I have been looking to get into kayaking and found myself drawn to the uniqueness of the Raptor SOT. I am also considering a Hobie Mirage Revolution 13. Just wondering if there is a pedal drive option in the works for the raptor? Maybe it's the former cyclist in me that gravitates toward a pedal system lol
-
I have pondered this several times, but I don't think Jim is coming out with it anytime soon.
-
Check with Jim... He might just one off, build you one just to see if he can... :smt006
-
An alternative is the Native kayaks. Haven't tried one myself ... don't think it's for me ... but an option to look at if you like pedal drive.
-
I like them, Native has quite the set up. I want to see them get a better hull that cuts water better.... Otherwise you couldn't go wrong buying one... Those that have them love them even 6 mo's later :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
-
Check out the Native Slayer Propel at Headwaters in Lodi.
I've had one for a year and still love it
-
Stay tuned... For the past several months I've been VERY busy. :smt003
Baby's in the oven and it's like 4 months along. Pedal,,, Paddle,,, Motor or Sail. The G2 with a 410 lb weight capacity is due for delivery in 5 months. I feel like a proud papa already. :smt044
-
And that's all we get for the next 5 months?
-
How about 3 months instead of 5? I need to be able to put it on my Christmas wishlist!

Start saving now... It'll be well worth the price. Video presentation before Christmas arrives.. Possibly before Thanksgiving.
Spent long hours on this project... missed out on all the tournaments, :smt010 lost fishing days, etc have kept me out of touch with all the happenings at NCKA I'm overdue for some OTW therapy.

Half price for you Sonny,,, My new next Pro-Staffer... :smt002

Thank you Jim. I will sell either my AI or PA12 and put that money aside for the G2.
-
Put me on the list, this sounds like what I have been.
-
Will you take my currently 3 month old raptor as a trade in?
What color options you thinking of having?

This sounds like it could be awesome---can't wait to see it.

I'm excited as heck for your new production.
Thanks,,, Me too ! :smt002 I'd love to share a lot more about it,, just a little premature at this point.
For now all I can say is it sure is a lot of time money and labor involved in producing a mold like this. Besides the kayak mold, there's three other separate components to it that also need molds.
More speed has been the goal... Can't hardly wait till the first test paddle. ( pedal )
-
Is it still on schedule? Can't wait to try it out!

I'm so mad right now I can spit. A woman from Monterey Air resources board showed up at my door today, because someone complained about fumes... They want me to get a " Permit" from the Air Resources board.. Evidently I can do what I'm doing,,, they just want tax revenue... $ 1,400 dollars of revenue !!! If I were doing it as a hobby, it's free. I told her I don't make molds as a business, I sell kayaks , and they're molded at an Amish factory in PA. ... Making this new model is my hobby, so get out of my shop and stop wasting my time!
F'ng government has got way too big.
-
Nice move
-
Really? That's effing crazy!!! I'm in IT and I hate when companies outsource to other countries. Now I can understand a little that they may just not want to deal with the bullcrap bureaucracy and the crazy taxes the Gov't can think of. Sigh....

Beautiful! I'd be lying if I said I didn't get mildly turgid at the sight of well crafted tooling.
Is that a transducer scupper I see in the center?

Yes, Transducer scupper.. There's another segment to it that needs to be welded to the final aluminum mold.
Feels good to finally get this far. It's been nearly 6 full months to get here. I'm thinking by the end of February there should be a plastic version of the new G2 :smt001
I was thinking last night of ways to raise $ for the mold cost... Pre orders with huge discount incentive.
-
You have my interest, how much for a pre order and est on how long for delivery ?
PM me, I need an extra yak at the Cove ;0)

They're ready to start the casting next week. So estimating by end of Feb... first part of March. (If east coast isn't snowed in at that time, like last year...) Cost for pre orders 900 dollars.

Would we still be able to use our existing Raptor cart, bait well, and pump setup on this new model?

Would we still be able to use our existing Raptor cart, bait well, and pump setup on this new model?
Yes !
There will be an adapter that will allow the Mirage drive to fit. Eventually we'll have a second adapter for the Propel drive. And,,, no it doesn't include the Mirage drive, you'll have to shop that separately. Sorry, I tried asking Hobie for OEM opportunity... LOL You can guess their answer.
-
Is the adapter included with the G2 or is it sold separate and if so how much will the adapter cost?
-
Will the rudder come standard or optional? I am assuming it'll be hand control for the hobie guys? I am very interested, but still too early to commit.

You're killing me. Now it only makes me want it more!!!! aaargh.. Now I need to have one!! It's so close to Christmas though. What's the deadline for you to recv your 900? Will paypal work or is it cash/check only?
-
Will it work with the old drive? Or only the new version?
-
I tried posting response twice now... both times they are not uploading. WTF? I give up. Is the photo file too big?

Try to resize the picture to < 1 Mega Bytes.
-
Will it work with the old drive? Or only the new version?
Both, I just found out that the new version will work on all, just have to cut off that tab.
Will the rudder come standard or optional?
The G2 is designed to perform as a paddle kayak or Pedal. So rather than rig everyone with a hand control & rudder, only when ordered with that. Not everyone wants the pedal drive or the higher cost associated with adding a rudder. The way the Raptor tracks, a rudder isn't needed for paddling.
Is the adapter included with the G2 or is it sold separate and if so how much will the adapter cost?
Adapter sold separately ,, not set a price yet, as they've not gone into production. Guesstimating around 70 -100 dollar mark, retail.
So, now that I've downsized some photo's.. let me try again. What I wrote twice before ( got 86'd) was a bit about the features. There's an 8" hatch ring in front of the seat that will have a 12 x 16" interior storage "pod" ( all these pods get confusing..) Shown is the Paddle Pod,,, the removeable heart of the G2 with 4 scuppers molded partially molded in each half. It will get locked down with a cam lever latch . Simple and quick. This pod can be used to hold a battery, FF and transducer, or rig it as a live bait tank, or just store tackle. The Pedal pod will fit in that same hole.. there's two more additional scuppers on each side of the 8" hatch for a total of 6 to provide fast drainage during surf launches. Notice the recessed tracks on each side. I've altered the forward cockpit so that it's easy to slide fishing rods into the hull from the bow hatch. Getting back to the pedal pod, The mirage drive will get locked in and stay in the pod. You remove the entire pod as one unit. The pod acts as a sort of "life ring" for your Mirage drive in case it gets dropped overboard. There's a 600 dollar savings right there ! The untippable design of the Raptor will save you even more. :smt002
In the Cargo Bed, I've added a 6" access hatch in the floor and two more 4" hatches just behind the seat . There's now access to every part of the interior of this yak ,, ( for rigging. )
Transducer scuppers built in.. for alternate rigging...
That's about all I have for now. :smt006
-
lookin' good! :smt001

So basically, you've taken all the latest cool innovations on the scene, kayak fishermans' kayak design wishlists, and combined them into a super stable, razor tracking, fast paddling, rough surf survivng, not-too heavy, hands free optional, ultimate fishing kayak?
I'm sorry, but theres no way... for me to skip this. :smt003

And I want to get on the pre-order list too.

Yeah, the pre order thing was a last minute thought, with out all the details worked out. I've honestly been so busy with the hands on design / build of the molds that I've had very little time for anything else. My plan was to get a proto-type kayak on the water to film and run a Kickstarter campaign. Don't need a lot to get this going the total for the molds is 30K, of which I have half, plus credit to borrow. Would be great to not borrow, so pre-sale offer seems like a great win-win for everybody. I'll try to work out more details soon. Would not likely need a payment from anyone until we get closer to a production date.

Yup ! Driving over the Grapevine is like NASCAR, except got the 85+ mph drivers dodging a mix of idiots going 55, changing lanes for no reason.... A 16 hour round trip delivery to the foundry. Everything is set to go. After seeing all the patterns for the castings, they're pretty sure it will be completed in under 8 weeks. In reality ( I've found ) something usually will cause a delay.
Once the kayak mold is completed, I'll deliver it personally to Amish Amos ( LOL he's really a very funny character ) in PA. That way I can oversee the first run, rigging etc and bring a trailer load home.. Whew,,,, That's 9 months from conception to delivery ! :smt044

Jim,
playing the devils advocate, the afore mentioned peddle drive companies aren't going to give you a hard time will they? I can see one company in particular, not selling drives unless you turn in an old one, or buy a whole kayak that comes with a drive or some such none sense.
-
Awesome work Jim, can't wait to check out that baby when its all done!

I don't think this will be a big issue. What if someone loses the drive somehow, this company will force them to buy a new kayak just for the drive? Not likely.

There are lots of guys that wouldn't mind using their own existing drive inside a new kayak ;)

Any news? I sold my Raptor a week ago and am now without a fishing kayak but patiently waiting. I'm also wondering how the rudder will be attached. The way I used to load my Raptor, I had it standing/leaning on my suv before I pick up the two stern handles and easily lift it on my suv. I'm hoping the rudder system won't be interfering with this or at least be easily removed with a cotter pin or two. Jim?
-
Really looking forward to getting my hands on one of these.

I don't know if I missed it but the pedal drive is it similar to the hobies or is it like the native
-
I don't know if I missed it but the pedal drive is it similar to the hobies or is it like the native
Yes, exactly similar. To both :smt003. Page 5 has the details. It's gonna be a removable adapter system which will have a mount for the specific drive you have: Hobie or Native. Or... no drive use at all, just an awesome storage pod that's removable, which sounds similar to Viking kayaks' pod.

Me, me, me... I like to paddle, but also like the option to peddle. Jim, will a mirage drive fit inside the front hatch?
-
The Native will have to come later. That will require the seat be move-able. ( slide fore - aft )
For start, we'll have the Mirage adapter. The adapter stays on the Mirage unit. It's taken off or on with a single cam lever. This way the adapter serves as a sort of "life ring" in case it gets dropped overboard, it won't sink.
I'm not certain yet if it will fit into the front hatch with the adapter ring attached. I'm 80% optimistic it will. Should find out in.... 6 more weeks. :smt003
The mold for the hull was cast last week ! Huge accomplishment to get to that stage.
A few more days and I'll have the Mirage adapter mold completed.

Nooooooo. LOL ...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So here's the latest scoop. All four molds are now being cast at the foundry. I spent all day Tuesday down in SoCal working with the mold builder. The Kayak mold has been cast and is nearly completed. Estimate they gave was another 10 days before we can run put it in an oven. The plan it to run it locally down there to insure there's no porosity issues or inserts that need to be relocated. That will take a few weeks. Then I can haul it across country to the molders in PA to get it mounted into their oven. That's still a good 4 - 6 weeks away from today... I'm pretty optimistic that it won't take any longer than that. Oddly enough, this is the first time I've ever seen a project like this come in under estimated time frame. All good news... PPickerel's shop is going to laser cut the cam locks for the adapters. I should have the CAD drawings for him by tomorrow. Found some really cool side handles ,,,and the perfect control sys for the rudder.
I gotta say, I'm amazed a dumbass'ed carpenter like myself has been able to pull this off. Amazzzzed ! When you think about the entrenched kayak manufacturers out there and the resources they have... Taken it one step at a time.
Still pulling in quotes on parts.. For those who'd like to help fund this, I'll figure a fair asking price by this weekend. My guarantee is, if your not satisfied with it when you demo it, I'll refund your investment. I would be honored to see you guys OTW one day fishing from my creation. :smt006
-
Anyone that has ever seen the original wooden yak that you built, would NOT be amazed at your carpentry skills.
-
Thanks for the update Jim. Hopefully your "creation" will be ready for the RF opening day :smt001

Right on!!! That's great.

So, does that mean that standard Hobie parts won't fit? Just curious, because I've got a spare of just about everything (due to getting a kayak warranteed a few years ago). I'm assuming that at this point it will just be the plastic hull, then it'd be up to the buyer to build it up with parts from wherever. Sorta like buying a bike frame, and building it up. Again, just curious, and can't wait to get my hands on one...
-
^ I think he is making the hobie and the pedal propeller drive adapters.. It's in his previous posts..

Nope, he laid it all out on his previous posts. It will be a multi drive type of yak. Pedal or paddle. Not everyone will use it to pedal. He'll have an adapter for the mirage drive. You'll have to supply your own mirage drive of course.
-
Any updates Jim?
-
I'm still waiting myself . It's like sitting in the dark, but at least able to have some free time for crabbing,,, finally. Looking on schedule for everything to be completed on time. I'd guess before the end of March I should have a trailer load headed to CA. :smt001
Still working on details for rudder control. I want something that has a bit of friction adjustment. So the rudder can be set and held in position without going back to center. Waiting ( again ) on a sample part to arrive.
Just resolved the seating issue. By tilting the seat back ( to reclined position ) it makes for a really comfortable feel, even while paddling. Tested it for several hours yesterday at Moss Landing. I should have made that change a long while back. It's back to the shop for changes to the seat base mold now... There goes that "free time".
With the "Paddle" insert, and seat included. It's looking like $ 950 for a pre-order. That's FOB our Watsonville shop... Need the payments by the end of February. Mailing address is on our website. I'd estimate an additional 200 dollars to add the rudder and controls.
For now,, just can't quote a price for the pedal version yet.
-
I'd be happy to put down on that new Raptor Jim! Let us know when your ready to receive funds for it!
-
I will send the payment before the end of this month.

Give me the how /when/where...I will take care of my end. This is the boat I have been asking for! Now it comes to me SS Squidder!
-
mirage drive for the raptor is a great Idea. Want to see it happen. I will take it to the bean hallow for the test drive :smt007
-
Check is in the mail.
Any estimate on when the mirage drive insert will be available?
-
Just wondering if we could see an artist rendition of how the yak will look fully loaded? I especially would love to see the rudder section and the ff transducer.
Will the rudder be retractable or will I be able to stand up the kayak on the stern end?
For customers intending to use the pedal system with the rudder, should we send you the 1150 now and we'll just have to pay a little more when the pedal adapter cost is ironed out?
-

$1,150??? Please don't read between the lines.... You get a paddle version for 950. For appx. 200 more we should be able to outfit the rudder, control and mirage drive adapter.

If you're uncomfortable and don't understand what it is you're buying, it might be better to wait until we have the fully rigged Pedal version so that you can have a better understanding. The pre-order offer is made here to assist in funding the mold cost... The low initial price is the incentive and reward for your helping to fund the start-up. I'm not looking for a "down payment" , full 950 or nothing please. I need to limit this offer to 8 NCKA members. I already have 6 commitments from Texas and several more going to Florida. After this, price is going to be based on MSRP... ( whatever that amounts too ). I'd guess you will save around 300 bucks, but more importantly, you're helping a small company to grow. You'll be part of the effort to " Make America Great" again... :smt044 ( I crack myself up sometimes )
Like I said earlier, if you're not happy with the kayak after you see and demo it... I will refund your "contribution". I'm not sure what colors I'll have available, so that could be an issue. It would help if you include your color selection with payment.. plus be sure to include Name, contact info, etc. I know how to find Sonny, Al, (Mark is always at the dock... LOL) . I'll be honest here, there's still a few things "up in the air" as far as the small details. So you decide for yourself. We don't have a firm date on when it's going to be available, so please, no whiners! " Is it ready yet? " messages. I got enough shit on my plate. Think of it as buying stock, you"ll just have to be patient. If you don't have the patience, please don't send money.
Yes, the rudder is retractable, TruCourse rudder made by Sealect Designs. Rudder mounted at the stearn, so no, you can't stand it on it's end while the rudder is attached. It also makes it a PIA trying to wheel the kayak using a Raptor Cart... Might be more comfortable using a conventional kayak cart, unless you don't mind the rudder tucked up your nuts. :smt005 ( I've got an idea for relatively simple way to hinge the rudder mounting to eliminate this issue )

Good info. Thank you. I apologize for asking too many questions. I was a little too eager, curious, and excited about your new design.

Saaaaweeeeett ! Thanks. We even got a few guys all the way from Texas throwing down from this post.
FYI Just talked to the guy making the molds. He says " almost completed, a week, two at the outside". Still a lot of misc little parts that need to fall into place. Pretty exciting stuff... :smt001
By the end of March, I'll finally pedal a kayak for my first time,,, ever ! ( Exception being my own contraptions ) Yup,, it's true! I've never demo'd a Hobie. Hope that mirage drive is as good as they say it is. :smt044

Baitman, in the picture of the pedals in your new insert, I see a white one in the background. Is that a plug for the hole if you do not want to have anything there? If that is a plug, is it flush with the floor? If it is not a plug, how hard would it be to create one? I am somewhat concerned that the new G2 may have some issues around standing if the pedals are in. The plug would manage that for me.
-
I believe you can use either the mirage drive adapter OR a removable pod (for electronics etc). It would appear easier to stand & fish with the electronics pod compared to the mirage drive adapter. BUT in my opinion, it will be easier to stand & fish from the G2 with mirage adapter than it is to stand & fish from a Hobie Revo/Outback/Adventure thanks to the additional deck space and overall stability. Just a guess though.
(also, if the mirage adapter floats...I suppose you can simply remove it and let it float beside the kayak while you stand & fish or pee)
-
Take both out and it become an Asian outhouse. (Toilet hole) pretty convenient I must say.

That part in the background is a plug, for a casting, used to form the seat base adapters. It needed more tilt angle ( recline ) to be comfortable while paddling.
If you've a need to walk around the deck,,, might want to consider a Predator. You won't need to stand that far forward in the Raptor... quite possible you could stand in the back cargo deck, some do that already. With the added floatation and space, you could easily enough put a small "Tiny" size person back there. :smt002 Or a big dog.!! There's a large flat space between the seat and drive insert to stand.. that area has a watertight 8" 1/4 turn access hatch,, Open that and you'll find a 12 x 16" wide rubberized storage "pod". for,,, bait, tackle, phone, throwing net... lunch.
Might make a " plug" in the future that will allow a fully flat deck, but I don't see that as being a need at the moment.
Just a few more weeks,,, we'll have a video that will answer most of the questions.

Yup. :smt001 That makes three more,, plus the Texas boys that picked up on this thread.
Totally STOKED ! I'm very appreciative to all of you for your trust and support. Spent the day clearing tools out of my truck in preparation for this trip across the continent. I'm soooo ready for this.
-
Just went back out to their Facebook page and saw a more completed version of the G2 there. I guess that is the mold. I have to admit that it is looking much nicer that I expected.
-
The kayak will weigh around 40lbs?

I'm waiting on the intro video
-
Man I really wanted to jump on this, but the Taxman is knockin' :smt009
-
The kayak will weigh around 40lbs?
No, that's the weight of Jim's custom fiberglass Raptor.
I don't know how much the G2 will weigh, but my guess would be 60-75lbs?
-
The kayak will weigh around 40lbs?

Hey,,,, I will personally make anyone a 40 lb G2 for only 125 dollars per lb. :smt002
-
Baitman, on the G2, how easy would it be to attach an electric motor (like a MinnKota) on the back wall so that I can just screw tighten it on? And, a causal observation: Looking at the number of views, your new G2 looks like it is one of the hottest topics (Kayak Section) in the last six months on this forum. Not bad before it has ever been really seen !!
-
Senior discount? AARP?
-
What's funny is how old this thread was started before I even had the idea. A seed was planted.
Should be able to easily figure something out. I designed the transom area specifically to hold a Minn Kota. planned for steering control, line placement, etc. BassYaks had a version that allows the motor to raise / lower ( tilt ) using the feet.
Been watching a guy in TX with a cool design that uses a linear actuator to raise / lower his Minn-Kota.
Pre-sold 13 so far,, with two more promises of " Check in the mail" .. Thanks to all for your support in this ! The final parts are all falling into place. Every day a new idea formulates that improves on it. You're going to love the steering control design. "Set it and forget it." No need to keep your hand on the tiller.
Sure hope it works... :smt005

This would be awesome...I have to keep my hand on the rudder control of my Hobie Revolution because it doesn't hold course. On an average trip, I probably touch the rudder control level 100 times haha!
-
Here's the latest update.
Spent yesterday at the mold builders shop, going over the final details,,( insert locations, Texturing etc )
All 4 molds are nearly complete. Expect to run the first parts next week... (optimistic guess-timate)
After yesterday's visit, I can sure understand why it takes so long to build an aluminum mold of that size. There's sure a lot of man hours that goes into getting it right.
Fingers crossed it works right the first time. :smt002

We are all waiting with "baited" breath ...

Speaking of inserts, is there going to be a slot for the daggerboard, as on the Adventure/Revo 16? That's a real nice feature for sailing.

The turbo fins made a great dagger board.

Maybe time to do a group buy, lol?

I'm currently sitting in this incredible Amish hotel. The Leola Village Inn. Spent a good 12 hour day tweeking the mold. The first part we ran came out great, except for the two rear scuppers are not closing off. Trying a "trick" to remedy the situation... gotta wait until tomorrow to run a third kayak from it... Surprisingly , the components all fit together perfectly.. Tracks, pods, etc... Huge relief, because I gotta confess, I did have a few doubts. Those sort of things don't usually come out right the first time like that..
Sweet Water IPA in hand, celebrating the " birth " of my baby... Ahhhh Life is good !
Cheers y'all, I'll update tomorrow's results. Fingers crossed.

This just keeps getting better and better...
-
I've been here in PA a whole week now... so far we've only made a few good kayaks... working out the kinks in the mold. Some of the flanges didn't fit right... other parts needed adjusting. I literally spent the entire night in this 40,000 sq ft warehouse all alone. Pulled my truck inside and camped here.. Worked on the mold until about 10 last night, welding, shaping, drilling...
Finally learned how to tig weld aluminum ! University of Hard Knocks... :smt044 Now if I can learn how to operate this new lap top... I'd post some pics.
This is fun ! ( I think not )
Parts all seem to fit perfectly,,, so must have done something right this time.

Was that with or without a tail wind? Against or with the current? Weight of paddler, waxed hull, or really scratched up. A few too many variables at this point time. The poor man barely has them out of the mold.
-
I agree that the original does look more unique, but the new G2 looks more practical. If it has the same surfing stability as the original it would be my first choice. Looking to put the wife behind me in that big playground. Perhaps he should continue to offer both if that would work.

Would you believe I have 11 G2's ( with the G2 logo ) :smt002 on the trailer,, still have not paddled it yet. Big demo day event up here on Lewisville lake on Saturday. That's going to be my first opportunity. I still have to mount a seat. Bill Bragman from Yak Gear ( Viking kayaks) is here, I think Ty Southerland will be too.
The pedal adapter mold finally completed and shipped to the roto molder just today. Looks like we won't be able to test the pedal speed for another week, when I return. My wife is flying in tomorrow to help with the event, then we plan on driving back together with a stop to see the Grand Canyon.. check this off the bucket list.

Dallas. Demo event. We raced a Viking 200 yds to the bouy. Viking won by only a boat length.
The wake from a 250 lb paddler was non-existent. It turns easier, faster, and I headed into some deep choppy water to see how the change in the bow shape worked to eliminate hull slap I'd sometimes get. Zero slappyness!
(I just make up words ) Very happy with the results !

Do you have an estimated release date? I'm very interested in a G2 with the mirage drive adapter, rudder, and comfort seat. I'm moving to So Cal mid-June and was hoping to pick a G2 up before then, is that going to be a possibility? Do you have dealers in North San Diego County?

As many kayaks as you go through Sonny. You should see if they have a leasing program. :smt001

I want to demo this new kayak since it can do both paddle and peddle. I can not paddle my revo13. One of my leg gone cramp and it stuck at sea.

I'm pretty interested in this kayak but those rigid side handles could get in the way, especially when diving. Wonder if I could swap out for webbing.

Already removed those side handles,,, swapped out for webbing style.
Sonny,, Yours will be ready Tuesday afternoon. Just waiting on the hatch cover to arrive for the "Gear Pod"
I only have three of the Gear pods.. Hoping the rest will arrive this week. They've had the order for weeks now.... :smt012

Is it too late to change my name to Sonny?

Cant wait to take one for a spin. This is very exciting.

I got to try before I buy, (the minster of finance does not approve blind kayak purchases)but I think I was one of the first to post that the raptor with a peddle drive would be the perfect yak (IMHO).
Dumb question, but any chance this will be set for a sail as well in the future?

As soon as I get mine, there'll be at least one sailing...
-
Rigging the rudder control today. some parts arrived last night. That plus getting more G2's ready for pick up.
May get to take this out for the maiden test pedal tomorrow. All looking good so far.
-
Looking great, Jim! I want to come test one out, but it's a pretty good haul from Sacramento. When can I come down and be reasonably sure there will be boat(s) ready to try? (It's going to be my birthday gift from my VERY loving wife!)

If you only knew how many pedal driven contraptions I'd put in the water at this same spot...
I've only tested a Hobie once,,, for a few hundred yards. It takes a bit getting used too. First thing I did was reach for the paddle. Then I couldn't quite understand why it was so slow in turning upwind. I thought I had the rudder all the way over... Then about 50 yds out realized the rudder was up the whole time... LOL. What can I say... I was excited. It worked !

Congratulations! Beautifully executed work! Looks like I may have found my first kayak.

Why not mount the tiller on a horizontal surface so you can have a left right control? Having a fore aft tiller control is not intuitive at all.
-
You're supposed to put the paddle away Jim! :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 Congrats bro! Let's get some chrome on that thing!!!
-
That looks just right! Nice job, Jim. :smt007

Where would that be? Where it get's in the way climbing into it? On the floor where you'd step on it?
It's not all that confusing. If the boat is turning right and you want it to go the other direction, pull back on the lever to adjust it to go left.
Fwd= Right Back= Left.
I will say this. If you're looking for steering control that will allow you to wind through an obstacle course, this is not the kayak for you. The keels prevent it from swinging around. The rudder will allow you to control a course. I'm going to play around with a larger size rudder fin to see how that changes things, but not expecting a big difference. The larger the rudder, the more drag it creates. It was pretty windy yesterday in the video, with a strong outgoing current both going the same direction.
BTW Anybody notice the otter playing 15' away?

One gets used to a different rudder control than Hobie's in a hurry. Having the control out of the way is more important than repeating Hobie's system.

If you put Hobie's knob on their rudder control, it becomes a challenge to self-rescue on that side of the boat---at least on my 2013 Adventure. It looks like that's not going to be an issue with the G2.

This one is... Still waiting on a shipment of parts

Rudder control seems like something simple to get use to. :dontknow: :smt001
Hope to get some time to Demo one SOOONNN . Never tried one . looks interesting .
-
That rudder control looks a lot like the stick steering that is ever so popular in the FL/LA market with boats. Takes just a short bit to get used to ... Kinda like a sailboat rudder. :smt044

Not to mention that you can all but walk up onto the stern to get back in if you fall off while using it as an SUP. :smt044

Mental Telepathy. :smt003
Man,,, I've been at the shop all week long,,, not a soul dropped by. Lonely out there... LOL. Got them all rigged, except for the last parts all scheduled to be delivered tomorrow , late.
Sunday is probably going to be the best day for everyone to come in and grab their pre-orders. You saved a ton! Price on this is $1,540.00 plus tax. (Those that pre-purchased, sales tax is due at time of pick-up. )
Thanks to all for your help, and patience waiting for this to launch! :smt006 Last few months seem like a year to me.

Can you provide some dimensions, specifically the width at a couple of places? I am going to be in the market for another kayak in a couple of months and want to see if the G2 will fit on my roof rack next to my revo.

Stop by my shop with your Revo loaded next time you're passing through. We can see what's the best way to load it. Also you can take one out for a demo . Elkhorn Slough is a short drive away.
The back end is 34" at it's widest. It seems to nest well with other kayaks.
