Let me know if you have any interest in doing a year long friendly competition between divers.

Similar to AOTY, and the first requirement to participate would be that you would have to join AOTY (pay up)
to support the site in order to play.

You can pay for AOTY right now, see the box in the upper right hand corner of the front page for a Paypal link.

Your entries would NOT be entered or count toward AOTY but we would keep track over here, and have a few prizes
for top finishers or biggest entry in each category etc. Prizes TBD and announced.

If you want to play AOTY, see this thread for all the official 2012 rules:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,35010.0.html

If you want to play DOTY, sign up and pay via the AOTY PayPal link and then let me know via PM so I can keep a list of participants.

A few rules off my top of my head (aka borrowed from AOTY):

1.   All entries (fish, abalone, scallops) must be taken while freediving without any assistance (no other person can touch spear or abalone iron throughout entire process).
2.   Can be from shore or from kayak or dive board. No motoroized vessels or mothershipping or SCUBA.
2.   Photographic evidence of fish/abalone/scallop size (total length) against a measuring device must be provided. Abalone and scallops can be measured with ab gauge/calipers etc. Fish must be measured in a natural position with either the mouth shut or slightly ajar. The mouth can not be pulled/extended open.  Abuse of this rule will result in that entry automatically being disqualified.
3.   The pool runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Fish/abalone/scallops taken prior to payment of entry fees are ineligible.
4.   All fish/abalone/scallops entered must be caught south of the California/Oregon border and north of the southern borders of the following counties Monterey, Kings, Tulare and Inyo.
5.   The pool covers the following categories: Lingcod, Cabezon, Greenling, Blue/Black RockFish, Gopher/Black and Yellow RockFish, Kelp/Grass RockFish, Copper RockFish, Vermillion RockFish, Olive RockFish, China RockFish, TreeFish, Calico Bass, MonkeyFace Prickleback, California Halibut, Pacific Halibut, Perch (all kinds), Sheepshead, OpalEye, White SeaBass, Red Abalone, Rock Scallops, Dungeness Crab.
6.   Only fish that you can normally keep and eat (per CA DFG regulations) are eligible.
7.   The biggest fish/abalone/scallop from each diver's top ten categories will be used towards the diver’s total points.
8.   Entries must be posted within 2 weeks of being taken and photographed. No "hoarding" of entries.
9.   ALL DFG rules must be followed 100%. Period. Any breaking of any DFG rules will result in the entry being disqualified and public ridicule.
10. If you don't like the rules and don't want to play, don't! Diving is fun , and this is meant to be fun between friends as well. We all have bigger and better things to argue/stress/worry about.

AOTY is trying out a new point system where a "trophy" sized entry would be approx. 200 points...so this is what I propose for points for DOTY:

White SeaBass: 4 points/inch
GreenLing: 11 points/inch
Cabezon: 8 points/inch
Perch: 12.5  points/inch
Opaleye: 8 points/inch
California Halibut: 5 points/inch
Pacific Halbut: 4.25 points/inch
LingCod: 5 points/inch
MonkeyFace: 7.25 points/inch
Blue/Black RockFish: 8 points/inch
Gopher/Black and Yellow RockFish: 8 points/inch
Kelp/Grass RockFish: 8 points/inch
Copper RockFish: 8 points/inch
Vermillion RockFish: 8 points/inch
Olive RockFish: 8 points/inch
China RockFish: 8 points/inch
TreeFish: 8 points/inch
Calico Bass: 8 points/inch
Sheepshead: 7 points/inch
Red Abalone: 20 points/inch
Rock Scallop: 30 points/inch
Dungeness Crab: 25 points/inch

I think this can be a fun way for us divers to have a little friendly competition, and support the site at the same time.

I'll be doing this anyway, and keeping track of the biggest fish/abs/scallops I take next year anyway....

Lemme know if you are interested or have any suggestions.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

It's on!  :smt003

I like the rules, Jim. They should work well. I especially like the combination of blue/black, kelp/grass, gopher/blacknyellow. That way, there shouldn't be any misidentification.

Will opaleye count as perch? Or no opaleye?

I'll sign up sometime  before Jan 1, so I can get crackin' when the New Year rolls around.

Well, opaleye are technically not perch, but they are kind of perch-like in nature. Opaleye are a SoCal fish, but like sheephead and calicos, are found on the Monterey Peninsula in decent numbers (also Santa Cruz). I've never seen one in Carmel, but I've seen many on the other side of the pensinsula.

Your call.

I'm making this stuff up as I go....If they can be ID'd easily as different than "regular" perch than I don't see why not to have them as their own category.

Same points as regular Perch I am assuming? Will add on to the list.

Let me know if you guys have other ideas of how to make this cool.

I left off Sharks and WolfEels on purpose...not very common and wouldn't want to encourage people killing them just for this....plenty of other fish on the list to get points from.

I think opaleye, if added, should be less points per inch than perch, just because they get bigger than most of the perch. Maybe 8 points per inch.
