I've got the Hobie Adventure (no Island), which is now known as the Revolution 16. And I've got the small Hobie sail. I was out on the water for a while on Sunday morning---the swells were generous and it was very bumpy on top of that (especially early). The rudder required constant attention, even without the sail deployed.

There wasn't much wind, but I did let out the sail a couple of times, and even put in the daggerboard. Funny thing was that with the daggerboard in, it seems to me that the stability improved. So, I left it in as I was pedaling around with the sail furled. Does that make any sense, or was I hallucinating (again...)?
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

the daggerboard will help to stop the boat from sliding when the wind is perpendicular to the side. it is added drag so you give up speed for a "straighter" couse.

I could see it would add a bit of side to side stability.

Though I haven't shared this story yet,....(last week)  There I was outside the jaws at HMB and the sea was angry that day my friends.
I was in my AI stripped to Revo 16 mode when I got rolled by a wave.  After getting her upright and myself back in the boat I put the retractable skeg down which greatly reduced side to side roll.

Never right side up or upside down.  Is this real or am I dreaming.

Before I converted my adventure to an AI, I rolled it at the jaws of Moss Landing when a boat waked me. I run hull only when it is calm or I have to traverse a lot of kelp. Most of the time I run 1 ama no sail. The dagger board will improve stability in choppy short periodicity conditions but if you need more stability, amas are a better solution.

I'm not qualified to advise on kayak sailing, but ...
standard sailing practice is the daggerboard will improve stability when you're powered up going to weather. Off the wind (downwind) you might want the oboat to be able to side slip, and to reduce drag you pull the board.  I think the same holds with kayaks. If you've got waves broadside or on the quarter, you might want to sideslip to keep the boat upright. A dagger board down in such conditions will increase the tendency of the hull to "trip" over the daggerboard.
So I wouldn't put it down in most drifting conditions, but when you're powered up in calm or upwind conditions, the daggerboard should help.

When sailing, and the wind pipes up (say 15 knots) it is common to pull the daggerboard halfway up to reduce the "tripping" tendency and to move the center of resistance aft. This only works on angled daggerboards, so I don't think it would work in an Adventure, but just so you  know. When it gets windy, pull the dagger board halfway up.   Btw, the reason amas work better in these conditions is they sideslip better and have less tendency to "trip" the boat broadside.  my 2 cents and worth it!
