks, Zion, Bishop, some nice winter months in Cochise outside of Tucson etc etc...

Good stuff...try and get on the rock now when I can but mostly it is a couple times a year taking buddies to an indoor gym or a bouldering session at Turtle Rock/Ring Mtn...

You ever want to get together and dust off the shoes and go pull down on something you let me know....see if my big 'ol butt can still get up some of the stuff I used to!!

I'd probably drag my shoes out of mothballs for a trip to turtle rock...haven't been there in years (or on rock for that matter). Wonder if i can still do the traverse?

Sounds like you were hitting yosemite after i was. I was in Tucson 94-2000, so cochise is familiar, as is Datil (enchanted tower), hueco, the Lemmon, The Dry (i found that place), Jack's, queen creek...i could go on and on...

all those areas are like old friends-- still the funnest month i've had was at squamish-- love the little smoke bluffs.

You set up the date for a turtle rock assault and i'll try to swing it (i'm off all next week so end of week might work)

I am a self-employed groundwater geologist working on soil and water contamination assessment and cleanup.  Work at refineries, bulk fuel plants, gas stations, dry-cleaners, circuit board fabs, plateshops, tanneries, landfills, general manufacturing, etc.  We also screen commerical properties for environmental problems for potential buyers.  I've worked in about a dozen states from Virginia to California.  Been in Santa Cruz since 1992.

Prior to that, a lifetime ago, was a well-site geologist in geothermal production drilling on Cobb Mtn, China Lake, Imperial Valley, Dixie Valley Nevada, and Roosevelt Hot Springs Utah.

Been married 29-years and we have 2 kids getting Phd's (one in neuroscience one in mech engineering) and two grandkids.

As a lot of you know, I recently moved back to the Bay and reactivated my Realtors license. 1st company was Re-max Castro Valley, two months later Windermere bought my Re-max brokers office = Windermere-Castro Valley. 1 month later, Gretchen Pearson (my Broker) makes one of the largest moves in Realty in the U.S. and buys Prudential California Realty. I am now affiliated w/ Prudential through Pearson Properties. A huge move for me and I could not be happier. My take on Real Estate is a little different then most. I won't sell you a home unless it improves your (and your family's) life. I hate seeing people sign up for something they can't afford, a loan that will turn into a monster or just a bad decision for any reason. My reasons are 50/50. I want to help people and I want to make a living that lets me control my life. I will not sacrifice somebodies happiness to make my living. If you think Realty is not a noble career then you have not met me.
If anyone has any questions about Real Estate feel free to contact me. No strings attached.

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster

I am a veterinary clinical pathologist/professional services veterinarian for Abaxis out of Union City.  We sell inhouse blood chemistry, CBC, coagulation, blood gas and rapid diagnostic testing to veterinarians.  I've been working there for a little over a year.  And in my previous lives, I've been a small animal veterinarian, professional student, research assistant, apprentice electrician, concrete worker, farm hand, and small town hardware store gofer.

Married, no kids, and my wife told me to quit talking about buying a kayak and just do it. . .so I did.  Looking forward to getting onto the saltwater soon, hopefully with one or more of you all looking on for both safety (for me) and humor (for you).

Just joined the site, but I am a big fan of these threads and networking in general.  I have spent the last 16 or so years in B2B Enterprise Technology Sales and Marketing in EMEA, NAR, CALA.  I now own my own consulting firm and have a few clients that keep me ticking over, my main one in Brazil (Amazon Yak fishing anyone? :) ).

I specialize in sales, marketing, sales process, process improvement, and strategic development.

I am also hiring a good telecom field engineer with sales experience or sales support experience and someone with deep telecom/comms connections for bus.dev.

Good thread.

They call me a Systems Engineer but Radio Tech is more accurate, I maintain thevarious hardware associated with the 911 System. My job is to make sure the wireless word gets out to all the EMT’s, hospitals, police, firefighters, coroner, probation, public works, park rangers, and even the dog catcher. We also install and fix a lot of misc. electronics like overhead paging systems and audio/video for the courts systems.

Studied Fisheries Biology at Oregon State for a few years with an interest in Aquaculture. Decided I didn’t want my parents paying out of state tuition so I stayed in Oregon over the summer to get my residency.  Unfortunately the economy went south and I got laid off. That led to a half dozen years in the military as an electronics technican. I built on that to become a 911 Systems Engineer.

Fish & fishing took a back seat for quite a while. It was all about Skiing and the Martial Arts  :kungfu. A couple on-mountain run-ins with a suicidal Frenchman and a clueless teen caused some meniscus damage and then when the reality of a forty something trying to keep up with a twenty something Shaolin monk led to a torn ACL, it was time for knee surgeries. What to do when you can’t be active for a while?  You fish.  That led to the NCKA.   :groupwave

Right now I have a brand new son, William Katsumi, so fishing is in the back seat again.  I am trying to get back out but the trusty Chevy Blazer has seen too many miles and needs coolant system work. I’m eyeing the baby-mobile, AKA, the minivan for conversion to a fishin’ machine.  :smt003

Back to work ... Although the economy has slowed things down we do still have occaisional openings for RF types, especially those with backgrounds in two way radio, microwave and digital trunking.

Laboratory Rats are going to be replaced by lawyers....

1. There are more attorneys than Rats...

2. The Lab Techs don't get so attached to the attorneys...

3. There are some things that even a Rat won't do.....    :smt002

OK, wow, this is not easy.  I could really use some help folks, been out of a job for a year now and had  no results on apps for jobs that, at some level, that will keep food on the table. Now we've lost our house also. I'm not asking for a recommendation, we haven't even met yet for any thing like that, just an idea as to whom you might hear is looking for an upper  managemet type. think operations and warehouse. I'm just needing some places to send some resumes too that are hiring. Thanks and I hope I haven't soured the waters around me with this post.

I'm a General Contractor, doing remodel work for the past 25 years.   Before that an industrial electrician working in a variety of manufacturing facilities.      I've never seen a worse economy than now. It's painful seeing all this talent sitting idle.     Blame it on greed...      " It's a Global Economy "  the mantra repeats, as even still more jobs are exported to China.   ( A rant developing )
My age is starting to catch up, and  hard work has taken its toll on my bones.  With the writing on the wall ( the phone not ringing )   two years ago I started building a strip planked kayak with the goal of going into production, and with it job creation.   Three months ago we finally went into production building a different type of animal.     www.santacruzkayaks.com (http://www.santacruzkayaks.com)     Ya gotta fish from one to understand.
When you see me on the water I'll be easy to recognize.  Mango kayak with the red flames...  " A flaming mango"   :smt006

I'm still at the same data storage company I was the last time I posted here. I'm in billing/AP during the day.
By night I become the creative force of Piscean Artworks,  focusing on "flat painting" in a Pacific Northwest style. I will be showing in the Doon Art  Studio Tour, an open studio tour of Bonny Doon artists on July 16 & 17. I'll have about a dozen new pieces on display, including some 10' totem boards and whatever else I can come up with in the coming months.

Below are some pieces I've done in the past, "Outer Bay" on 1" pine planks, Ravensblack's "Albion Appreciation" on heart redwood slats, and one of my early halibut pieces done on traditional cedar planks.

Nothing beats kayaking fishing for me though I am constantly trying to find a way to fly fish more efficiently/effectively because of wind effects (fishing midges requires anchoring).

Last fall when the last store I worked at closed my wife and I decided to go all in a open a little hole in the wall kayak store/ outfitters in Lodi, and over the past 6 months we have grown to a full service retail shop that specializes in Touring kayaks, Fishing kayaks and rec kayaks. We strive to offer the best personal service possible so become people "go to guys" in the paddle sports industry. We also believe in trying before you buy so we have tons of rentals, and opportunities to get out on the water and try kayaks. I'm 26 years old and living my dream!  :smt003

I am in Tracy (moved in March) so it's great I have a local (well as close as local gets in the NW Central Valley—it's 20 miles and 20 minutes to the closest cities from Tracy) shop to patronize. Whenever I can, I fish globally but shop locally. Thanks for introducing yourself.

I retired from grocery industry (32yrs) and try to kayak, camp, hike, dive, bicycle, garden, ride dirt bikes, adventure bikes and tour as often as weather permits. So I am living the dream I always wanted and love it. Sounds a little selfish but I want to get as much out of this life as I can while I'm still above the lawn. :smt001 :smt001 :smt001 :smt006
Bottom line is... pm me if you wanna go play somewhere, stay active and enjoy this life!

Live in Citrus Heights. Freelance graphic artist and art new media (motion, film editing, flash web, phone apps) for just over 10 years. Moved from Boston to Sac about 13 years ago with 2 college buddies for the Sierras. Me and my wife Kara have been together for over 10 years and we have a 11 month old son, Branson. Always been outdoors minded, met my wife on a whitewater trip on the AR, she was our guide. We both guide now mostly private.

I am putting together some of the best in the industry as in design, motion and media relations. Plan on opening up Free Motion Media with the next year. I love to fish especially from my yak. Good things....

Congratulations on the upcoming 25th anniversary. That sounds like an ideal occupation and I hope that I'm fortunate enough to be in the same situation when it's time to step away from the rat race.

As for me, I'm a sr. software developer who is always checking the weather report.  :smt003

I can call myself a professional comic now. I have taped for two networks, and am currently in the studio recording my first music album, due to be released in early 2013! I am also honored to say, that I will be the MC and host of the 2012 Montana Grain Grower's Association, and was selected to do comedy at the prestigious President's Banquet. Looking for some extra work in Santa Cruz. I know it's a long shot but you never know. After looking at the posts I noticed a lot of folks from the Santa Cruz area and figured I would ask around. I currently work full time (Mon-Fri 8-4) as a warehouse manager for a local furniture company. I am also a volunteer firefighter/EMT with a local department. Ideally I would like to find something in the late afternoon / early evenings Mon-Fri. My wife is currently attending school in the evenings so I would rather be making money than sitting around the house. If anyone knows of anything it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Unfortunately I've been off work for the past year and a half because of an injury...Now I spend my days at home with my wife and kids, and I got to say I'm a better man for it. I spent a lot of time working sixteen hour days...but no more.

Now I'm an Executive Chore Boy, kids Taxi and on call Man Whore....

I work as a Pest Control Adviser specializing in vegetable crops in the Salinas Valley. Half of the acreage I manage is organic.  We release beneficial insects and plant beneficial insectary hedgerows to help manage the pest populations in the organic crops. I also manage a small pesticide application business in Soledad.

In addition to the PCA work,  In 2009 my wife and I started testing vegetable soils for nitrate levels.  We would both collect soil samples from our growers fields and run the tests nightly on our kitchen counter.  This area of our business has taken off.  We now have 5 seasonal employees and a lab in Soledad that we use to run the soil tests.  I have recently passed an intentional exam to become a Certified Crop Adviser (professional certification in Agronomy)

I have a really cool job.  We are working to reduce nitrate loading to surface and ground water and saving vegetable growers money by reducing their fertilizer inputs.  The wife is currently in charge of our 11.5 month old twin daughters Sophia and Marguerite.  Life is good.

I work to fish.... among other things.  I'm a Designer/Project coordinator for an engineering/design firm located in Morgan Hill, CA.  We specialize in medical devices, automated systems and metrology.  There are a number of other facets to our design capabilities as well.  We manage "ideas" from concept to market release or anywhere in between using the latest in FEA analysis and development in SolidWorks.  I also develop my own items as a "hobby" using SolidWorks.  Have a product you need manufactured?  I have a few very select sources for CNC machining of parts in a varity of materials and finishes, including powdercoating & anodization.  My personal hobies extend into metalworking and woodworking.  Looking for soemthing custom but don't have the means to bring it to life?  I may be willing to barter my after-hours cservices in design/fabrication/assembly for kayak/fishing stuff!  Drop me a line!

Technical writer for a software company headquartered in Dallas, TX. I get to work from home on my own here in Vallejo. I created and manage the company Web sites and write the technical "how to" documents employing the special skill I have to confuse, confound, and frustrate those who need to know how our software updates work. Got hooked on kayak fishing when I spent a day just outside the Santa Cruz harbor with Allen Bushnell. I am grateful for the lessons he taught me and his special patience with a clumsy newbie. I have written some personal stories, some of which deal with my kayaking experience, and I published them on my own Web site: w3.nmolinaropost.com. I am so glad to have joined the madness. Thanks again, Allen.

Mechanical engineer by day at a fiberoptics company in the Bay Area. In my (non-fishing) spare time I build iOS and web apps for fun and (a very tiny amount of) profit. I have a few in the app store and am looking to add to that this year if this new Hobie Quest doesn't take up all of my time (which wouldn't be so bad either  :smt044)

I'm very new here  so hello to everyone  :smt006.  Thanks to my good buddy brdopry/Kevin for turning me on to this site.

I do secret Squirrel Stuff.  :smt005 Thats what the troops i support every day call it.

Ok, I work for a DoD contractor on the STRYKER platform. Been there for the last 10 years. Hired as a senior  heavy wheeled vehicle mech, but they found out i have computer hardware , software and heavy military automotive electrical and weapons system skills. So i ended up as a C4ISR tech. Which means i do installs and checkout on DAGR, EPLRS, BFT, FBCB2, SINGCARS, HARRIS HF, and Multiband SATCOM as well as lower tier wireless battlefield / internet and Manuever Control Systems run on UHF, VHF and HF systems. Oh almost forgot, DUKE/CREW/CHAMELEON/OSRVT/ TACTICOMP and RHINO.

My software environment combines various flavors of Windows, Unix and Linux.

Currently there are only 4 of us in the entire nation doing this on this platform. Which means i don't get to fish much. I spend around 300 days a year on the road, with very rare weekends off.

Is it any wonder people say i'm cranky? Oh, and if you know what even half of that stuff is, I'm looking to trade up in employer quality

GIS Analyst for an Environmental Consultant

so i spend most days in the office processing GPS data, making maps, utilizing Lidar for watershed analysis.  The other half of me is a wanna be aquatic biologist, so they let me out to do some backpack electrofishing now and again.  Two weeks ago i finished up a 12 hour day wearing a 40 lb backpack shocker, pulling every fish i could out of a section of creek that was being de-watered (about 3,000 in all) and all i could think was, "I can't believe i am getting paid for this :smt003".  Nothing like a day on the water!

Let me know if anyone needs any help with mapping tasks, my new favorite things is playing with KML files (the kind you can draw on google earth), and getting them on a GPS unit.

Christmas is a very hard time for my clients. Do you blame them for having bad behaviors? Thank you for loving on your family member.

If anyone wants to talk marketing, ideation, consumer research, or just wants to network, feel free to shoot me a message.

I didn't know where to put this, so I posted it here.  I have been impressed by the individuals within NCKA and someone might be able to do this.  I know of a job opening to be a caretaker for a 2000 acre ranch close to Healdsburg.  Knowledge of cattle, horses, run a bulldozer, irrigation, and anything else that goes wrong on a ranch is helpful.

You would get free housing, I believe it is 3bed, two baths- pay of 40,000, no medical,
and would  have flexible hours.  However, you would  not  be able to have each weekend off.

I have been to this ranch many times, and it is amazingly beautiful.  One of the last remaining ranches that has not been turned into vineyards.  If you are interested, pm me
and I will talk to the owners.

I did tile work from 20 to about 26 when my back and the housing market went kaput at the same time. I worked industrial plumbing for a short period which re-enforced that my back was no longer all that great.

From 2007-09 I worked for a .com company as a traveling photographer. That job was pretty awesome. My boundaries were from the Oregon border to hwy20, and from the coast to Nevada. It gave me alot of free time  (fishing time). Basically gave me paid one day fishing tips 3-4 times a week.  That job ended with them not paying me properly and the labor board letting them know that they owed me $14k.

Since then I have floated along making money on craigslist, buying and selling. I also do odd jobs through friends. At the moment I am currently working on soft bait molds of original construction. I completed a 6 inch Sanddab. I finished the blank for a 10 inch lamprey last night which is going to be cast tomorrow. I recently found out that plastic in bulk, is not cheap!

Cop

After reading everyone's responses I suppose I should elaborate. I am a career Correctional Officer. This means I am a group home leader, counselor, social worker, mental health worker, criminal investigator, gang expert, forensic photographer, communications cryptographer, electronics weapon instructor, defensive tactics instructor, crime scene technician, emergency medical first responder, hostage negotiator, immigration officer, interpreter, firefighter, clerk, expert witness, narcotics interdiction liaison, suicide prevention lead, tactical marksman, dispatcher, informant handler, intelligence agent, and surveillance technician......I think I forgot some stuff.

I worked in the timber industry until I saw the writing on the wall, and I had to decide between growing weed and doing an honest job. In Humboldt, law enforcement was one of my limited options. I go to school full time, as well as working 60 hrs a week towards my goal of becoming a political science/constitutional law teacher somewhere in a red state.

Agree.  It's fascinating to read the backgrounds of such a diverse group of people.

I'm the Web developer for the Fish Sniffer.  You'd assume that means I get to fish a lot.   Hasn't worked out that way, but its very cool working in the fishing industry as an avid recreational angler.

I work for myself as an artist with an emphasis on northern California landscapes. www.artofcharlesbeck.com (http://www.artofcharlesbeck.com) It's been forty plus years of daubing color on canvas along with doing some figurative woodcut imagery but well worth the satisfaction of doing what I wanted and eventually making a living from it.

Cool.  And a fellow cyclist.  rad.

We all come from such diverse backgrounds!  It's cool to see how kayak fishing brings us all together.

I'm a fisheries biologist with the US Forest Service.  Specifically, I work on the Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest.  Technically I'm a GS-9, but I'm currently in a detail as a GS-11 (District Fish Bio) from now until September.  I've been in this position coming on to four years now.  In addition to providing project-level planning and NEPA support, we also manage habitat for Central Valley spring-run Chinook salmon and CV winter-run steelhead in three streams on the western side of the district.  I do a lot of work with amphibians as well, including the southernmost populations of Cascades frogs and the northernmost populations of Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frogs.

Best parts of the job?  Snorkeling our anadromous streams and counting salmon is always at the top, and never gets old.  I'm also quite fond of working with our Wildland Fire folks as part of the district's Fire Militia and as a Resource Advisor on local incidents, both for the challenge and for the overtime  :smt003.  If you ever have questions about the aquatic resources of the Lassen National Forest, give me a holler!

Chris, if you get your Masters and have any interest in moving up with FS or another fed agency you should look into the PMF program.

I joined it when I get my MSW in 2005 and got picked up by FS but then transferred to SSA since the wife hated living down in the San Bernardino and wanted to move back to Watsonville...and there were no FS jobs up here.  :smt005

Anyway, here is a link with general info and feel free to PM me if you want to talk or have any questions:

http://www.pmf.gov/becomeapmf/index.aspx

Each agency runs it differently, but it is basically a 2 year program where you get a certain amount of training, details etc. and at the end they convert you to a permanent position.

When I did it the path was 9/11 and then convert to perm 12...but it is my understanding if you are already an agency employee or have higher qualifications agencies have the flexibility to do 11/12 and then hopefully convert out to perm 13....

Anyway, just a thought....I have a buddy who was a PMF and my mentor who is still with the FS so if you are interested I could put you two in contact as well.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

That's one of the better things about my job. No cubicle. Once in a while, sure. But most of the day I spend it on rooftops. Getting pounded on by 120 degree sun for 10 hours, or standing out in the middle of a rainstorm for 10 hours, or working in gusting winds for 10 hours sure gives you a new appreciation for the weather haha. There have been days I called in "sick" of my dang job, but 99% of the time I enjoy it. Always meet new people, go to new places, and tackle new challenges every day.

I could do without working in San Francisco though. That place is a nightmare in so many ways! Okay guys let's load up 1000 feet of ductwork from across the street to the 8th floor. By the way the elevator is broken. ARG. Haha. Definitely lose 20 pounds a week on those jobs. Then gain 20 a week when it gets easier, ha.

I spent the last 30 years working on or around container ships and oil tankers, traveling the world. In the last 8 years was chief engineer on the newest US built container ship going to China and more recently senior port engineer for a shipping company in Oakland.

But as of this Friday May 30, I am joining the ranks of the retired, only water vessel I will be in is human powered!

I get to wake up next Monday and go fishing if I want, or as long as my wife let's me :smt003

I am a 2D/3D Game Artist for PC, Mobile Tablets/Phones, and Facebook games - been doing this since 09. I'm an traditional artist at heart but I also enjoy designing stuff - kayaks, lures, crab snares...

(Update)
Currently working for a company called Heartflow as a Case Analyst. I basically take CT scans of a patient's heart and turn it into a 3D model for a specialized computer to work out fluid flow computations based off the model.

The posts are all fluff with the clear intention to pad post count to be able to post the kayak for sale, but he clearly seems interested in our sport given he joined 3 months ago. I'd give the benefit of the doubt here.

Kayaker-  this thread is about what you do for a living. Unless you sell friend's kayaks for a living, please tell us what you do. Then start an intro thread and tell us about your paddling and fishing. Including fish porn is always appreciated. Welcome to NCKA!

But now I just chill out and do biotech lab work. I traded working with grease and engine with infinite long hours for a night shift in a lab. It's chill for a change and I get to go fishing and see the family . But all I do now is dream up projects and ways to improve rigging my kayak . Gonna plan on designing my own carbon fiber kayak . Hopefully soon. In the mean time I'm wrapping fishing rods.

I've been at the same job for 25 years hospital Dietary, it took me 12 years on that job just to become full time big tall ladder. But I worked other jobs while working part time started off at a auto body shop at 16 washing and sanding cars. Then a buddy of mine who runs a tree service ask me if I wanted to come work with him learn to climb trees did that for 14 years. But the hospital job by far was the best make 25.14 an hour to basically do kitchen work I get 5 weeks vacation a year 12 paid holidays but I absolutely hate going to work in the morning a kitchen is 95 degrees continuously   I think I will retire at the age of 60 with 38 years in the Union starting next year in March I will be in local 1020 the BART Union but it's still the same SEIU. Hope this all works out and my pension in there when the time comes.

Former surfboard builder. Decided to change careers in late 40's graduated w/ BS in 2011 and have been working in fisheries related work since. Spent a few summers doing salmonid habitat monitoring - topo surveying up in Eastern Washington Columbia basin. Winters here in SC conducting coho/steelhead spawning surveys. Am now leading the Santa Cruz - San Mateo spawning survey program for PSMFC contracted to CDFW. Cool work, I get to run around in streams for 4 + months in the winter then spend summer w/ data analysis, write up and prep for next season.

Glad to see this thread. I know many of these posts are about what you do and not much about help. But I want to reach just because there are many successful members here with great careers willing to lend a hand.

So Here I go.
Well, a few jobs for me;
Liqour store clerk
Bus boy on the weekends
Construction

And now im currently a night time meat supervisor for whole foods market. Been there for 10 years as I attended CSUEB  and went through LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE FIRE PROGRAM/ACADEMY/EMT. I then became a volunteer fire fighter for River Delta Fire where I had to stop 2 months ago due to work and family.

I have many certs related to fire.

I appreciate any and all the help I can get.

Thanks,
Chuwy

Hello all,
New to ncka and thought I'd share a little about myself. I've worked at many different places from subway for 5.15 hr in Arizona (first job and it sucked) to working in a lab with chemists packaging and quality control. I have always worked on cars and have always been a part time mechanic but now that is my full time job. I am self employed and do fairly well for myself and I am trying to save up enough to own my own shop. I work on all cars but love the old schools. I own a 74 nova 4door sleeper that is almost done and about to get started on my 68 firebird coup 400. A lot of hobbies but it seems that cars and now this kayak fishing are the most expensive. Me get as well live life and enjoy it.

My wife told me the other day on the drive back from Shelter that I should tell people what I do.

Internet Troll

She also said that since I'm fairly well versed in personal finance, that I should offer to help out those in our community that feel they may not be where they want to be financially. So....

I also work for the Securities and Exchange Commission as an examiner of Investment Advisers, with background in broker-dealer regulation.  So if you ever have problems with a financial adviser or securities broker giving you the runaround, feel free to reach out to me.

I'm also sort of a personal finance jack of all trades and have a strong understanding of mortgages, HELOCs, consumer credit/credit repair, car leases, new car purchases, solar financing, some minor tax prep, passive investing, travel hacking, credit card points/deals, personal fishing shopping, home and life insurance....generally a consumer advocate for everything.

I'm always willing to help out a community member who wants advice. Feel free to reach out anytime.  I'm extraordinarily impartial and a very blunt instrument.

13 years experience in high school special education, serving those with mild/moderate disabling conditions.
-First 5 years in Galt working for a district with minimal resources and a high percentage of ELL and migrant worker populations.

-last 8 years at Acalanes Union High School district. Opposite end of the spectrum, very affluent. I learned a lot about litigation, compliance, and navigating conflict between parents and school districts.

I’m posting in case anyone here needs a free resource for Special Education matters. Education advocates can be expensive, lawyers even more so. As long as the individual I would be providing advise for is not registered in my district, I would be happy to help answer any questions or give advise about how to proceed and protect your interests. That is up to the point at which it’s time to hire professionals to go to bat for you.

I’m always interested in helping young people prevail in their educational pursuits. PM me if you think I could be useful to you should you find the need.
