How much more effort did it take to paddle to shore while straddling the kayak like that? I'm thinking that straddling a wider kayak is very difficult, requiring the legs to be under the fish (if you can't load the fish lengthwise) and making it more difficult to get out of the kayak. Amazing picture, just like the big ling you just got a the Bean.

Believe-it-or-not... the fight lasted 15 minutes max.  It's almost always faster from a kayak than a bigger boat.

I was using the standard "Erik Kunz" sturgeon rig (see link below) baited with ghost and grass shrimp.

First legal sturgeon, ever. 60 inches. January 23rd 2009 at the Oakland Airport. 5 feet of water. Thanks to Hojoman for the contrast enhancement of the original picture.

My very first sturgeon on the kayak at OAP 1-19-09. The fish was 59 1\2" long
and weighed 44 1\2lbs. At least that is what the scale said.

1-18-09 OAP 2 miles off the north end of the airport. Pumped our own shrimp at Tomales bay and fishin-jay brought the grass. 2 sturgeon/1 day First was 4 foot green sturgeon released 2nd a 59.5 inch white that I kept
