Probably not strong enough for many hoochies per extension but will try with beads and hoochies to create a school of squid with a trailing bait line for this hailbut idea thanks to Ruben... :smt006

Why not just run it as is with swimbaits? Then you could run a short extension and some bait. You would probably need some heavier heads to get to the bottom. I mean guys catch them on single swimbaits, why not on 5 swimbaits. It sounds like good idea. Post up how it works for you!

Yes, will run a trailing bait line, something about squid appearance seems enticing and hoocihies are squid, aren't they?  I think next to anchovy, squid are a preferred Hali food.  Swimbaits are certainly on the drawing board.

The guy who owns Redwood Spreader Bars, Matt, is a very cool dude and I'm sure appreciates the additional exposure for his products. And I want to point out that the Humboldt Dredge is killer on salmon too...

Good point, Pat. I don't really know the dude but he seems cool. I actually bought a second one in a different color for salmon. I'm sure the pearl white would work but I think the UV is just better enough that it justified buying two. I can't wait for the weather to get better up here so I can go scout around a bit.

Fun project, I just started and completed yesterday.

A few observations from the build; I only allowed myself to spend $23 dollars on materials, a "yum-brella" rig, and a few squid imitations. As you can see in the picture, I have a fraction of the squid on my version than the original dredge. To match the 15 squid bodies on the original dredge, I (at Dicks sporting goods) would have needed to purchase 8 packages (2 squid per package) at $4.99 each. That's $40 on squid imitations. I got the umbrella rig for $12. The dredge is on sale for $50 I believe from the company Ruben's came from. In short, if I didn't love a good project, I would probably just purchase online. Not sure how mine will work in comparison, but it was fun!  obviously cheaper if you have some parts lying around at home. i also used a large high end barrel swivel to separate the squid, some 25 lb test line, and an FBR with two snelled octopus hooks.

Looks like you can get the same squid used in the Humboldt dredge for $10 per 25-pack, but you have to pay shipping and they have a minimum order, so you would probably be paying around $28 for enough squid to make 3 rigs. https://www.b2squid.com/detail.php?product=34
