CA State Record Perch

Big Jim just commented on his state record MFE today on Facebook which made me curious to look at some state records. Upon research, the state record for spearfishing (free dive) Rubber Lipped Seaperch is 4 lbs 10oz. (https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/fishing/records) Well... LOOK AT THIS PICTURE (4lb 8oz)and compare belly sizes with the one I'm holding right in the water. It was super pregnant. Since perch are live breeders (no eggs laid - just live fish) I thought I'd be a nice guy and pushed all the babies out of her before I brained her (they were ready and about 30 babies swam away). I thought I was saving fish for later... had no thought that this could be a state record perch...  I AM KICKING MYSELF SO BAD RIGHT NOW! Upon further research (https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Fish-ID/Sportfish/Perches#rubberlip) the largest recorded rubber lip was 19.6" and mine is 20.125"...

Is there somewhere I can submit these photos for some semblance of official recognition for a freaking huge surfperch?

Hopefully the babies survived at least they didn't end up like my last preggo perch.

Still have the babies in the freezer waiting for cryogenic developments or just crab season

Yeah ccup got the state record rubberlip perch and Olive back in 2012 in our first year of doing DOTY and both those records still stand...

The monkey one has gone back and forth between fuzz and I since 2011...

FWIW, the DFW "max length" of species have been proven wrong several times by DOTY divers...like with this 17.5 inch kelpy of Charlie's:

Age and Growth

Kelp rockfish have been aged to a maximum of 25 years, but few reach the age of 20 years. Males and females grow at about the same rate or females only slightly faster. Both sexes reach similar maximum lengths. Based on a calculated age-length relationship, an 8-inch TL kelp rockfish is approximately 4-5 years old, a 10-inch fish is approximately 10 years old, and 12-inch fish are rare. The largest recorded length for this species is 16.8 inches.

I'm def not "A-Team"...

Fuzz is a whole different story...#legend...

But that is only when he actually gets out and dives...which seems to happen only a few times a year recently.
