I don’t know anything about them, but was intrigued by the motor that goes on/into the Hobie guardian plate. For the older outback they have one that is rudder mounted.

I'm doing a DIY version on my hobie lynx that sits in the guardian plate. Probably should have just bought the TPP. Every time I DIY, the time spent seems to make it a worse deal than just spending the $.  :smt003

If I go ahead and install an electric troll motor on my Outback what are the fees required from DMV?  I have heard that it can be as much as 180 bucks.  I know that it is required to license a powered yak in California but how many of you actually do?  Thanks for any responses.

I just registered my Pelican kayak and the fee was $135.

That’s almost as much as I pay to register my world famous orange CRV…

I registered my Outback last year and it was $96.  I remember someone on this forum last year said theirs was $60.  Seems like there are different interpretations of what the fees are by the DMV office you visit.

I think the fee is going up as I recalled my AI registration fee back then was around $60.

Probably depends on what the purchase price was, and how long since initial purchase. Think of the vehicle license fee portion of the car registration - based on value of the vehicle.

When you do register it and you bought it new make sure DMV knows you paid sales tax already otherwise it might be charged again at reg.

I believe that you tell them the purchase price of the vehicle (yak) and the license fee is based on the price of the yak times the local sales tax.  If you paid $1500 for the yak the license fee would be 8% (my local sales tax rate)of $1500 or $120 plus some DMV fees.  I think that is what I paid in the past for buying a motorcycle private party.  I was curious what others might have paid.......DMV is not always clear on their charges.
