Title: Simply Fishing Heads up!
Post by: fishkraft on February 07, 2017, 10:47:15 AM
Heads up! We're almost sold out!

(http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab32/fishkraft/Screen%20Shot%202017-07-27%20at%206.28.27%20PM_zps4witw3jw.png) (http://s847.photobucket.com/user/fishkraft/media/Screen%20Shot%202017-07-27%20at%206.28.27%20PM_zps4witw3jw.png.html)

You can go and check out the website www.SimplyFishingTournament.com
or go straight to Eventzilla
http://events.eventzilla.net/e/simply-fishing-tournament-2017-2138900983
and bypass all the pretty pictures.

If you're new or just have never heard of it this is the fifth year and it's a pretty good time.

The theme of the tournament is simplicity... old school kayak fishing. Nothin' fancy, just the angler and his/her gear, testing their skills.

This year, by popular demand, I have added a fly fishing/rockfish division. Just as the conventional/lingcod division is won by catching the heaviest LINGCOD, the fly fishing/rockfish division will be won by cathcing the heaviest ROCKFISH. You may only compete in one division. All other rules are the same.

In keeping with the theme I'm gonna level the playing field by limiting each angler to one rod and reel and four lures or flys (provided), everyone in each division fishes the same three lures or flys, no bait, no scents.  No mechanized propulsion systems, no sails, no fish finders, no GPS, just a kayak, a paddle, a fishing rod, landing gear and safety equipment

$1000 in prize money

HUGE THANKS TO HEADWATERS KAYAK AND PRO KAYAK FISHING!

Are the goodie bags different for fly fishing and conventional?! I'm having such a hard time deciding what to do. The lures for conventional are sooo cool but I also just got an 8/9 wt saltwater fly rod... any numbers for how many people signed up for fly division?? Lol

Hi Annie, I don't actually do 'goodie bags" per se, but you'd get your lures (obviously you'd get flys instead of lingcod jigs) and a t-shirt (if registered by 9/1/17). Last year I threw in some gloves and stickers and I may do that again this year. If I do it would be the same for both divisions.

Regarding your second question... it is safe to say that the conventional/lingcod division will be much more competitive.  :smt044

I wish I could tell ya, Jack. Maybe browser settings? I'm guessing here. Haven't heard of any issues with others so there's no pattern to track. Sorry I'm not more help. Have you tried more than once? if yes, was it the same issue each time?

I think its been two years in a row the "campground full" sign has been out at ocean cove during simply fishing. If you can, arrange to share a spot with someone that arrives early.

I've fished everywhere up the coast especially as a kid.  I was spoiled and raised by my grandparents who fished and hunt from here to Canada.  Lol.  As far as from a kayak not as much but I've only ever camped at timber cove so I'm not very familiar with the camping aspect of the coast.  We usually spent our time camping in a 40' prevost country coach. ( like I said spoiled)  :smt044

Even if it says campground full, there is still plenty of room. This campground does not have numbered or designated spots. Its wide open and there will be room. If someone is actually manning the kiosk, tell them that you are joining people who are already there. Otherwise, just drive in, find a spot and go back to the store to pay for your camping and get a tag for your windshield. I am gonna set up the tacoshack on Saturday and do fish and chips for the masses. Please bring me any fillets you can spare.

Do you just set up camp along side the road or share someone's site? I agree there is empty space between sites, I just didn't know they will let you set up and camp there. I just figured that the campground full sign means they aren't letting any more people in. I know some campgrounds use a camp anywhere policy during the tournaments. I hadn't heard that ocean cove was one of them.

Is this a challenging area to launch and/or fish? I'm thinking about joining, if nothing else to meet some folks and enjoy camaraderie, but I'm a noobie so my water skills aren't fully developed...sounds like a blast though!!

Registration for the event is inexpensive and you get some good loot out of it. I recommend you come just to meet people, regardless if you fish in the tournament or not. There will be lots of people, I'm sure someone will help you launch, and you can tag along with someone I'm sure. Hell you can fish with me if you want. There will be lots of people, so you will basically be fishing in a group anyways. Safety in numbers. Hope to see you there.

Come up and check it out. If the launch or ocean looks to difficult you can volunteer some how. Helping to check kayaks at the launch or something. Bring a dish for the potluck and join the party. If you feel comfortable with the conditions on the water you can go fishing. Either way you can enjoy the day.

OC has a camp anywhere policy every weekend.
That's good to know. I was thinking about camping this weekend.

According to Ocean Cove, once the full sign is up no more people are allowed to purchase a site. If you are going in to join someone in a site, you can pay and get in.

YES! Actually two raffles, Both benefiting Stephanie Lopez (StephKillsIt) to aid in her recovery. First is the Stealth Kayaks Fisha 460 you can get tickets online here: https://www.simplyfishingtournament.com/kayak-raffle-1 (Great option if you want to use your credit card or PayPal balance) or you can buy tickets with cash at the event. Second, we will have the usual raffle of kayak fishing related items as well as other things. Sorry for the lack of info this year. I've been buried lately.

I am going to post an update on lure sponsors and raffle donations. To backtrack just a little bit SFKT will have two distinct categories this year: conventional and fly fishing. Anglers compete in one or the other using lures provided by the tournament ONLY. (It seems to me that the value of the lures equals of exceeds the cost of registration)
First I will list the lures you will receive from the gracious tackle sponsors
Convetional Divison:

*Not One, or Two, but Three Scrimpz Sacmpis from Candy Bar Lures/ Megabait Lures for EACH angler a proven fish catcher

If you can arrange for someone to pick your stuff up at the event you're welcome to it. Send me a P.M. letting me know who you designate so I don't give it to the wrong person.

I just cleaned out my local store and got 6 boxes I will bring, may be able to stop somewhere on the way up in the morning and try and find some more....

So first time launching at Ocean Cove for me, do we pay to launch at the store and then park at the upper parking lot?

Also looks like a rocky shoreline,
Is it likely that a fiberglass kayak would get beat up at the launch?

Went to Ocean Cove this weekend for the annual Simply Fishing Tournament. It was a beautiful weekend on the coast. Nice weather, great food and lots of wonderful people. I traveled alone and left my kayak and fishing gear at home. I enjoyed three relaxing days of reading, sipping wine, lots of hugs and laughing with good friends.

Congrats to the winners. Also, many thanks to Ruben, your family, volunteers and sponsors for making this a very enjoyable and successful tournament. I'm already looking forward to next year. :smt006

Wow, another awesome event that did good to help out Steph and her family.  It was great seeing her there with a smile on her face.

What an awesome weekend, if you were not there, you missed out big time.

All you can eat fish and chips!  All you can eat oysters!  Killer food brought by everyone like usual.  So glad I was able to make it out.  At night we had super clear skies with the Milky Way over the entire sky.  The weather was perfect!

Awesome job Ruben, thanks for throwing a great event!
