Heard alot of talk of the lower Feather fishing well for spring steelies so I decided to make my one and only trip there this spring. With the outflow of the thermolito basically shutoff the "highflow" area is very fishable. I knew the peeps would be in the low flow so I fished the high flow below the outflow. Found 2 pods of fish and did very well. They were bright, strong and very acrobatic.

Suckers are starting to spawn and caught a bunch of those fair hooked and snagged. 4-5lb sucker is fun on a 5wt., even caught a couple big pike minnows or whatever they are.  It's a perfect storm of bigger food; sucker spawn, alevins and caddis although I did catch one on a mayfly nymph. I "swymphed" unless the run called for the bobber.

Wont to much longer, 70 bridge and taking out in the high flow would be great for a kayak..someday when I have more time.

Awesome  :smt004.  I love fishing the sucker spawn--there's a place up here where you can tear up some awesome rainbows during the sucker spawn by nymphing sucker spawn imitations under an indicator.  Oftentimes it's the only thing the fish will bite.

And I agree, sucker on the fly is fun!  They'd grab the sucker spawn flies nearly as often as the trout.

I gotta get out with the "Brain Egg" up there, probably kills around the inlets when the suckers are moving up.

It's a great time to hit the valley rivers with a 5wt., have fished the lower sac, stani and feather over the past few weeks and it's getting better with more bigger fish being caught...eggs,legs and caddis...i'm not messing with any small mayflies or midges right now unless it's a dry. Landing ratio on 16 or smaller is noticeable to me...

very nice fish Ted, which is no real surprise considering how well you usually fish! :smt002

Congrats on a successful trip. :smt006
