Hey everyone,
I'm getting ready to jump into the trailer market for a few reasons but mostly for convenience. While I don't mind car-topping my new Outback (a gift from possibly the best GF on the planet), I do prefer to transport it upside down on padded crossbars as opposed to in cradles. When sliding it up and across the bars solo, I need to essentially empty it and strip it bare to prevent protruding mounts and dangling clips from scratching or hanging up on the rails and roof of the car. I'm currently running the YakAttack Mighty Mounts for my rod holders and FF base, and even those sprocket-shaped bases with the attachments removed tend to be problematic for car-topping if I'm not careful.

As I contemplate trailering regularly, it seems like one big advantage is storing and transporting the kayak in a more ready, and thereby heavier state, which would save a TON of time before and after I leave the house AND before and after I launch and land respectively.

My question is how much are you comfortable leaving on your kayaks during transport. I can't imagine leaving my FF back there, but it seems like lashed tools, even rod holders should travel fine.

PFD bungee'd down?

Seat locked and buckled in place?

Paddle and gaff clipped and bungee'd?

Mirage Drive locked and leashed in place?

My normal spot is about 60 minutes from home - soon to be more like 30 min. but there's highway time either way.

Just curious what others have found.

I've got an AI, and I leave the rod holders and seat in place. I don't see much savings to leaving the mirage drive installed, and I'd be worried that it might get stolen. As for the paddle, pfd, etc., I'd think it would be more trouble to secure them than to just put them in place after you arrive.

Mine sit on the gunwales so there completely unrigged except the ram balls for the FF and rod holders. All the gear is in boxes on the trailer.

I slide my outback in the bed of my long bed f250. Not quite the same as a trailer but close. I leave everything on the kayak. The only thing I've ever had issue with was the fish finder,  the ball in the gear track loosened up and it slid out never to be seen again because I was too lazy to hook up the power/ducer cable the night before. It saves tons of time transporting upright with all the gear attached.
