Title: Where to chase rockfish out of Lawson's?
Post by: bioman on October 17, 2017, 10:44:48 AM
I've been lurking for years to find the answer to this, but finally just going to ask....
Where is closest rockfish location to Lawson's or inside Tomales?
I've been paddling across Tomales (sheltered) for a while chasing crabs, but when I see the Lawson's pictures with a pile of rockfish, I'm envious.
I believe, these come from out the bay and around the corner...on the exposed west side of Tomales Pt. which I'm not completely ready for....

I normally fish monterey bay, but I've been to tomales and caught rockfish and halibut around the point near Bird Rock.  The point is dangerous on a kayak...shoaling waves are common.

I've heard rumors of pbs taking lings and rockfish from the west shore of the bay when it's too rough to cross the bar. I guess you would have to find the structure. There are some rocky cliffs on the west shore and rock marks on the chart so that might be a place to start. I've thought about exploring but so far have ended up just driving the extra 45 minutes up the coast to the coves.

Beware of the outgoing tide. It can rip out through there.

The sandbars at the mouth of Tomales Bay are not to be taken lightly. It seems like just about every year a boat goes down in that area...

You’re probably better off making the drive north to the Sonoma Coast or south to any number of spots.

(Yes, there is good rock fishing outside Tomales. Just not ideal for less experienced kayakers.)

Yeah, I'm not talking about crossing the bar to the west shore of the Point Reyes Peninsula outside of the bay. Highly experienced people in big pbs have died there. That would be crazy on a yak on any but the calmest days, and it would still be crazy. I'm talking about the west side of the Tomales Bay, the east shore of the peninsula, inside the bay. The outgoing tide does rip through there though as CptSloppywood mentioned. You might find yourself crossing the bar involuntarily if you aren't careful.

Two weeks ago I was hiking out at Pt. Reyes . Signs were posted that Monterey Bay Aquarium  and Montana State University ( yes Montana ) would be conducting tagging operations on GWS from Sept.2017 thru Feb.2018 along the Marin-Sonoma coast  :smt003
