This is an absolutely awesome event, in a beautiful location, with unmatched angling. The event is a fundraiser for the Greenwood Community Center. While it may seem like there are a lot of "restrictions", its all to maintain the love. This is my favorite event of the year, and you will have a blast. Good cause, great people and scenery, outstanding angling.
Registration
Registration for this event is limited. The town of Elk doesn't want this to be a huge event, so we have to live with these rules. The good news is the "small" size does keep it cozy. Even at the limited size this will likely be the biggest kayak fishing tourney in Norcal. The limitations are as follows:
50 "overnighting" non-mendocino county residents. The 50 only includes registered kayak anglers, not family members in your group. Reg for this group is $45, which includes "overnighting" (formerly known as camping) at the Greenwood Community Center (GCC) for Fri. and Sat. nights.
Unlimited reg to "non-overnighting" Mendocino county residents. Reg. for this group is $30 for the tourney and events on Sat. Does not include any overnighting.
Between out-of-county and local participants expect around 60 anglers
About the GCC and the event
We will have all of the same facilities as last year. The commercial kitchen has been improved, in part, from our donation from last year.
We will have outside showers again and nice porta potties, as well as indoor potties and showers for the ladies. PLEASE use them, no wizzing outside!
We will do movies and popcorn again on Friday night.
Potluck on Saturday, with a keg of Great White courtesy of GWKC. This is the best part of the event. Be prepared to bring a big dish to share. The quality of chow produced by the NCKA members is outstanding!!! Be hungry!!!
The potluck is open to anyone, including non-anglers and the community.
To prevent damage to the GCC septic system, we cannot park on the lawn this year. Be prepared to park in a designated parking area and schlep your overnighting gear to the "lawn" area.
Tourney
Tourney will be on Sat. Launch at 0600 or as soon as it is deemed safe. Weigh-in at 1330 at the GCC. Single heavy fish format. Last years winnng ling was 26#s...so was second place...3rd was almost 20#. Oh my!!!
First prize is a Cobra Marauder from Cobra Kayaks or a pair of his and hers Mini-X's from Malibu Kayaks, which ever the winner chooses. Second place gets second choice... :smt003. Lots of other great prizes as well. Sponsors include GWKC, Cobra Kayaks, Malibu Kayaks, Surf to Summit, Cannon Paddles, and West Marine. Plenty of loot to be had!
About the Resources
This is a low-pressure fishing area, and as a result the fishing here can be outstanding. We ALL want it to stay this way. Please harvest selectively. A warden lives directly adjacent to the GCC. He doesn't like this event. Expect ALL DFG regs. to be strictly enforced. Since most will be on site for multiple days be mindful of both daily and possesion limits. With the quality of fish to be had, you WILL leave with PLENTY of fish.
Shirts
Surf to Summit recently aquired a new digital t-sirt machine, so we will have shirts this year. The vermllion rockfish at the top of the page will be on the back in full color. If you want one, please tell us your size and how many you would like when you register. Shirts will be $15.
Raffle
Erik Kunz will be doing a raffle to benefit Coastside again this year. Knowing Erik you can only imagine what first prize will be! Lots of other great prizes too.
About the town
Elk is a small town on Hwy 1 about 9 miles south of Hwy 128. It is a living postcard...beautiful. Expect it to take approximately 1.5 hours from the town of Cloverdale. Aproximately 3 hours from the Golden Gate. Traffic in Sonoma County can be hell!
There are several outstanding cafe's within walking distance and a small general store next door. Lots of nice boutiques etc. too.
The whole town will be watching us this year. While most were fine with the event from last year, there were also a few detractors. Please help us keep this event alive by being who we are.
About the launch
We will be overnighting on a bluff. There is a long, moderately steep fire road to the beach. You will need some sort of cart. It is WAY too long to carry a yak. The launch is a surf launch that varies with the swell. Under 6 feet its generally not too tough if your an experienced surf launcher. Over six feet is for the experienced only. If its too rough or too long of a walk, you are allowed to launch anywhere in the vicinity and enter your fish.

can we sign up now I really dont want to miss out on this one.
-
If we come with 2 kayakers out of 3 in the group how much will registration be?
-
Sweet, my vermilion photo is going to be a t-shirt. It looks great and I can't wait to get one. Hey, can I get a guaranteed spot in exchange for the use of my photo on the t-shirt? How about as returning champ to defend my title?
Sounds like there are going to be about 500+ disappointed Nor-Cal kayak anglers (and probably plenty of So-Cal ones as well) who won't be able to register for this event.

That would be $90 Tote, every angler has to pay $45 entry fee.

Coastside Raffle Information
Again, I'll be coordinating a raffle at the Elk Tournament to benefit the Coastside Fishing Club. You all know how greatly the CFC has benefitted all Californian anglers this year (i.e. we actually have a salmon season for starters), and they continue to fight the good fight on our behalf. Consider this your opportunity to show your support for Coastside by bringing plenty-o-cash to the Elk derby to buy a big pile of raffle tickets.
Tickets will be sold for $5 each.
Prizes:
I am building a custom rod for the raffle that I would normally sell for upwards of $300. It'll be a 7', 15-25# Composite rod with solid titanium framed guides, acid wrapped, with oversized foregrip designed to make the rod float if dropped overboard. More details on that once the rod is finished.
The rest of the prize list will be posted at a later date prior to the derby. If it's anything like last year, the prize list will be very substantial.
Soliciting for Prizes
If you are able to solicit local businesses or otherwise provide prizes for the raffle, please send me a PM or email to let me know what the prizes are so that I can keep a list of prizes and contributors. If businesses request a letter / reciept indicating the purpose of the raffle, I'll provide that upon request.
Last year our raffle raised a generous $600 for Coastside... I think we can easily surpass that number this year.
The raffle will be open to all who attend the Derby / Potluck dinner (entrants, guests, and visitors alike). You must be present to win, or make arrangements for someone to accept your prize(s) on your behalf if you have to leave early.

EK,
I am the Vice President of the Mendocino County Deputy Sheriff's Association and will be attending the Elk event. On behalf of the Mendocino County Deputy Sheriff's Association, I will be donating two $50.00 gift certificates from the Outdoor Pro Shops. I will bring them with me on the 11th of August.
Thanks for all your hard work, as I too have been tasked with organizing prizes for our Christmas dinner. I know things can get hectic.
Dan
-
Hey Dan,
How about a few "get out of jail pass".......or even better "get out of a speeding ticket pass" since most of us go past the speed limit just to get to Lake Mendo intime for the striper boils :smt003
-
How about a dozen doughnuts for the local uptight warden?
MolBasser
-
I'm going to try and hook-up with Kevin (The Warden) and see what the deal is. Maybe he could come and teach a short class Friday night? I know th
e guy and he really is good guy. I'm serious.
And I only have one doughnut, it's the one just above my belt line and right below my sunken chest.
CHEERS!
-
He seems like a good guy to me too. He has checked my catch several times and always been courteous etc. Kevin's beef with this event is that we are fishing in "his" spot. He'll tell you otherwise, but from what I can tell it's a NIMBY issue. There is no real biological or ecological reason to be opposed to a one day event like this. Our take will be equivalent to one party boat for one day...in other words, insiginificant.
-
Thanks!
-
Wow. I can think of a good His/Her winning combo for the matching boats........... :smt003
Thank you for the incredible invent, Sean.
-
Hey, anyone interested in having some informal teams for the Elk tournament.
The winning team would have the best average of each individuals largest fish with zeros included for those who fail to bring in a fish.
I'm thinking this could be set up a couple different ways...
1.) pick your own crew of 4-5 people and give yourself a silly name
2.) simply represent the county you live in. Mendocino vs Sonoma vs ,etc...
3.) and my personal favorite... North vs South with the Golden Gate being the rough dividing line.
Here's a map of what I'm thinking about..
-
OH NO YOU D'INT just suggest a county battle!!!!
Santa Clara all the way baby!
-
I'm thinking we should get a list together of all the enterants and their county of residence...
We could easily do a North vs South as well as a county by county battle that way.
I imagine the Mendocino folks would want a chance to defend their territory.
My prediction for the tournament is as follows...
North over South with the following as the top three counties...
1.) Sonoma County
2.) Mendocino County
3.) San Mateo County
-
Don't even dis SC county man, we will take you down! Just to give you a flava of the power SC brings to the table...
1. Stu
2. Freddie
3. Martin
4. Bill
5. Dave
6. Scott Thornley
and probably some more I am missing.
Bring it on!!!!!!
-
Brian,
Bring your wallet and be prepared to hand over that title. :smt003
Stuart
-
San Mateo... Santa Cruz... Santa Clara... whatever.... actually, I have no idea who lives in which county down there... I just picked one to make you "south of the gate" folks feel better even though I know it will be Humbodlt or Marin county up in the top three along with Sonoma and Mendocino.
-
The "South of the Gate" gang will surely take the honors this year :smt002 The Bodega Bay Clan is going down :kungfu
I suggest you guys keep an eye on your kayaks :smt077
-
This should be fun... let the smack talk begin!!!
-
....I already installed a motion detecting alarm on my yak...just in case I get "bananad" again :smt013 Chris / Cpyak, prepare for retaliation "from the Mendo banana in the dry box incident" :smt074
...and Bill, keep an eye on your cooler, you may just find a rotting carcass in yours :smt093 .....retaliation for leaving a rotten banana in my cooler on our last Linda Mar trip together :smt076
Let the War Games begin :smt066
-
those of us in the bay area counties are the truly SKILLED anglers. anyone can catch a fish up north, but you gotta be GOOD to catch one in the bay!oh yeah!! :smt003
-
Sweet, Mooch is already causing discord among his fellow "below the gate" anglers.
-
Besides the friendly rivalry, I think we should consider a few non-fishing activities at Elk this year.
My personal contribution this year will be "Gyotaku" (a.k.a. Japanese Fish Printing) Saturday afternoon.
Here's an example of a vermilion I did last year.
It's a great way to record your catch and once you wash off the non-toxic paint, you can still eat it.
I'll bring some supplies (non-toxic paints, brushes, rice paper, etc...) and once I get back from fishing the tournament people can start making prints. My friends at the lab who are coming all know how to do this so we should have plenty of people to help out. Even little kids can (with a bit of help) make nice prints. Add a nice frame and you have a great gift for all your fish loving friends.
Also, I'll look into getting a few tubes of fabric paint so people can try making t-shirts. So remember to bring a couple plain t-shirts (any solid color will do).
Brian
-
Awesome Brian I have been looking forward to that!
So North vs south or counties????
-
That looks so cool!!!! Is there any particular kind of paint we could bring for T-shirts to help out???
-
Bill,
I say we figure out counties and do both... dividing the counties into North and South (note slight color difference in my map).
For example, I'm in Sonoma County which is also "North of the Gate" so my biggest fish goes towards the average of both.
Another example, when Mooch comes back empty handed he'll add a big goose egg to the average of San Mateo county as well as "South of the Gate".
I don't know if anyone is coming up from SoCal, but we could make that a third regional group if there are enough of them.
As for counties with low representation, we could consider grouping a few of the counties together if they only have one or two representives each as long as the counties are from the same general area. For example, I think there are a few people on this board from various counties in the foothills of the sierras and maybe they could team up together.
We can figure it better once we know which counties everyone is from.
-
Thanks for the offer Tote,
Just bring a few cotton t-shirts that you'll want printed, I'll take care of picking up the paints and Sean has informed me that this will be an official activity and that I'll be reimbursed for supplies.
Oh, with the t-shirts.. light colored shirts are great with dark paints, but also consider dark shirts with light colored paint. And if you're bringing new shirts be sure to wash them first... having a new t-shirt shrink will crack the paints.
I don't remember the name of the paints, but basically they're heat activated. You make the print, let the paint dry and then use an iron to set it. I'll have to double check on whether those paints are non-toxic or not so maybe we'll end up only printing a few small fish like that.
Brian
-
How of the central valley crew made it in the tourny?
-Brian G
-
Yolo county representin'! We got 2 (Sean and Ashley).
Or I can be in on the CVC (central valley crew, for those of you not in the know).
-Sean
-
I don't know, maybe we need a roll call. (names, nickname, county)...
I'll start for the Bodega Crew...
Brian (bsteves) Sonoma
Jim (InSeine) Sonoma
Naoaki (Naoaki_uminchu) Sonoma
Levi (Steele_leader) Sonoma or San Diego (he's in grad school down there now)
As for the central valley crew.. with my current division of counties Yolo and Sacramento would be "north of the gate" counties. So I don't know whether you'd have a central valley north and a central valley south, or maybe we make the central valley it's own, but I'm not sure where to draw the line. The nice thing about North vs South is that it's farily simple.
-
i would really like to have a lingcod print shirt. with some teeth!
-
Careful I might claim Levi as south of the gate!!! :smt003
bill(bill) - Santa Clara
-
Tote - El Dorado County
CHUB - EDC
Becky - EDC
BSTEVES~ Would a heat gun set it as well??
-
Chris,
I'm not sure lingcod teeth will show up, but I suppose you could always paint them in. The problem with big fish like lingcod is that they don't fit on the shirt, but I suppose you could do a print of just the head. Maybe from above rather than the traditional side view.
Bill,
I'm going to set up a google spreadsheet with the names, counties and NOTG or SOTG, I'll send you the link when I'm done and post a list here as well.
Tote,
I'm note sure about a heat gun, it might be too hot. Generally, you let the paint dry and cover it with a towel and run an iron over it. I'm going bring an iron anyway to make sure we don't have wrinkles in the shirts before they're printed.
-Brian

Dan - Mendo County - Mahi Mahi

I'll be proud to team up with the rest of the winning Sonoma County crew! :smt002

In SoCal we did team tournaments several times. 3 or 4 man teams and combined the catches and did a MBF style tourney with money going to the teams.
I am a member of the Floating Banana Brotherhood.
MolBasser
-
Al (alfredo)
Eric
Sacramento county. Throw us in with the CVC group.
-
Randy = Monterey County
Seabreeze = Monterey County
SOTB rocks!
-
Okay, I've divided the state up a few different ways....
North vs South
North vs Central vs South
Regionally (North of the Gate "NOTG", South of the Gate "SOTG", Southern California "SoCal", Central Valley "CV", Mountian "MT")
Mountain is a bit of a catch all for all the mountainous counties that I didn't know where else to put.
Let me know which you like better and whether anyone has any strong objections the way I classified particular counties. It's all based by county, so we can slice and dice many ways in the end.
Brian
-
I will defer the reading of the map to my girlfriend who ISN'T color blind!
-
Looks good Brian. I am pretty sure we don't have any SoCalies though, unless Levi wants to be a team of one...
What are we playing for though??
-
Mostly just bragging rights. I hadn't thought of an actual prize. Maybe we need a trophy or maybe a nice bottle of tequila or something the winning team can share in celebration.
-
A trophy might be fun.
-
Traveling trophy... something big and obnoxious.
-
How about a travlling trophy/plaque that has a big ol' lingcod with elk antlers (think jackolope) paddling a kayak on it?
-
Bringing home the jackaling! Too sweet!!!
-
Jackaling sounds great, anyone know someone that can make one?
-
Any do-it-yourself taxidermists out there?
If my wife could stand the smell, I would do a skull prep on a ling (remove all the bones and reassemble)and add some antlers (if I could get ahold of some). I'm guessing she's not going to approve and it looks like my schedule probably won't include lingcod fishing until Elk.
Alternatively, we need someone who can draw/paint/woodburn/sculpt/dacoupage/embroider/etc....
-
Paging Mr. Skyboy, paging Mr. Skyboy....
-
Stick that ling head on an ant hill. They will do the dirty work for ya.
-
Just bring a few cotton t-shirts that you'll want printed, I'll take care of picking up the paints and Sean has informed me that this will be an official activity and that I'll be reimbursed for supplies.
Oh, with the t-shirts.. light colored shirts are great with dark paints, but also consider dark shirts with light colored paint. And if you're bringing new shirts be sure to wash them first... having a new t-shirt shrink will crack the paints.
What about just some printing on the shirts like "Big Ling Team"
-
What about just some printing on the shirts like "Big Ling Team"
That works great for the NOTG team but what about the SOTG team ....... "Little Ling Team" :bootyshake:
-
This is my two cents on the bragging rights/trophy thought. I will use my coaching background to make this proposal.
If there is to be a trophy then maybe it could be be the Elk trophy only. We can bring it to elk every year and have it engraved with the winning county and score. Place it on potluck table and the winner get to eat first too.
Each member of the winning team gets an NCKA T-shirt that has Elk derby champ on it and the year. That way whenever we venture North we can rub it in with our shirts. This may seem a bit too formal but this is how we do it in sports. 1 trophy, everyone gets t-shirts to show off. year, date, event.
Jason
-
Thanks for singing me up for 25 free t-shirts selli :smt003
In other news Allen Bushnell has offered to interview the winner on the "Let's Go Fishing" radio show - http://theletsgofishingradioshow.com/ So not only do you get a kayak (or 2) but you will become world famous and have hordes of fishing groupies chasing after you!
Allen was also kind enough to donate a free guided kayak fishing trip to the raffle. Thanks again Allen!
-
OK, so maybe the T-shirt thing was a bad Idea. How about this, the losing team has to buy the T-shirts for the winning team. J/K :smt005
-
We received a sample shirt today...came out great!
-
I would love to register....I may not have read enough....where exactly do I have to go to pre-register for this event?
Hopefully I won't have a kayak that sinks this time. :smt005
I found the link :smt005

If anyone wants to know if the Mini X will catch fish, HERE (http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49826) is one in action.

Is the weather forecast better than what I am finding????? :smt009
-
Looks like it is going to be rather windy according to this:
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/PZ/455.html
-
We should have had the tourney this weekend, saterday was perfect,...20-30 with 6-8ft, does not sound goog
-
Man those are not good conditions to fish in. Just ask chuck about our crabbing adventure. Or anyone who has fished OP, San Pablo or Berkley pier. :smt011
-
Sweet, having honed my fishing off the Sonoma coast, those are my prefered kayak fishing conditions. I just can't get a decent drift in anything less than 25 kts and a short period 8 ft wind wave gives my jig a nice ling enticing action. Now all I need is really thick fog and maybe a red tide or hypoxia event.
-
Ah man, the marine weather forecast is starting to get better (but they're at least talking about fog now). Hopefully it will still scare off those of you who get "mal de mer". :)
Sat
N wind 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 4 to 6 ft. NW swell 5 ft. Patchy fog.
-
Okay. It was not just me. I have NEVER before (okay, I admit I am spoiled) seen conditions where wind waves exceeded swell.
-
I'm optimistic that there will be just enough of a weather window for me to run out to my secret spot with my secret lure and secret bait with my secret rod loaded with secret fishing line and very quitely (secretly if you will) land a winning Ling before the water becomes completely unmanageable.
:smt002
-
As long as the wind holds out the 2 days prior to the tourney I will be happy. That would allow me to plant my secret chum bag in a secret spot where everyone paddles PAST on their way to their secret spot in order to lure lingzilla away from any previously said secret spots.
-
This is gonna be a blast.
-
The forecast contiues to improve...hopefully it will be fine!
-

I too have a secret lure....called the "Hula Dancer"....however, I do not have a secret spot so I will have to mooch a secret spot from Erik
