I dropped by about 9am with only 3 guys sitting on the launch...first time I can truly say...

LooKEd LiKE a FReAkY-DeaKY PlaSTiK NaVy out there...was CRAZY CRAZY.

My daughter loved seeing all the yaks-- "jelly beans"..."no honey, kayaks, like daddy's"  "akyak...kaya...kayak..kayak, kayak, kayak..."  This was followed shortly by "shiner bait"

Hope y'all had a great time out there...

Those of us who had the misfortune of missing the event want details.

Always good to see NCKA folks, their families and potential members.  It was cold and windy but the company and the excellent grub made up for any minor discomforts.  Great to meet and greet NCKA folks that we only knew from their posts and to shake their hands and share their company.

The park and facilities were EXCELLENT.  The rangers (all of them) were so accommodating it was like we were guests in their house and we were the favorite cousins.  The scenery, fishing grounds, picnic area, parking lot and launch were awesome.

Adam, thanks for putting this together and spreading the madness...

Fishy details: only 3 butts caught and one C&R'd striper BUT the butts  were BIG.  ChuckE decided to give the rest of us a chance and showed up late but at the end of the day he had the big un'.   Here's a pic of Scott's (GB2) catch and can you believe it...that's the smallest one.

Adam -

Thanks to you and your family for organizing. Had a great time.  :smt003 Finally got the hali monkey off my back. I guess the karma thing is true and BTW, ChuckE is the Yoda of bay hali fishing  :smt006, Details to follow but at 32" is my personal best kayak butt...

Slight correction: there're 4 keeper Hali  :smt007  I'll post report & picture later after dinner.  Here are a couple of Hali pictures:  ChuckE's Hali was a big fat 38" and Craig's was 33.5".

It was a nice day to relax. Overcast skies until mid afternoon. The breeze didn't kick in until late afternoon., but the water still looked flat. As Adam said, that's why they call the place Paradise. The The OTW pics were taken from the picnic site.

When we stopped to get shiners at Keiths this morning at 6am The flag was blowing from the SSW. Straight out it was flying. Jay and Theresa showed up and we all said"wow it sure is windy". Keith would only sell us a total of 3 dozen. When I arrived I was mezmerized at all the kayaks and people. This was going to be way cool. Overcast and windy turned sunny and bright with all the great attitudes that were emanating from everyone. Joy and excitement in the air. No mad rush and all just putting the stuff together and down to the launch. I got underway and used  a new set-up for drifting.1/0 owner light wire circle on a 36" leader of 30#floro below a slider wit a 3oz ball sinker. I drifed in and out of the pilings to the north of the launch where I hooked and landed a fish 2 weeks ago. No luck. The wind had statred coming down the hill and blowing out towards the bridge. Starting at tye pilings and drifting NE. When I got to the 16ft mark I had a takedown that just loaded the rod up and I was on.33.5 halibut in the net and then the ball peen went to work. I think thats just about the biggest fish that will fit in that net.EWB was kind enough to come over for an assist until I heard someone(who was it?) say "net your own GD fish". Right then I thought, right on. What the hell was I thinking. I was a little more than scared of losing the fish. Only my second kayak halibut. It was a beautiful sweep with the net and grabbing the net after dropping my rod on the deck, this bastard wasnt going anywhere.

I had a great time today and met again tons of beautiful folks. Thanks Adam and Barbara for putting us on to a wonderful day at one of the most beautiful spots in Marin.

Chuck, dude, I was so checking out the painting that Ben made and already thinking thats pretty cool. Then you roll up with that fish and WOW. You recieved a plaque last week describing you as the HALIBUT KING. That is so right. Congrats on two weekends in a row of showning me who is KING. Sorry Duane. :smt003

WTG Dustin , who bagged two halibut . Scott who got first blood on the water for halibut. Great to meet you today also.

Clamming at 6am tommorrow! What in hell was I thinking? I better get my ass to bed. Goodnight and the story of memorial day weekend of 09 continues tommorrow. Craig.

P.S. When we were staging our kayaks this am a huge raven flew right over my head and I swear it looked down just for a sec. I knew then it was going to be a special day.

With all the photos, it's like I was there.
Solid showing of fish, apparently Adam picked a great spot to hold this event (no surprise there, the gut is a hunter of fish).
It's great to look through all these pics & recognize so many folks that are looking so happy. It's a wonderful alternative to what we see on the average media news.
Looks like NCKA delivers another good 'un.

WTG!

Big Thanks to Adam and Barbara for setting this event up.  Great time - people, location, food, and fishing.  Enjoyed meeting and hanging with folks.  Great pictures guys!  Top-shelf all around!

It was cool to see the kayak fleet on the water.  Thanks for the shiners Craig! Congrats to all who caught fish - Chad, Craig, Dustin, Scott, Chuck - sorry if I missed someone.  Classic - ChuckE rolls in around 11ish and bags the big fish!

Take care - John

Howard - thanks for the pics, DVD's and egg rolls.  :smt003

Here is my hali story. In 2008, I was completely shut out for hali's including a hali hunt at Berkeley with Chuck and Dave where they caught 2 hali's each and I caught nothing.  :smt013 The killer was my trip to MBK with flyaker where I was teaching him saltwater yak fishing and he bags a 36" hali.  :smt044 Over the winter I did some research on hali fishing and decided to try some new tactics. I also always take a look at Chuck's rigging which is always very innovative and I borrowed some ideas. Yesterday I was drifting live 3" smelt which Sandman caught the night before. Thanks Gary!  :smt006 I was using a sliding rig with a 3 oz torpedo sinker and light wire single hook in the nose with a butt hooked treble stinger. I was concerned about the treble hook slowing the bait movement down but Hippo Lau recommended it in his Fishsniffer article and I watched the bait swim after rigging and it looked OK although a little sluggish. Never fished at Paradise before so Adam gave me and Sandman the the layout and I followed Jay south to the point. Set up a series of drifts across the hole and on my 6th drift had a massive take down. After a short fight, I get the fish up to the surface and see that it is well over 22" and it is barely hooked on the stinger hook. I break out the Kunz gaff and I am thinking, "just don't blow the gaff shot". I aim for the head and the point bounces off the fish. Then the hali goes ballistic and dives straight down and my line goes limp.  :smt013 My heart was broken and I was sure I had lost the fish. I start reeling line and find the fish is still on.  :smt003 I get the gaff out and aim farther back and get a good shot and bring him to the boat where I boga gripped the lower lip and get him on the game clip. I decided to leave him in the water and cut the gills and waited for him to die before bringing onboard. When I finally brought him onboard, I flipped him upside down to try and figure out why I missed the first gaff shot. The same thing happen with Flyaker's hali last summer. On close inspection there is super hard gill plate which is much larger and harder than other fish like yellowtail. It was good to finally catch one and now I can return the ocean and hunt rockies for the rest of the summer.

I showed up at the bait shop and thought that I might end up spending the day at the park reading a book due to the wind.  But when Jay and I arrived and saw everyone unloading boats and setting up in the lot, I decided that I would go out and try again for a hali.  I enjoyed my time on the water but there were no fish for me.  Congrats to all who did catch one, they were all beautiful!  The food and the company at the potluck was wonderful.  A great way to catch up with those I have not seen for awhile.  I hope to see you all again really soon.

My only picture to post, my view of halibut fishing.  The Pink Flamingo rides again, looking for a 'but!

Awesome report Scott. Thanks again Adam for setting this up and thank you
Barbara for all your hard work setting up the table and much more.  Yesterday
was another awesome get together. I just love meeting more new people I have
not met before. It is always a treat. Just don't ask me to repeat their names. :smt044 I am so bad at that. Howard, thanks for taking some wonderful
pictures. Sonny, great job also on taking some pictures on the water.
Congrats to Chuck on catching the biggest fish. I honestly thought that Craig was
going home with that AMAZING,BEAUTIFUL,AWESOME art work that Ben
(guitarzan) had made. Dude, you're truly gifted man. Congrats to all who caught
some fish. Dustin(Rock Hopper), Scott(GB2),Chad,Craig(ravensblack)and of course
our champ, Chuck(ChuckE).
I am so glad that my family was able to come with me. My giving back was I sat
this one out. I was on the sideline. My wife Kim was having a ball pedalling my
Outback. She was out there pretty far just enjoying herself and so was my son
Brandon. On our way home, my wife and kids said that they all had so much fun.
She mentioned that she met a lot of great folks and had great conversation with
the Mrs.
Oh, I almost forgot about the great FOOD. Man, talk about some amazing dishes
that everybody shared. I ruined my hard dieting that day. Who could blame me, I
wanted to try everything there on the table. From the BBQ to the salads and the
desserts, WOW!!!
Thank you NCKA! THAT WAS FUN ALL OVER AGAIN.

Uncle Ad thanks for the (I don't know, he just jumped on the hook?) Picture. This was the best BBQ EVER!!! I was able to catch up with some old friends, soak up some game from the legends, and bust my Hali Cherry. I'm 100% a catch and release guy, but after so many deliciouse Butts came un buttoned on me, I had to take a sacrificial Flatty for the family. The highlight was catching the fish, yet the day would not have been as fun or satisfying in any way with out the NCKA fam :smt005. It was a trip to roll up and see so many yakers dipping into the water. I ended up hooking that hali after a lil snack, I'm still convinced that it was Bens crab chowder that did it. As soon as i headed back out I let nature do the rest, really i got lazy and stopped trying to paddle. Then I hear zzzzzzz. Well the rest isn't important. Ended up netting and filleting my first hali!!! special thanks to Adam aka OUA, Juan aka the magic man, and to RickL for guiding my rod through my first hali experience :smt003

My Son and I had a great time, its always nice to see and be apart of a group of people that make you fill so welcome. Fishing was not so good for me and I think my son caught the smallest halibut for the day 18” at lest he did not get skunked. Congrats to all that caught halibut that day and thank you Adam for putting it together and for those of us that did not catch any thing WE WILL GET THEM NEXT TIME :smt003.

I thought I'd share my dream last night. I was at a tackle shop asking the guy
behind the counter if they carried the line splitter rig. He didn't know what I was
talking about so I looked at every isle of the store. I was trying to remember in
my head what that thing looked like again. As I was heading out of the tackle
shop, I saw the splitter right next to the exit door. I bought 10 of them thinking
I would share some to my NCKA bros. See what you've started Chuck? Even in
my sleep BRO.  I think I may need to see a SHRINK.  The kayak fishing disease is
spreading too fast. :smt005

Thanks to Adam and Barbara for organizing this event, I had a great time!
Where did you guys find the fish friendly girlfriends and wifes? Some of whom were actually out there on the water, wow, how cool.
There were some of the happiest children I have ever seen, you couldn't  help but return their infectuous smiles. Happy children come from happy parents, right on and good job.
My only catch of the day was a pier fisherman, oops, even after reading a post warning of this. Der. Targeting halibut has humbled me again but I did get some great tips from the pros, thanks for sharing.
I cut out a little early after eating my share of the awesome grub, I didn't sleep a wink the night before anticipating this event.

I only took a few pics, and they were of Shannon, (of "Tom n Shannon who fish OP" fame) catching the first fish of the day, a plump n fiesty 7lb striper:

Man, what a get together this was.  All kinds of cool people everywhere.  Great food and good fishing.  I hitched a ride with the halslayer and showed up around 1000am.  We both figured with the high tide being around 100 pm we'd hit it 2 hours before.   It payed off for Chuck big time.

A big WTG to Adam.  You are da man.  THanks for putting this hookup together and also for buying the spot.  I know you wouldn't accept any donations from anybody but some way or another I know we'll just keep the cycle of hookin brothas up goin and it will be all good.

Nice to meet your nephew and congrats on getting your first halibut from the yak CHad.  Dude, get a rack for that pickup of yours.  I'd hate to see it get scratched up.  Thats a sweet ride.  To all my other bro's, good seein all of you and the new people I've met, I look forward to fishing with all you guys again.  JTF

Adam, family, and others...Thanks a million!!!! It was a great event. I was totally blown away by the # of people OTW. The location and facilities were great. The rangers were totally stoked. I was hitting the restroom as Chuck was landing. I told the ranger that there's another pig was coming in and he actually ran to get his camera to take a pic. He was so stoked to be able to post the pics on their bulletin board.

Thanks to sailfish who gave me a small reel. I am gonna use for a home made sabiki rod...Will post pics later.

Thanks for everything all!
Shannon and I had a blast, great company and awesome food!  We will defiantly be back for another round.
highlight of my day was Shannon catching that striper (7 pounds on the Boga). Not only first fish of the day but her first striper of the year and first fish on the yak.
it was awesome to see her literally kiss the fish on the forehead and let it go.  gotta be worth karma points there.

Great meeting folks and we had a blast!

Tom

Hi EWB,

Thanks for the bonker & home made jig.  That reel will be perfect for your Sabiki rod.  You just miss the great clam digging hookup this morning.  I'll post the report and pictures later this afternoon.

Another excellent NCKA hook-up. Thanks FisHunter & Barbara for puttin' it together.  :smt001

Great to see people I've met and meet some new ones, along with some of their kids & families.

Hojo, awesome pics as always and thanks for disc with all the previous photos.

Props to everyone else for capturing & posting some great shots as well.

Food was abundant & off the hook (some literally) as usual. So much food, grill space was at a premium!

Nice going (again) ChuckE on the hefty hali & congrats to Craig & all who hooked up. Gotta give special props for firsts - nice goin' ChevDaze on your 1st hali! KoolAid may be my new ritual drink on hali hunts.  :smt003

Thanks again all for an awesome NCKA Saturday! Looking forward, and inspired, for the next one.  :smt004

Damn Craig that was quick! :smt044  I literally sent them him not 15min ago! :smt044  Oh well, I was glad that I close enough to get the shots.  If I wasn't hooking anything at least others were!  :smt010
ChuckE's monster just after getting it on clip.

I'm not sure who this is but he hooked up just after Chuck! and as I was there when Chuck hooked up I got a few of him as well.

I wasn't thinking to take a picture of the enormous amount of bait that my FF was showing, my FF has never, never in it's entire time on any of my hulls showed as much fish in fresh water as it did that Saturday on the bay!
When Al & arrived, the parking lot was already full of kayaks!  Lots of color all down the line of parked vehicles.
I found Adam and got medicated! (Thanks Adam) I never got or felt the least bit queasy or sea sick, was able to tie tackle, the whole nine yards.  I realise it was a bay, and the huge swells probably weren't present, but the ferry wakes were sporty at times.  They didn't bother me at all.  Next step is the open ocean.
Despite everyone around me landing fish, I had a real good time on the water.  I soaked up all the on water information Adam, Chuck, Craig and all had to offer.   When I finally called it quits, I released the shiner Craig gave me and made my way back to the launch.
After avoiding a heart attack dragging my barge on those skids known as Hobie wheels, up the hill, I made my way to the food.  6hours on the water I was a little hungry!  All I'm gonna say about the food is YUM.  OK one more thing.  There was allot of it! :smt007
I think, if I ever go to paradise park again with my barge (AKA OB) I'll have different wheels for it!
Great event, One more thanks to Adam for doing it! :smt006

It was great seeing everyone again and meeting new members like Bigwavedave, Surfhunter and his wife Shannon, and many others.  It was also great to see guys like GB2, Ravensblack, Chad, and others hook nice fish.

I thought JTF and I blew it by getting there late.  The lower parking lot was already full, and from the lot we could see the flotilla OTW.  I radioed the the group and heard that there were already some nice fish landed, so we rushed to launch and just hoped for some luck near the top of the tide.  It was near 11am by the time we launched.

I was drifting a live smelt near Dustin "Rockhopper" when I felt a tiny tap then another small tap.  I dipped the rod and gave up some slack, and just about then, I saw my line start straightening out.  I reeled in slowly (no setting the hook) until I felt the weight of the fish.  It was heavier than normal, so I thought it might be a batray, but when I felt the tell-tale head shakes I knew it was a hali.  As the fish got closer, I could really feel its weight.  I readied my game clip, club, and landing net.  That's when I got my first look at the big flatty and realized it was a "gaffer" so I put net back.  I reeled down on the fish and slowly lifted the rod to get the fish to glide up to the gaff.  As quick as I could, I buried the gaff, lifted the fish, and slipped the game clip up the gills and closed it.  That's when I went savage with my "JabberWhacker" -- my new homemade steel whacker with a sharpened tip for jabbing as needed.  It quickly did the trick to put the lights out on the 38" hog - my biggest bay halibut to date.

I want to thank Adam and Barbara for hooking-up a great gathering, and everyone for the fantastic potluck spread.  I also want to thank Ben "Guitarzan" for the awesome oil painting.  I swear I've seen that exact landscape image before in real life....or was it just in my dreams.

Thanks to Adam for setting this GT up, and BIG thanks to Craig for the shiners.

My buddy Cal and I started off fishing the cove / point South of the pier. I was marking tons of baitfish and some really big fish in there but nothing wanted to bite. After that we both made the trip North to the pilings. Poked around near the pilings for a bit then did the whole west to east wind drift between 10 feet and 23 feet. On my way back from my first drift I picked up my first hali in 16ft of water. It wasn't too big so I called Adam over for a Hawg Trough assist. I measured it out to 24" so I bludgeoned it and continued to paddle back to the pilings. Did a few more drifts with some of the fellas and on one drift Chuck said his bait was getting nervous. Sure enough it got hammered and Chuck was on! I paddled over and started poppin' off OTW shots of the battle. I didn't get any pictures of the fish because right when I was taking the last pic my pole went bendo! So with my non-waterproof camera danglin' from my mouth I went to work. This 'but actually towed me around a bit so I thought it was gonna be a gangster but, surprisingly, it was just a scrappy 26"er. Still tastes good, so I kept that one also. Did a few more drifts for nada then brought up the rear, with JTF and I being the last two to land.

Had a great time and once again pigged out at a spectacular NCKA feast.

The last pic is how the bigger hali ended up. Pan fried with rice pilaf and steamed vegetables. So good.
