OK... Forget what I said about doctoring.

I just rented a video called "Billabong Oddesy" at Hollywood Video.... it shows that exact ride by Mike Parsons at Jaws in Maui.  It was a perfect 10 in the big wave competetion and they figure the waves were peaking at about 60 feet.  Unreal... great video... go rent it.

It may be real but there is definitely some trick camera angles that make the wave look way bigger than it is in the first part of the video. The, hold the little fish way in front of you, toward the camera effect. The wave looks 50 feet high in the early footage but later it seems to have shrunk.

Just the same he used a jet ski to get started, real men paddle into the wave.

Real men can't paddle into waves that big. They are moving way too fast. I would have a real hard time looking Laird Hamilton in the eye and telling him he wasn't a real man. He did manage to marry Gabriel Reese so he must be THE man. And yeah they did use camera angles when you are down in the trough of course the wave looks bigger. In my opinion that only makes it worse. I've been on the beach plenty of times looking out at moderate sized waves only to paddle out into overhead sets that scare the crap out of you. When you sitting in the whitewater at eye level those 6'-8' waves look huge, I don't even want to think what a 60' would look like.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

it is mike parsons, AKA "snips" riding, brad gerlach driving.

the location is jaws AKA peahi, north coast of maui.

it was at a tow-in contest in 2003 I think.

I've seen one of them "foil ski's" up at Shasta this year being towd by a wake boat.  It was different. Different from the usual obnoxious skiers and jetskiers that continually raced past our campsite.

Another terrific movie that includes the giant wave surfers.

It's called "Into Liquid"

sweat, tear or the sea.
