Does anyone know of someone missing out of Albion, California? We just got a call at Pacific Outfitters here in Ukiah from the Albion Fire Department saying they just had a kayak wash up, full of gear, but no fisherman. It has Pacific Outfitters stickers on it.
We're trying to get a hold of them to find out the model and color, but I'm not sure of it yet. I'll post a description as soon as I get one.
-
No idea who it could. I hope it is something stupid like it washed out into the river or something.
We should all have Coast Guard stickers with contact info in it. I do.
Hope all turns out well.
-
Damn! I hope someone just forgot to tie their yak down...
Prayers for sure!!!
-
Praying that on land, someones cussin a lost kayak.
-
Thanks for the message. Hopefully we can find the owner. And hoping for the best.
But I would definitely ask them to look inside the hatches for a name/number. Or maybe even the serial number because you may be able to track them down that way too.
-
Hoping that it's not what it looks like...
-
What kind of kayak is it? Ken Jan was there over the weekend an diving. Hope they find the owner safe. Thanks for sharing it here.
-
We still haven't been able to get more details on the kayak description. I'll post them as soon as I know more.
-
Maybe have the fire dept post the info and photos here
Hope the coast guard is out looking
-
Maybe this should be in the public reports section too
-
Yikes! Lots of sketchy ocean news this weekend.. Body washed ashore on Stinson today... This...and on Saturday we were fishing OC when a lone kayak angler was trying to find his way back to Stillwater in very thick fog and no gps. very sketchy and good reminder to be safe and prepared when out on the water.
-
Fog, reminder everyone should have a compass and know how to use it.
-
Maybe this should be in the public reports section too
Good idea, I just did. Thanks.
-
Not the kind of thing you want to hear, sending positive thoughts that all is well.
-
Just read a report of a body washing up on shore at Stinson. Reported at 2:45 PM today according to the Petaluma Patch. I know it's a big difference but hope its not related.

Talked with a guy in Saturday at Albion that was doing a 12 hour paddle. He was an NCKA member. The swell was bad by 12-1 when I came in. His car was still at the launch...

That's the guy! Wow, I hope it's not him. I was the last person to see him as he took off!
Looks like he was online, must not have been him! Good!
-
Here
Whew! That looks promising. I didn't see that, just checked stats.
-
Well fingers crossed this story has a happy ending where a kayak and its owner are reunited

I met Ron earlier this year in Mendo. To the best of my recollection he was on a yellow hobie outback (not 100% sure I remember correctly). Anybody got an update on the model/color of the boat that washed-up?
I sent Ron a PM - anybody have an email or phone number for him?
-
Our store tried getting back in contact with the fire department all afternoon but no answer. I'll be on it first thing in the morning and I'll post as soon as I know anything.
-

Hate to say it, but if he shared a computer it could have been someone else at home. Hoping that i'm not right...

According to this post Ron has an Outback: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=43693.msg481642#msg481642 from Adventure Sports

Crossing my fingers that this turns out better than it appears. Hoping for a happy ending here.
-
Still hoping for the best outcome.

Any update...

Info if anybody wants to call them http://www.albionfiredept.com/
I hit the link and thought, "that's an odd area code"... It's Albion, Indiana! :smt005
I'll try to get some info.

OK, so here's what I know so far. Albion Fire got back to us this morning and said the boat is a blue or teal Ocean Kayak. Didn't give us the model however. They will hopefully be calling us back with a serial number soon so we can determine who we sold the boat to. Just hoping still that this was just a boat that got away and not something worse.
I'll keep you all posted.
-
Did it have fishing gear or diving gear? Or did they say?
-

According to what I got yesterday, there was fishing gear aboard.
-
Not looking good guys, if it was one of our own, they would have piped up, or someone would have. That color is old. Any local reports of missing persons?

Finally got some pictures of the kayak. It's an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT. Still don't have a serial number yet but this narrows it down a bit.
-
I don't think I see fishing gear. Looks like a diver...

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking the same thing.
-
Watching this thread with great anxiety.
I hope it all turns out OK.
-
I don't think I see fishing gear. Looks like a diver...
Yeah, I'm kinda thinking the same thing.
A diver would have had SOMETHING clipped to the kayak, and it looks pretty bare. Paddles are usually clipped to the kayak, kelp clip, flags, extra gear, etc. I don't see anything, which hopefully means that it got loose at the campground or somewhere upriver.
-
I met a scuba diver at Fort Ross a few weeks ago. That looks like his kayak. Do not know his name, or where he was from. Not too many OK in that color running around. Hope this has a happy ending.
It looks like a shorter model. The one the guy I met was using was shorter than the P13 Cody was paddling. NOt sure of the model, fish/dive, scupper pro, etc. Keep posting updates when they are avail please :smt006

Yeah, hope so.
-
Looks like the yak is full of water
If so it would be tough paddling and keeping it upright especially if conditions were wrong, yak would tend to sway and go over
I did the stretch from Stinson to Muir w a lot of water in the Tarpon, very steep swell. Was exhausting and would have probably abandoned ship and swam but I had pb Hog Heaven shadow me all the way down to Muir
Hope this doesn't turn out to be the case
-
Well, just found out that there is no serial number on it.
-
That is an oldschool Scrambler, before the XT model. I owned 2 of those in the exact same color.
I bet it floated down the river.
OR the owner was simply diving and the kayak got loose. Now he's swimming around looking for his yak.
But the 2nd pic is confusing because the guy appears to be drilling holes in the kayak?

He letting the water out.

I was wondering that myself. I guess it was too heavy to carry and they didn't realize there is a drain plug? Would kinda suck to get your kayak back only to find a big ol hole in the rear from a drill. Lets just hope that's the worst of it.
-
that kayak must have flipped over or had a leak in it though to get that much water in it. scramblers don't have enough hatches to leak. that scrambler doesn't look like it has hatches at all.
the straps on front and in back seem to be tank straps - they might need to be looking for a scuba guy.
-
Lets hope that this was just a lost kayak at sea with no one attached. Who knows how long it as been drifting.
-
Any local reports of missing persons?
Sort of...
...What are the odds this has been drifting around for over a week without being noticed....?
-
Any Updates?
-
Anyone know if kayaks in general will grow barnacles or other stuff on them if in the water for a long time? Maybe it is from Japan.

I thought the same thing - Japan, Hawaii, Pacific NW. But you're right it would have more stuff on it and look more weathered, and would probably have faded - my Scrambler XT was orange and has faded really badly. It also sprang a leak in the seal between the two moulded halves. Made it unstable and v.heavy - would explain a lot if the kayak took on water and became unstable.
No kayakers reported missing though?

yes they would.
I found a water bottle at the channel islands lat year from the USS Nimitz that was covered in small gooseneck barnacles.
But yeah, if this was from Japan it would be really faded. This looks like a boat from the coast here.
really hoping this tale has a good outcome.

No reply.... Guessing if you guys are considering far away a week is pretty plausible though.
-
I kinda doubt it would have been adrift that long with no one reporting seeing it. There is enough boat traffic through that area that it would have been spotted. That's my guess anyway.
-
Plus it had stickers from Pacific Outfitters on it
-
Too lazy to look, but wasn't there a thread awhile back from a member beaching and leaving his kayak due to rough water, then scaling the headlands to get to safety?

It's been my observation that blue kayaks can easily just about disappear from sight out on the ocean in anything but FAC conditions
-
Hopefully my blue Hobie doesn't disappear, especially with me in it!
-
The Marin County coroner's office has identified a deceased man who washed ashore at Stinson Beach on Friday as 50-year-old Ralf Hilty of San Francisco.
-
Hola everyone, this is Ron or RAP. Yep, I was there at Albion on a long day out. Yep, I met Bird a month or two back on another endurance trip. Met Joebronco at Albion on Saturday. Made it back about 5:00pm.
THANKS FOR THE CONCERN! What a great group...a tight group. Started a new job at Chevron/Richmond and been busy and just saw this post. I also am hoping for the best for the washed up kayak.
-
That's a relief. ^
-
x2
-
and was Ralf dressed in kayaking type clothing or any other link to the found yak??
-

No, Ralf was a hiker who commonly hiked the GGNRA area.
-
Any closure on this one?
-
On a side note, I found out WHY they were drilling holes in the kayak. My son's took on water this weekend, and pulling that thing up onto dry land was a CHORE! The scrambler isn't easy to drain, and they may not know how to drain one anyway, so a few relief holes is a fast easy way especially if they have the tools handy. I was glad that my son had the experience of taking on water in an area where it was relatively safe. He got to experience the instability of the yak full of water-I have not had that experience yet. Now, he will know what to expect in the event that it happens again.
I am hoping this is just a lost kayak, and we dont have a lost soul. I have not heard a word lately either on this one.
-
Seems like it would be worth posting fliers in the neighborhood near the river. "FOUND KAYAK!"
If someone's just missing a kayak, they might not necessarily be checking with the fire department...
