Hobie Kayaks / Rudder up Hobie tracking modification
« on: June 07, 2017, 08:28:14 PM »
I found this post on the Hobie forum about adding a small glue-on skeg to each side of the keel. Sounds like a good idea for someone who needs better rudder up tracking like for tough surf launches etc.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / WEIRD: Lowrance Elite 5 Chirp problem
« on: March 18, 2017, 11:18:16 PM »
OK, this is truly a weird problem but please don't speculate why it's happening. If you legitimately know why... please post.

I've been using a couple different Lipo batteries for the last 4 years or so on my Lowrance fishfinders with zero issues. First I was using two 5000mah in parallel and then recently a 10000mah single battery. Friday I went fishing and my FF would not turn on. When I pushed the on button I could see the screen slightly flash and then as I held the on button down waiting for it to boot up I could hear a very faint ticking sound. I ended up fishing blind all day and thank god the bite for lmb and crappie is so good right now I was still able to enjoy myself anyways.

Today I checked voltage at the end of the cables to the head unit and I had 16.7vdc. So I'm thinking bad head unit but I want to make sure so I plugged in an old 12.7v SLA battery I have and the unit fired right up. WTF? So now I'm thinking maybe with the head unit attached my 10ah Lipo is failing under a load. Nope the voltage stays steady and I even hooked it up to a 12v light fixture which it then powered for hours with no problem. So I grab my 5000mah Lipo and hook it up. Acts the same as the 10000mah. I try to hook up the 10000mah after it's powered the 12v light and the voltage has been lowered to 15.3vdc. Still won't work.

So basically after using this Elite5 Chirp for several years at 16.8vdc, when the Lipo batteries are fully charged, it now won't work at that high of a voltage? That's the only explanation I've been able to come to. The manual states these units will work from 10-17vdc and for a long time it did. Come to think of it I've been using one with my Elite 4 for even longer with zero problems.

I went and bought a new Lowrance Hook5, with Lake Insight card and sun cover, for $299 today. Brought it home and plugged it into my 10000mah battery and it fired right up. Well I don't like heavy ass sealed lead acid batteries and I don't like fishing blind.  :smt013 :smt005 :smt001

I think I killed your thread. And no I'm not using Tapatalk. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but when I try to post pics they seem to create a white page of death.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Lipo battery and waterproof case
« on: February 11, 2017, 05:13:15 PM »
This is what I've been using for my Elite 5 chirp. I got the box,  nylon cable glands, and the 12 gauge wiring connectors on Amazon. The battery and charger came from HobbyKing. The little gray foam around the glands just offers a little more protection. Truly waterproof  and lightweight.

about 2lb 14oz. That's still about a pound lighter than a regular sla battery but with twice the power capacity.

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie i11s & hooks
« on: August 28, 2016, 01:21:23 PM »
So I've been fishing off my i11s for several months now & thought I'd report back about the assumed perceptions about it's sturdiness vs reality. I've managed to puncture the right side chamber twice now. This is the side I always fish from and my hooks make contact with.

The repair kit instructions state to put one drop of the supplied glue on any hole 1/8" or less and let dry. Both of my holes were tiny pin pricks and the glue works great in completely sealing them up. The first hole was from a 8/0-4oz swimbait leadhead & I'm not sure about the second one might have been a 2/0 circle hook.

Both holes resulted in very slow air leaks where by the end of the fishing day you could see that chamber was low. If you sprayed the area with soapy water or windex you could see the tiniest of bubbles coming from the puncture.

So there you have it. Not the catastrophic hull failures that some assumed would happen but definitely there's a trade off between the low weight & portability of this material vs the sturdiness of a regular polyethylene hull.

Since both of my punctures were within a few inches of each other my long term plan is to add another layer of matching material over this small area. Maybe a 6" by 2 feet strip.  I believe one additional layer of thickness would end any further leaks and let me continue to enjoy this super fun feather weight craft.
That being said I'm still glad I didn't try and hoist that thresher shark aboard when I had the chance recently.  :smt005
