Hello Spearos-

I知 just beginning my spearfishing obsession.  I知 starting with an FII L1 class with Daniel Gillen from Red Triangle.

I am looking for recommendations on both a kayak and a gun.  If possible, it would be great to get a tandem that I could also use solo for spearing trips.  I知 looking at a Tarpon 135T or Malibu 2XL Angler.

On the gun side, I知 looking at something that would be good for Point Conception up to Fort Bragg.  I do like the idea of a wood gun, but am open to suggestions.  If it makes sense, I am not opposed to two guns.

Thanks and I hope to get out there with some of you.

That's a decent range of water conditions.  For hole hunting rockfish, cabbies, and lings, a lot of people recommend something shorter, like a custom wood mid-handle, or a Pathos Laser Open Pro 60.  I have a Rob Allen 800, and it is a little on the long side for hole hunting (still works).  You could get something a bit longer if you get into shooting schoolie fish like WSB etc.

Also, not a bad idea to spring for a nice, bright dive light.

Other people on this site are far more experienced/knowledgable on all this stuff, though.

You will find quite a few threads on this forum if you search for keywords like "speargun recommendations" or related.
For a beginner spearo I would say a polespewar would be a safe way to start, giving you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with your gear, and learn fish habits.
If you're set in getting a speargun instead of a polespear, I believe the overall consensus for the "north coast"would be a 75cm euro rubber powered or equivalent. Better viz from Monterey south, may warrant a 90 cm gun to compliment your arsenal. Pneumatics could be another option as they deliver more punch for their size, however they are noisy, which should not be a problem in spooking fish in our neck of...the ocean.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information.  I will search the forums for speargun recommendations and do some research on polespears.

If you can find one, the Scupper Pro kayak is highly regarded by spearos. (I have 2). As for spear guns, lots of good ones out there Riffe, Rob Allen and Pathos seem to be favorites. Definitely get a mid-handle 75-90cm for most of your hole hunting which is most of what you will be doing around here. Then get a 110cm for a back up and to have on your yak incase you find clear water and schools of fish/sheephead/halibut at longer range shots.

I have a Scupper Pro I'm hoping to sell. It's a single, but it's a great kayak for diving. This is the dual hatch version. It's in great condition, some typical scratches, but no leaks. It has Scotty mounts as well as a flag mount on the rear.

If you're interested I can post pics and we can discuss more details.

For the speargun - 70 or 82cm Pathos Laser Open
For Kayak - Scupper Pro or Stealth Fusion 480
