If I use a slow pitch metal jig for salmon do i have to use a single barbless "circle" hook or can i use a regular pinched barb hook?

From my understanding it depends on if you are moving "under power" or drifting

I'll be moving, by paddle, a lil' slower than trolling...while drifting to jig a little...then paddle...hmmm...not bait or live bait seems to be also part of the equation...not sure if they would swallow a jig whole light an anchovy morsel...

You can use a barbless "J" hook on a lure.   A barbless circle hook must be used when mooching with bait.

Thank you.  Is everything that is not a circle a "J" hook?  Kahle, Big river, octopus...?

The law reads like this - if you're fishing for salmon using bait and doing anything OTHER THAN TROLLING then you need to use a circle hook.

So, if there's no bait on your jig or iron then you can use whatever single barbless hook you want.

If you're trolling using bait you can use whatever single barbless hooks you want.

This issue is the number one reason for the confusion behind "mooching rigs", which are great for trolling and of course are perfectly legal.
