Designed by NCKA members for NCKA members, MBK will offer it's first Rig/Rescue/Surf for Kayakfishing Class from 9AM to 3PM on Saturday July 11, 2009. Myself and Holokai, MBK resident surf kayak guru and instructor teacher, will co-teach the class with an additional instructor added for the surf zone practice.

The class costs $65 per person and will be limited to the first twelve NCKA members who sign up (we may add a second class if there's demand). We had to bump the rate a bit because we added an additional staff member to effectively teach and practice the surf session. We felt a maximum four to one instructor to client ratio would be safer in the surf zone and you would get more personalized instruction.

The class will include: kayaks, paddles, helmets, wetsuits, paddle jackets and PFD, if you don't already have your own. Sorry, no discount for bringing your own equipment as you are primarily paying for instructor's time at a reduced rate from all our other classes already.

We will cover rigging a fishing kayak for saltwater fishing, paddle stokes and bracing, practice self-recovery (self rescue),and launching and landing in the surf.

MBK is a great area to demo boats and test your skills in the surf. The surf pretty much gets incrementally larger as you paddle north toward the hotel. This would be a great intro for beginners and a refresher for vets with tips on launching and landing at technically challenging surf launches from expert instructors.

This is NOT an actual fishing class (Allen Bushnell (scallen) has those covered through MBK), so leave rods and tackle at home unless you plan to fish before or after the class. You may want to bring your own surf wetsuit (I will be wearing a 4/3 mm full suit) or dry suit. NO hip or chest waders please. You may also outfit and bring thigh braces for your kayak.

Call MBK at 1-800-649-5357 and tell them you want to register for Aaron and Holokai's surf and rescue for kayakfishing class. Thanks!

Can't wait to see you guys there. This is going to be fun! :surf

Definitely looks to be well worth one's time.

I'm already signed up for SBD's SW 101 but I'd be interested in a round 2 (should it materialize) as I'm out of town on the 11th. :smt010   No such thing as too much knowledge when it comes to the ocean.

Sounds good to me. (Just gotta check with my scheduling analyst... :smt005)
What type of boats will we be using?
I really want to demo the new T120 in the surf.

We will be using open-deck, sit-on-top kayaks, preferably one you are currently paddling or are considering buying for kayakfishing.
MBK is an Ocean Kayak and Wilderness Systems dealer. The standard boat will probably be a T140 or P13.When you schedule the class, request the T120 and we'll try to reserve that boat for you.

You could also rig your T140 with thigh braces and show me up. :smt002

I stopped by the shop during lunch and talked w/Holokai. The new Tarpons look soooo cool! I haven't signed up yet but I will tomorrow.

You could also rig your T140 with thigh braces and show me up. :smt002

Who needs thigh braces when you're standing up? Doesn't everybody stand up and surf their kayak like a board? Backwards?  :smt003

I also signed up today, thought if I was going to get into rockfishing I had better learn about the surf launch / landing. Also talked my son into going , it did not take much convincing :smt044

Aaron

I will be there and will sign up this week. Will probably fish sand dabs before the class and will be using my P15 for the class. Will bring some dogs for lunch. Really looking forward to some more surf lessons so I can get rid of my "Capt Crunch" nickname. :-)

I was going to sign up.  I was suppose to have my left knee 'scoped today but it was pushed back till 6/25.  I'm not sure two weeks will be enough time for it to heal up and play in the surf.
