Title: Crabfest 2014 Report
Post by: vwool on January 26, 2014, 04:05:03 PM
Wow, this is the reason I l love NCKA!

Crabfest 2014 was a huge success, this was the biggest Crabfest to date! Despite there not being a great amount of Dungeness crab, there was not a lack of good times.

On tournament day I awoke from my teardrop trailer rental at 5:45 am and noticed what looked like a line of cars waiting for the gate to open. I couldn’t believe the amount of cars waiting for Crabfest. At this point I knew it was going to be a great day.  With minimal wind, we were able to get the day started and anglers registered starting at 7:20 am. The line in the morning for registration seemed like it was never going to end, but Narisa and Bill were able to keep the line moving.

About an hour and a half into the event the first Dungeness crab came in for measurement. It had been caught after a 30 min soak. Shortly after that more and more crabs were brought in for measurement. In the end there were an equal amount of Dungeness and Rock crab brought in for measurement. At 12:30 pm most of the kayaks were on the beach and the potluck started. There was a great array of food that five star restaurants can’t compete with, NCKA potlucks are in a league of their own.

Shortly after the potluck, the awards were given out for largest Rock crab and 1st, 2nd, 3rd largest Dungeness crab.

The largest Rock crab measured in at 6.23”, 1.38 lbs and was brought in by Scotty Swehla.

3rd place Dungeness went to Nate Lee (Spinal tap) with a crab measuring in at 6.6” and 1.48 lbs

2nd place Dungeness went to Tracey Ziomeck (sctrace) with her catch measuring in at 6.66” and weighing 1.82 lbs.

1st  place Dungeness came in measuring in at 6.78” and weighing in at 1.93 lbs. The winner of the biggest Dungeness went to Aaron Peters.

This year’s Grand Prize was a Eddyline Caribbean 14 donated by Eddyline kayaks. It was great to see all ten people at the end up there waiting for their number to be called. Wendal took home the prize and was super stoked, which was awesome considering it was his first NCKA event.

This year’s raffle proceeds went to the Diabetes Youth Families (www.dyf.org), an organization close to my heart. The raffle raised over $1600 and will support families and children living with Type one Diabetes.
This event would not have been possible without all the work behind the scenes, a big thank you goes out to: Dan Arbuckle, Ashlie Arbuckle, Bill Beckett, Jack & Kay Arbuckle, Joe & Terri Arbuckle, Ron and Suzanne, and my lovely wife Narisa. There are probably a few that I missed but know you are appreciated!

This event has been free since day one and it is all because of the great sponsors: Headwaters Kayak Shop, Eddyline Kayaks, Promar/Ahi, A.Bachar, Yakattack, NRS, Malone, Vacations in a Can, Costa, Liquid Image Company and Kala Brand Music.

And the biggest thank you goes to all the participants who make this the biggest kayak crabbing tournament in the world. Thank you NCKA!

Yeah! That's a blast. My first NCKA event, first ocean launch. Haha, the only thing missing was crabs in me trap.
All good though, did manage to win me a Brope.
Thanks for doing this.

Brope up fool!
Good stuff Vic. I'm glad we made it out for the festivities. Didn't get on the glassy water, but had a blast anywho.
Well done guys.

Thanks Victor, Dan, Eddyline and all of the sponsors.

Good times fore sure. Didn't catch a crab but had a great time paddling my Carribean in perfect conditions. Took a long walk with Karen and Molly, cooked a mountain of crab and served up the chili crab. Met some new folks, hung out with old friends, ate some good food, got some exercise. Life is good.

What a fun filled weekend. Thanks Victor, Dan, and everyone else involve of making another Crabfest tourney a success. Both Kiel's and Scott's crab cooking were delicious. I only managed to catch two legal dungies and one rock crab. I am looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

What an outstanding event!! :smt001  Thanks to all that made it happen.  Met nothing but great folks.  The food was EXCELLENT.  To the folks that made the sliders with the guacamole, that was so good!!  Thought of going back for seconds but I didn't want to be a pig!!  Next year, we'll bring more lumpia, it started to go before it made it to the table!  To the person that bought all the 300 series tickets, did you win anything??  To Terri and Joe Arbuckle, that Hobie Sport is looking better and better.

Thanks all, my wife and I had a great time.

Thank you Victor, Dan, and all the sponsors for this event.

This was my first crabfest but I never even went on the water. Left the yak n gear at the house so I could focus on the wife. I can't remember nicer weather at bodega and I always enjoy hanging with the NCKA family.

Thanks Vic and all the sponsors for a great time. This was my first time on the ocean and first time going for crab. I caught four rock crab on Saturday and my wife caught a legal dungie with a snare, so we had a crab dinner. Sunday I caught five rock crab and quite a few undersized dungies and rock crabs. Not good enough to be in the running even, but good enough. This was my first event where I didn't get skunked. Yay the skunk is over. Everything went well out on the water. All the planning and all the help I got here on the forum really paid off. Another great NCKA potluck. I'm going to have to be careful, I was a little tight in my wetsuit. It was nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new people as well.

My first crab!

It was much needed time spent with my NCKA family.

Wow, such fantastic pictures so far! Victor and the team....we had such a great time, both out on the water and off, visiting and chatting with NCKA folks.  I met quite a few and put names to faces. Wonderful event as always and you couldnt beat the weather. Fun ukulele playing Saturday night and I think we recruited a new member with who won the donated Uke! Im excited about the action video camera (Lic/Ego) and have already sent them a FB thank you. So sad to see the weekend come to an end. Back to ordinary life....

Victor, I never doubted it was going to be a epic event.  I wish the flu would have stricken Shilo and I a couple weeks after instead of before.  You guys are a dynamic duo - my vote; you two be dubbed Batman (Dan) and Robin (Victor) and we find a way to incorporate a bat signal (or perhaps a crab signal) into future events  :smt044

I had a great time, as usual!

I got there Friday evening just as my mugs rolled up. Got tore up on Friday night.

Just chilled for awhile Saturday morning, then headed out with Kiel to check his pots. Four pots on an overnight soak and all he had were a few rock crabs, so I decided I wasn't even going to bother deploying my gear. Headed back in and we all decided we wanted some oysters, so Andy, Shane, Adam, and I hit Tides Wharf for ten dozen oysters, two pints of beer, two bloody marys, and a double mudslide. I showed my dudes my old sharay slaying grounds and we headed back to camp to crush our oysters, plus another 30 or so that Tote kicked down. I kicked it until midnight, then shot home. Brought Derik back out on Sunday afternoon and he had a blast seeing all of his homies.

Mad props to DP for grabbing my paddle and my Kayakfishing.com tournament shirt.

Another great NCKA hook-up in the books. See you cats at the Forebay.

I only took four damn pics all weekend...

Victor, Narissa, and Dan, thanks for all your hard work in putting this together.  I had a great time hanging out with many old buddies.

The reports from Saturday were not encouraging and a warm sleeping bag was more inviting than getting into a cold wetsuit, but I felt too guilty and decided to go out.  Thanks to Fuzz, I had about 10lbs of bait in each trap and we dropped the traps as we paddled out. I probably had the most impressive bait.  I had a whole copper that probably weighed 6lbs in one trap.  Having never crabbed at Doran our plan was to follow guys that caught crab the day before.  That plan didn't work too well as we couldn't recognize anyone from afar so we just continued to paddle and would pick up our traps at 11:30 hopefully get back in time for the potluck.  I was lucky and got a legal in each trap with one of those being 6.6" putting me in 3rd place.

Lapu, "the fish not the cannibal," thanks for letting us share your food, drinks, and campsite.  G-whiz/Jedmo, thanks for feeding us and allowing us to be part of the "in" crowd.

A-hulls, fun hanging out even just for a little.

Crabbing was slow.  Working 4 rings hard for 4 hours for two legal dungees and a few rockies was still entertaining. Camaraderie on shore with the NCKA crew is always a pleasure!  Jack has already got me fired up about the Taco Stand for GS8.

Thanks Victor, Awesome sponsors and a well run event!

Being the winner of the Rock crab division I want to thank all the sponsors and a BIG thanks to Victor and Dan for a GREAT DAY!
This is my 2nd NCKA event and really felt the Luv from u all!
I know fishing takes a certain skill but crabbing really takes some LUCK.
Guess I had some flowing on Sun.
Thanks again for the fun and I only had 3 legals but we got 2 tasty meals from those babies!

Thanks Victor, Narissa, Dan and the rest of the Arbuckle crew.  Congrats to Aaron, Tracey, and Nate for finding some nice dungies in a big bay.  A big thank you to the sponsors.  Another memorable Crabfest in the books.  Ukefest 2014 was in full swing.  I'll see if I can't get my video and picts together soon.

Bring on BSS4 next!

Hi NCKA Bruddahs,

Crabfest 2014 was awesome! Since this was the first time for me, I did not know what expect and decided to go as I have been fortunate to have met some great NCKA Bruddahs since Fall 2013. I arrived around 8pm Saturday night and it was already dark. Trying to find my way to my campsite, I ran into a kind and generous Hmong Laotian kayak Bruddah and his wife all the way from Yuba City. If you see this post please write to me as I forgot your name. Anyway, he took me to find my campsite and then gave some firewood, which was a really nice touch. I walked over to introduce myself to some other kayak brothers who were staying in the trailer campsites. Bruddah from Monterrey thanks for you Aloha!!!
As I walked back to my campsite, it was a clear night with all the stars blazing with the sound of the waves close by. It felt so peaceful and quite magical.
In th morning as I got to see Doran Beach, it was just beautiful and paddling out with all the Bruddahs and some Sistas was an awesome sight.
I dropped my first trap fairly far in and then it was looking very crowded, so I paddled out way past the jetty where there was no one and dropped my last 2 traps. With half and hour soaks, I was pulling up a lot of juvies with some good sized adults mixed in. Looking like the crabbing was much better farther out, I hauled ass in to pick up my other trap and almost couldn't find it as my markings was kinda hard to see. I then pulled my trap up and took it futher out and line in up horizontal with the shore in deeper water with my 2 other traps.
I ended up taking in 6 Dungees 4 of them were good sized and one of them was larger than all of them. Was in the running for biggest Dungee for a little while.
I have attach a pic of my Dungees after I took them home and laid them out in my ktichen sink. I wish there would have been a prize for most Dungees caught.
Being too wasted after I got home to cook it fresh, I gave 3 to a neighbor-friend/couple and I put the 3 live crabs in a open pot and covered the top with a small wet burlap bag.  After I caught the crabs I put them in a 5 gal. bucket and covered them with a wet burlap bag from the time I caught them and later put some ice between the burlap bags for the trip home and they were still kicking when I got home around 7pm.
I heard that cold temperatures slows down their metabolism and crabs are able to survive longer.
I ended up cooking the Dungees this afternoon and 2 of them were still alive this afternoon, amazing!!
These were the sweetest, tastiest Dungees I have had far this season. The taste and sweetness was to die for!! My wife loves Dungees, she,  however has been in the hospital recovering from GI problems and told me to go to the Crabfest as she knew I really wanted to go to meet more NCKA Bruddahs. She's a sweetheart!!!
Thanks to Vic and wife Narissa for making this happen. Awesome prizes to die for. I am happy that the $$ raised will be going help young diabetics get support. Feels like good Karma passing forward!
This November when the Crab Season opens, I going straight to Bodega Bay. With so many young juvies now, there's going to be a lot of big adults around this Fall and Winter.
Mahalo to all the NCKA Bruddahs that I met.
Aloha.

Michael (Da Bruddah) Yamagata-Oakland

Another Crabfest in the books. I felt like it went by so fast! Wish I had more time to hang out with everyone. I know Victor and Narisa have been getting props left and right, but really enough cant be said for how they handled this event. Victor was a man on a missions getting one huge prize after another. He did a great job keeping the prizes local, and making sure they all got the press they deserve without making the awards into an infomercial. As always I'm proud to be associated with this event, because to me it's what the sport is all about. Good times, Great food, and amazing people. Also thanks needs to go out to Bill Beckett from the Headwaters Fishing Team. He was a huge help through it all. He helped me move at least 75 kayaks over the course of the weekend. Thanks to everyone who comes out and supports us, and a major thanks to the families behind the screens helping us sell shirts, clean up, hold babies etc. Can't wait to do it again next year.

I'm loving the shot of Irowlikethat looking like a super hero with a paddle in his hand.

Nater the crab terminator  :smt044

I had the same plan...follow Pondpoacher!  LOL!  Was great to see you and Fuzz out at the honey hole!  Looks like it produced a top 3 finish for us!     :smt006 :smt007 :smt004 :smt003  Congrats on 3rd behind my devil crab (6.66)!
