(08-18) 08:01 PDT SAN FRANCISCO --

A search is underway today in San Francisco Bay for a man who went missing after his canoe capsized, sending him and his two friends into the water, the Coast Guard said.

The canoe with three men aboard tipped over near Treasure Island at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday when , said Coast Guard Petty Officer Caleb Critchfield.

Two men swam safely to shore, but a third man climbed back into the canoe, Critchfield. The two friends went home to change, returned to the shoreline and could not find their friend.

The names of the men were not released. It was not known whether they wore life jackets, Critchfield said.

Their "friend" is probably fine, he was able to get back in the canoe right? They havent seen or heard from him cause he's probably just not talking to them after being left for dry clothes.

Yeah, I too would have gone home, cooked up some hot ramen, watch some TV, and text my "friend" if he was able to load the canoe OK and got home safely.

If fine mean dead, then he's just peachy!  "The body of a missing canoer was found Thursday afternoon on the shore of Brooks Island off of Richmond in San Francisco Bay, the Coast Guard said."

Note to self:  don't go out in a canoe in the bay, esp with two mastholes

As someone who has swam TI a bunch, all i can say is "WTF x 100000!!"  And why was SAR searching for the victim outside the gates?  The chances of that are about as good as me winning Caples on saturday

lots of q's with this story.

Why were they out in a canoe in the first place? Were they fishing, sightseeing (at night)? Drinking?
they were close enough to shore for 2 of them to swim in, but then the third guy manages to right the canoe and climb back in it but can't get it to shore? Could he not swim? even when there was a life jacket aboard? Ok so maybe the paddles were lost and the wind caught the canoe & it drifted away from shore.
Once in the canoe, he flipped it again? Did he ever get back in the canoe?

the fact that his two "buddies" went home says a lot. I think you guys are right to think this was a "hit" of some type. Strange story to say the least.

I'm hearing comments about this being deliberate, but my guess is that this involved alcohol, and dumbassery. These things are never in short supply.

Usually the simplest explanation will prove out in the end.

Can't always protect the foolish from the foolishness, but sad to hear someone drowned.
