A buddy and I will be in Monterey this next week, starting 4/19 to 4/22, We will stay at a campground KOA Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay north of Moss Beach. If conditions look good and you want to go that weekend, let us know. I am new to freediving, experienced scuba diver, my buddy is from Hawaii and is experienced at freediving and spearfishing. Where do you dive in Santa Cruz area, interested in learning spots to go. I will let my Buddy/Steve know you may go this weekend, he may be interested, I am working this weekend, Good luck, Ron.
If you are staying towards moss landing I would recommend diving in Monterey. The water clarity is much better and is usually better protected from swell. Sadly I won't be around this tie  during your weekend trip, but i would recommend trying still water cove or carmel beach. Best of luck out there.

Well if anyone want to try and get out spearing. I will be trying to go out this weekend in Santa Cruz. Send me a dm if you guys are interested.

If you can find a scupper classic or any scupper pro kayak they will be well worth your money.
Search Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. You can usually find one for 300 or under. The perception is also a great kayak if you can get a twin hatch.

Look into boat anodes. They are sacrificial metals (like zinc and aluminum).

I'm sure it  will just take a bunch of time in the water to figure it out. I could barely even find the halibut in that picture.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / spearing halibut
« on: February 03, 2023, 11:59:53 PM »
Hi all!
I know we are still a few month away from when halibut start returning to the shallow water, but i seem to be getting an  itch for trying my hand at halibut again. Iv tried last year unsuccessfully in Santa cruz, but i am not sure if was looking in the right areas. I did go between the sand channels in the eel grass and reef. Though I have also heard they tend to frequent the surf breaks where food gets turned up. If anyone has some advice on how to find these tricky fish i will take all i can get.

I need to learn the way! Iv tried out of Santa Cruz( unsuccessfully). Though its pretty difficult to find them when you practically need to be eye to eye with how bad viz normally is.

I'd be happy to show a new guy The ropes. Better to dive with someone than nobody at all, and  As long as you don't mind 5ft viz in  sc you should be ok.

The upside of Spearfishing is that it’s year round. Down side is we only get so many dive  days when the weather is good.

Hi everyone. Just want to introduce myself. My name is Jacob and I'm looking for some possible buddies to go kayak spearfishing in Santa Cruz or Monterey. I just got a scupper classic and have been wanting to test It out.  If anyone is available let me know.

It definitely can be done successfully, here is a photo from 11/22/2022
well you got a picture of me with my best lingcod there sand dab😂 that was on last month. The water was 15-20ft viz that day.
Haha nice lingcod!  My sister sent me this photo, she was saying that everyone was really interested in seeing the fish
Thanks, I felt like a rockstar with how many people wanted to stop and take pictures. That lingcod ended up at 21.5lbs and 39.5”. It was a great day, but I doubt  I’ll be finding another one soon like that.

This pic was taken about 0.5 mi from where you guys are talking about swimming. Have a closer look behind the rod and say hello to my little friend!
Thankfully most of the time those guys are Out a little father than where we are. Though we always run the risk of bumping into them.. I will say that the fear of sharks in sc tends to keep a lot of people out of the water. which isn’t a bad thing since is keep the pressure off some spots.

I dive out of Santa Cruz all the time. Honestly I find it more productive than Monterey if you’re willing to deal with terrible viz. It also helps that there is much less pressure on the fish up here.
