The ride was like this for over 30 hours there and over 30 hours back.
Keep your eyes on the horizon. That's what our dining tables and bunk beds were doing.
Thank God for Scopace.

Basically the trip went like this:

Day one We left the docks at around 0900 and then got bait, we set sail around 1200. We ate and ate and then went to sleep.

Day two We woke up and ate some more.  Then they put out trolling gear.  By noon or so we were into a pretty steady pick of small yft on the troll with a few nice dorado in the mix.  We kept eating. By about 2 we were in fairly steady small tuna action.  By 4 pm we had about 75 yft on the boat and we got to Benitos and looked around but it was way too windy to do anything so we decided to move to Cedros as it is big enough to have a lee side. We set anchor for the night and we ate some more.

Day three We got to Cedros and fished near the harbor.  It was windy but manageable. Folks got into a steady pick of nice grade YT.  Fish ranged from 20 pounds to nearly 40.  Justin speared 4 in a short time in 15 feet of water.  Chef's brother smoked a pig RIGHT next to the beach while casting for halis in the beach break.  I had the worst day kayak fishing in recent memory.  By the end of the day there were about 35 NICE YT on board.

Day four we decided to try something new.  Half stayed on the Islander and went a few hundred yards offshore.  Others yak fished.  Yaks got monsters, the boat got quantity. More and more eating.  We were all now addicted to "snack".

Day five We did the same.  50/50 in the am. Yaks got blown out in the wind and the boat stacked em.  In the Pm all went on the boat and it was INSANE WFO carnage.  More eating and snack.  We pulled the plug at about 330 and began traveling home.  About 600 pm we came across the biggest tuna/dolphin boil EVER.  More tuna on board but these were nicer fish.  Then the seas relly got ugly and very few ate and retained dinner.

Day 6 We continued slogging north for ever.  We arrived at 1000 AM and began assessing the carnage. HOLY #$%^ we killed a lot of fish!!!  Long drive home.

Today everyone was ass deep in fish and gear cleaning.  In summary...ridiculous fishing and fun.

Leaving Cedros the ocean exploded with life. Dolphins by the thousands as far as the eye could see going crazy on the surface. Every bit of white water you see in the vid are dolphins on the surface. Mix in feeding seals and tuna and it was an incredible sight to behold.

Shimmy, thanks for letting me help you clean some pelagics and for the load of fillets, will be greatly appreciated by the family.  Its been almost five years since I've tuna fished (after growing up there five years seems like twenty) and now (after the filleting outing) I'm really itching to go.

What an action packed week! It was a dream come true, the fulfillment of a 5-year old wish, an epic adventure. And it was all that despite the rough ride there and back and gale force winds that limited what we could do on the 'yaks.

Milestones. So many PB kayak yellowtail I couldn't possibly count them. First fish too, like Seabreeze's YT sleigh ride. The one that tugged at my heartstrings the most was a bit of old business, unfinished business. It was laid to rest by Mike, brother of our dear departed Chef Stefano. KZ, you'll be glad to know the Livestrong rod fulfilled its mission. Rest in peace Chef.

Over on the lee the numbers weren’t anything special, but the size certainly was. Many La Jolla regulars will never hook into such tanks, and certainly not in 15 feet of water.

That fast-action bite on the boat was outrageous, talk about your full-on bendo bender. And not at all unusual for Cedros. That frenzy was just out of kayak reach given the gale force winds. Granted decent weather, we would have experienced true kayak chaos, ‘yaks zipping hither and yon. Next year it’s on!

There was some strange bad juju going on for the chartermasters. That first evening I banged a fat 7-lb boiler rock calico in front of the Kayak Fishing Game On camera, but blanked from then on as far as notable yak fish. I'll let SBD tell his own story. Didn't matter; I was stoked to see others pull on fish. Besides, I got mine from the big boat.

That's right, we figured out some new wrinkles on this pioneering trip. It's possible to split the difference, get it on on the plastic and then score numbers on the mothership. Dual threat!

A public thank-you to each and every one who made this trip possible. We couldn’t have had a better group, a point the crew made time and again. You rolled with the punches (quite literally) and never let a bit of a blow get you down. Much love to the Islander crew; I've known them for years but never had the opportunity to see them do their thing in a wide open boat bite. Smooth! There may be others as good but certainly none better.

Next year's trip is already in the works. It's going to fill fast.

Now on to my photos. Sorry to do it to you, but you'll have to click on this link to check out my snaps: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4001&id=100000298961000&l=c6a52b0523 (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4001&id=100000298961000&l=c6a52b0523)

Roughly 51 weeks and counting until the next go-round…

First and foremost, Thank you Sean and Paul for putting together such a great adventure. The fellow Islanders and crew were amazing.
Totally exhausted still. Patrick and I stayed a day longer to have our fish processed as we had fish to deliver to family and friends in socal. I will try to put my fantastic journey in story form later but first a few pictures to start..

The combined knowledge on the boat was awesome.  Randy and I finally made good on Sean and Paul's years of patient tutelage and scored our first kayak YT.

Other highlights were the Poke' snack served to us on the water courtesy of Sean's contribution of the first boated Yellowfin to the galley.

And the two nights of making bait.  You know you are having fun when 20 people can all be working the rails with Sabikis in hand and no one is tangled up, but LOTS of mackerel end up in the bait wells.

I had a great trip.  I didn't get to use my yak much because of the strong winds.  The wind really sucks when your trying to drift dive and can't paddle.  San benitos was fun yak dive.  The highlites of the trip for me was:
1.) finding Dan's tackle box after his yardsale
2.) Seeing a school of 100 yellowtail that were all over 25lbs in only 15 feet of water
3.) Swimming around with 4 yellowtial on my belt stringer.
4.) seeing an endless school of yellowtail, I am talking about 100s of fish over 25 lbs.  I wish I had my camera.
5.) getting to hang out with my old NCKA friends and making new ones, then see them all slay yellowtail!

Here are a few underwater photos I took before my camera housing flooded.

This was a trip I have dreamed of doing for a long time. My first time fishing warm water salt species. Being able to do it with some of my NCKA brothers was fantastic!! What a great group of folks Sean and Paul put together. I was honored to be a part of it. Thank you guys for all your efforts!! The Islander crew was second to none, and the boat was awsome!! Food off the hook and the service beyond any expectations. I learned a ton along with having a great time. Had the oportunity for a couple sleigh rides, and wore my arms out on the boat. Those yellowtail pull like nothing I've ever fought before. The captain did his best to try and provide us oportunities to fish from the yaks, but with the weather conditions being windier than normal, our choices were limited. Trying to find a combination of a spot calm enough for the yaks and have productive YT waters was a challenge. I think everyone got at least one on the yak before we cleaned up on the big boat, filling the holds in one day. It was an insane bite!!! On a calm day that spot would have been mayham on the water!!! Sure showed the potential with cooperating weather. Everyone got along wonderfully which makes or breaks any trip. Certainly a great introduction to the warmwater fisheries for me. A big thanks to Sean and Paul and the rest of the group for such a great time. Mother nature put on quite a show also, from flying fish, to acres of dolphins, crimson sunsets and rises, and of course the swarms of yellowtail we came into. Now what to do with all this fish....... feeding plenty of friends and neighbors and the boyz at the firehouse.

One of many tales....

On our thirty hour "ride" down the coast I was shown the ropes (literally) as the veterans demonstrated  their favorite knot tying techniques. One of the following days (all a blur) I returned to the Islander to grab a delicious snack of bagels, cream cheese, lox, capers and onions and was told by the crew the boat would be pulling anchor to relocate. I needed to retie my leaders and had just minutes to get back off the boat. I whipped out a couple quick knots, grabbed my snack, and hit the water. Once afloat I pinned on a 12" bait  and quickly deployed it in order to get to my snack.
Seconds later a familiar zzzzzzzzzz sounded off and it was game on. The fish had a good  head start on me and by the time I got over her she was on the bottom doing her best to defeat me. At this point I thought I had the mother of all fish and couldn't gain an inch on her. Sean was nearby and I questioned him on how to get this fish to come up, he replied with something like..is that your little  Trevala? which I replied yup. He then added something along the lines of... your outmatched. I laid everything I had into that fish (wishing I had spent more time to retie my leader) and she started to move again. Seeming like forever the fish began to show some color....green color..WTF?? Up comes about two feet of woody kelp stock (all the foliage stripped clean), a football chunk of some sort of coral, a ten pound rock, followed by  a 31.8 lb YT. Needless to say gaffing the fish was a bit of a challenge with all that distraction above the quarry. The fish made it into the boat but the "reef" slipped away before I could snap a picture of it. That's one battle I will never forget.....

I had the front row view of that drama! The steps to the water were more like a ladder than a staircase.
Mahi was standing one minute and plunging into the water a second later. In the process his his yak flipped over and his box of irons/jigs got tossed. :smt010
Justin came over and made a dive, asked what the box looked like, took off some weight then dove down and picked up the box. Justin said his gauge metered 60-70ft, I was 30-40ft off the transom and it was over 120ft. :smt103

Heres my Aquaman story, I hooked a jackpot fish which towed me around 100yds right into the boats anchor line. :smt011 It wrapped the anchorline. I handed my rod up to Shane the skipper who tried to unwrap it from the bow but it stayed tangled. :smt044 Then miraculously it popped off! :smt005 Justin had swam up and saw that my line was caught on the shackle holding the anchor rope to the chain, then unhooked it underwater  :smt004 Thats the fish Pal has in his facebook album.(http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs222.snc1/6918_101796859840279_100000298961000_48168_427961_n.jpg)

Needless to say I was more than happy lend Justin my tackle to participate in the Yellowtail  "Iron fest" we had later. AQUAMAN rules!

I saw Dan take the plunge also, and saw the look of disgust on his face. He actually managed not to swear (I would have sounded off) and sat back on his yak. I heard he slipped off the step and lost his box of lures, so I went and asked Justin how deep can he dive. He said about 80-90 ft. I told him about Dan dropping his load at the back of the boat and asked if he thought he could make it down to look for it. He said he could try. I asked  Shane how deep it was, and he said about 65ft. I relayed that to Justin and the next thing I hear is how Justin found the box on the second or third attempt!! Boyz' amazing...

Justin "Aquaman" is an amazing guy! A few years ago I might have lost my mind in disgust, but now that I'm Sean's age, I got a little upset and decided not to let it ruin my trip, so I just let it go. The next thing I know Justin is calling me on the radio telling me he found my irons. Woo Hoo!

Thanks again Justin!

Hey Guys, Thanks for letting Will and I be part of the trip, even in those rough conditions it was a great trip and I think everyone got an idea of the potential that island has for great fishing. I have done this trip before and we had grease calm conditions for most of the trip and it was off the hook. That great YT bite we had off the boat was had on my kayak last time, I got ten fish in about two hours. So anyone that is even thinking about going should jump on board as soon as you can, you won't regret it.
This episode of The Kayak Fishing Show will likely air on WFN in early March. If you don't get WFN call your cable provider and ask them to carry it.

What a trip...

Honored to be a part of such a great adventure.  Thanks to Sean, Paul and the crew of the Islander for putting this together, we all wallowed in the results of your hard work.  Even with the insane fishing and unmatched scenery my fellow Islanders were the biggest reason for this trips great success.  Can't wait for next year!

Didn't get a weight, but it was by far the biggest I caught on the trip and maybe a PB.  She hit the iron at Augustine in the gale and took drag on my heavier setup.  I love the color of those big calicos.

Hi Terry.  My camera may have survived the flood.  I soaked it in fresh water for a day to dilute the salt water.  Then the crew offered to put it in the engine room so it would dry out.  It seams to work now that I am home, but I doubt it will last long before corrosion takes its toll.

Going from the swim step to the kayak wasn't easy.  Im not surprised someone went for a swim.  It could have been worse.  I lost a speargun when I flipped my kayak in the surf on the first trip.

I forgot about unhooking your fish Shimy.  I was glad I could help out.  I know how frustrating it can be to loose a fish to something like that.

The pictures you guys took are awesome.  I only took a few stills before my camera got flooded.  I took a good bit of video though.

I am looking forward to next year.

A couple of things I forgot to mention.
One is that I got more sleep during this week than any other week I can think of. It was either eat, fish or sleep. A 12 hour straight sleep was not uncommon.
Another thing was how cool it was to not have to EVER worry about anything being taken from your room. All doors were left wide open for the most part.
It was also cool how everyone made sure I was plenty stocked up with fish as I didn't boat hardly anything.
Totally cool group to roll with.

I'm glad you like the video.  That picture of my camera in a cup of water cracks me up.  My camera worked for about a month, but the image quality got worse and worse until it finally failed.  Now I am on my 3rd pannisonic FX-07.  The first one died after getting pounded from recoil when I mounted it on a spear gun.

Talk about a great old report! Unfortunately we only managed to get this first trip in. The Islander started extending their shark diving schedule, which would have pushed our trip into the spring. Sean and I gauged interest, but it was too soon to repeat a trip that cost around $1800 at the time.

It pretty much killed the string of NCKA trips. It was great to see it finally revived last year with NCKA's Islander SCI mothership. With any luck the Allen twins and NCKA will build it back to the realm of the possible. They're up to 3.5 days this year.

The Islander has an open trip to Cedros possibly booked for this year!

*New for 2014* 5.5 Day Trip $1650
Fishing Cedros Bonitos and Mexican coast.
3 full days fishing

June 16-22 Monday pm- Sunday am

$1650 per person. Does not include Mexican Permits. Bring your own or purchase on the boat. This trip must be FULL (22 anglers) to run.

Yeah, we discussed that as one of the options when we set up our trip.  It looked like there was way more interest in a 3.5 day trip than a 5.5 to Cedros.

Regarding Alaska in 2015 ... what do you want to accomplish.  Let's set it up.  Psst ... we're heading to Kodiak this August.  Big butt kayak fishing at its finest!!!
