I was looking at a nice forecast at timber cove, something like 3 @ 13 but it is a SW swell. I'm thinking that would cause problems launching and landing even though it will be OK out fishing. How much will the SW direction cause difficulties?

it hits north of the gate hard. the sets will be large.....then nothing......then BAM!  the periods in between the sets will seem like it's a lake out there. Watch it for at least 20 min. before launching.

Be Safe and good luck!

I was out there yesterday and drifted way too far too fast for my comfort. Before i could blink the totem pole was way south of me.  Had one swell come from behind and my tummy didn't like it.  It was no fun and I like fun.  No fish for me, couple snags, maybe lings, seasick and better now.

Was it a SW swell? If so what was the launch and landing like? I'm trying to get an idea how much of an affect that direction has when the swell is able to come straight into the beach.

Yesterdays swell was 260 degrees and I believe that is souther than the 280 degrees I see now, I had no challenge launching or landing.  3ft @ 11sec.  Hope that helps.

Like  Fishhunter said, there's usually long periods of calm between sets if it's 3' 15 secs. I was at Pillar Pt. last Sunday and that was the case. You never know but if you get all ready for the surf zone and see a set come in,go right after that and you should be good.
