Title: New Stealth 14 rod storage options?
Post by: WingShooter on November 28, 2012, 04:15:09 PM
Looking at the new 2012 Stealth 14 and I see there are two storage areas on the sides of the live well/center hatch. My question is has anyone moded/tried to use these storage areas for rods with reels. It looks like you might be able to get a med size baitcasters/rod in there. It's hard to tell from all the picts.

I do a few gnarly beach launch and land trips each year and yard sales happen. I've been looking for rod pod/ rod storage boats for a few months now. I really like this boat... ahhh lot. Mike

I sold my Stealth 14 about a month ago.  The glove box inserts are removeable.  I had the livewell plumbed so the left side was not accessable for rod storage.  The right side would be a possability IF your rod is flexable enough and your reel was small enough to fit thru the opening.  Id say the glove box opening/door is only about 12-15" long but feeds into the entire hull with almost nothing to interfere as you go forward.  Just don't loose the rod end inside the hull.  I also did a full rudder rig job if you ever want to go that route.  I'd skip a rudder though, looking back on mine.

you really don't need to. The malibu's have a big enough front hatch to easily slide rods in. with the size of the stealth 14 it is so stable you can easily slide up, straddling the kayak and access the front hatch on the water. I did it many times and never had problem.

Good point J but I wanted to get away from that if I could. What I was thinking was to sew in a rod sleeve into the side pouches. This would make storing and securing the rods much easier from your seat. Do you have one of these at your shop?

we don't carry malibu, but I paddled malibu's for a few years. I had a stealth 14 too. I would look into something like this. I think you would have a hard time putting reels through the side opening. its not all that big as I recall. if you took the reels off you could fit rods in there easily. Then put the reels in the live well when you land.

I bought jbakers Stealth.  Sold it to someone in Lodi about a month ago and got a brand new Hobie AI.

It's a horizontal rod holder made by Hobie, and dealer can get it for you. It's universal so it will work on any kayak.

Does the new Stealth have the rear hatch, like this one? (http://www.malibukayaks.com/pix/circle3_stealth_14.jpg)  I got my X-Factor without that hatch installed, but there is the spot for it still if I wanted to cut it out and mount the hatch.  Seems like the better option for rod storage OTW, if your not using a crate that it.

The 14 does have the rear hatch.
