How do you all set up your drag say for bottom fishing with maybe 25lb spectra? I mostly Bass fish so I don't use line that heavy I just set my drag by feel.I am trying to get a set-up so I can start Ocean fishing.
Thanks for any help.

Jack,

I think the consensus is that drag should be set at about 1/3 of the breaking strength of your line.  So for 25# spectra (or mono) 8 pounds or so should do ya.  You can use a fish scale to set it accurately at first, then when you get a feel for the resistance involved, you can just give it a  pull to set it by feel like you do for your lighter lines.

but if you are using a bass reel just set it at big bass strength. rockfish are big bass sized.

some reels can't take real hard drag pressure without damange to brass gears.

the spectra is as much for feel and for being skinny so it keeps the lure vertical as it is for strength.

you can always thumb the reel a bit too.

I caught all my fish last year on a bass reel and rod, including the big halibut.

Thanks everyone. I am building a rod I think will work, I will use 1 of my bass reels. I will use Power Pro because of line size. The reel is a Daiwa PS2-5B. I think it will hold up. It has ripped some big bass out of the tullies in the Delta.
