Title: Fisherman's Life video - No bueno
Post by: FishingAddict on December 04, 2017, 01:44:47 PM
I can't believe this guy, no radio, no wetsuit and dropped a homemade anchor.

Didn’t that dude almost die from diving for abs?

HeÂ’s got a good amount of followers on YouTube now. IÂ’ve been watching his stuff for over a year now and believe he met up with one of the members on here for proper abalone diving techniques. He seems like a good guy and probly knows about ncka but fails to recognize and reduce hazards and risks associated with the sport. His first abalone dive video was very cringe worthy but is doing better now. HeÂ’s got entertaining content but yeah hope he starts to focus a little more on his safety rather than what his next video will be. Most of us started out with the bare minimum just to get otw (if even that). He doesn’t post much kayak fishing videos but the next time he’s out I hope he’s geared and prepared more appropriately.

I saw that video as soon as it came out. For the reason you stated, I gave him a negative on that video and left a comment asking him to do a video focusing on kayak safety. Seriously, it could be his last video if anything went wrong that day.

I met up with Matts and helped him with ab diving safety. He’s a good guy and loves fishing.

Are you guys really trash talking him for not having a wetsuit and using a home made anchor? :smt044 He’s wearing a PFD which is more than I’d do. Sometimes this site cracks me up...

Hate all you want, he’s still getting paid  :smt005

I offered him complimentary safety gear if he wants to make more kayak fishing videos. He is a good presenter, and I would like to see more of his stuff without cringing every 5 seconds.  :smt044

Thats really nice of you. I'm sure he will take you up on advice and gear.

As for the 200k subs, its youtube. On the same internet with people telling others to mix bleach and muriatic acid to clean stuff. And here people are worried about this not carrying a radio.

The nearest first marine responder is the HMB Harbor Master thats about 30 miles away.
There is next to no cell phone coverage at PP.   Yeah its important to carry radio.  I dont get your analogy about mixing stuff on youtube.  This a safety forum.

That's his choice. Some people know the risks and accept them. Those that don't know the risk can be educated and offered up safety gear like Archie did(kudos).

I honestly don't care about wearing a PFD or a radio. It's my choice, and I don't understand why it seems some on here like chastising others for their decisions in life.

If you don't get my analogy about randomly trusting people on the internet without doing your own research about an activities safety, maybe you should try mixing those two. (POOR JOKE DO NOT MIX, TOXIC)

Youtube is filled with unsafe activities. Some downright suicidal. If you "can't believe this guy" you should really poke around Youtube some more hahaha....

Yeah except it is quite a difference.  That is such trivial crap to worry about. (On others. For yourself, yeah worry about it if you want)

I saw someone cross the road on Youtube today without a crossing guard. They looked both ways, but still, they didn't have a crossing guard....I should create a post about the crazy guy :smt044

I think he only wants to accept free gear if its part of a paid sponsorship package.

He had a video of him crabbing for crabs during the Domoic Acid closure when it was illegal to crab.  He seems nice, but flaunting that kind of stuff is just wrong.

Love Fisherman's life videos but when I saw this one I thought WTF.....PP, not dressed for immersion and solo?

That $#!+$ crazy!

But whatever sounds like he's getting paid and some of the sketchy spots he shore fishes from are likely more dangerous than this........so no comment from me just not going kayak fishing with that dude!

I really enjoy watching his videos and the risks he takes seem typical for myself and others when we were that age. I no longer feel invincible these days and carry a GPS when mushroom hunting, PFD when fishing the rocks etc.

What bugged me the most was the filet job and the cooking...and that I watched that whole thing to see a short cab and a bny caught...and he had zilla tackle that he got from his sponsors, was in a fishy area and came home with one dink...

And 25 feet of rope for an anchor? Why you anchoring bro? And 25 feet of rope??!  :smt005

Besides that I don't care if he falls in and freezes or can call for help or not...we know he has immersion gear and if he doesn't wanna use it and wants to go out solo from PP or BH good for him...would make for a more exciting video if he got in trouble.  :smt002

EDIT: I'm just grumpy today. He seems like a nice guy, and I really don't want him to fall in or get hurt obviously. I was just bummed that I didn't get more fish porn out of the vid.  :smt002 :smt008

Its because the second he dies b/c of stupid decisions around safety, there will be more of that sweet CA red tape we all love just to get OTW.  Reading through post after post where veteran fisherman are chastising a newb is a great way to gauge relative safety precautions to take.

I'd have to admit, we (NKCA) do spend quite some time criticizing what other people should have with them otw.  Of course we all know that a wetsuit, pfd, radio, etc will save your life someday or it may never come to that even.  I guess we can critique and point things out, but in the end, there are some stupid ass people in this world and sometimes, there is nothing we could do to change their ways.  We can only try to point them in the right direction and hope they listen.

However, this dude in the video seems like he will need another "uh oh" experience where he's separated from his kayak and paddle and needs a rescue since he neglects to take peoples' advice.  How else does one understand the need for these items if simple friendly advice doesn't work?

On another note, I can tell its winter!   :smt044  :smt044

People do what people do. On a kayak, car, boat, bike on foot.
I didn't ever think about sharks until I talked to fishunter.now even in the bay early mornings I get the jaws movie sensation.

Live n let live and all that stuff.some learn the easy way some learn the hard way.
I'm just glad the few times I was on the blue in regular clothes I didn't capsize

I've watched tons of Fisherman's Life videos, and enjoyed them thoroughly. The content, editing, and his chill personality make for extremely easy, enjoyable viewing, but I, too, was surprised to see him out at PP without "requisite gear." Not sure why he chose to go out the way he did, however, to his credit, he did check on the wind and swell before going out, and luckily conditions stayed true to the forecast.

This spring will be my first time out in the great salt and I've already 'loaded up' on safety equipment that was recommended by anglers on this site. Hopefully, Matts will continue to entertain with his cool videos, but anglers will read and follow the advice found on these pages.

Couldn't agree more! His content is across the board helpful, and ever sense to he recently go a little inflatable boat and outboard, i doubt he will be trekking out too far in the yak. With that said, not having spent too much time out far from various rock walls or beaches, I feel like I should invest just a bit more into some safety equipment.
