Unfortunately there are deaths every year on the coast.  He didn't die hunting Abalone.  He died when they got cut off by the tide and were in a place to long without proper equipment.  They attempted to scale a cliff and fell off.  When people take photos to close to cliffs and fall off they don't say photography kills another person.  And if someone dies of a heart attach on a boat they don't say boating killed another person.  But if Abalone has anything to do with what they were doing prior to the death it somehow is to blame.

Just sad all the way around.  I have been lucky and haven't had to make decisions like they made.  I do bring a cell phone, gps tracker and a VHF radio with me most times while diving, boating and Hiking.  I hope to never need one, but will be so grateful if the day comes where I need to use one of them.  Plus I have used rope to climb down some smaller cliffs and might have problems if someone removed or stole the rope prior to me making it back up.  It may hurt my pride to call for help, but I would get over it later when I was back home safe.

Be safe out there.

I can only imagine how tough it would be to swallow your pride and make the call for rescue, but it sure beats the alternative...

This is my first year of ab hunting and it's heartbreaking to hear of stories like this - hearing of people dying doing the things you like to do.  I learn a lot from these stories but at the same time I keep them away from my gf and family members because I don't want them to worry when I'm on/in the water. RIP

So true about comm, better to have it and not need it than to need it, and not have.  Terrible loss.  Prayers sent.  Stay safe out there brothers & sisters.

As usual, in hindsight, you can "coulda, woulda, shoulda" these situations all to pieces. Still sucks none the less. Hopefully if one of us finds ourselves in their situation, we learned from this and make different choices.

Condolences to the families.

Completely avoidable.
So sad to hear about it.
I agree that it shouldn't be attributed to abalone hunting.
If I was on the beach having a picnic and the tide came up and I was scaling the cliff to avoid the tide they wouldn't say another guy dies while picnicing.
Plan ahead. Have an exit strategy. Be safe.

It's disgusting seeing all these comments calling for a ban on abalone hunting because of the few, but well-publicized, people who die every season.  We really are demanding our own nanny state.

Someone actually gets one of my points.
