Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Hull Protection
« on: March 27, 2024, 04:35:02 PM »
This is gonna be controversial, but I'm considering riveting them to the hull.  I have some waterproof rivets - I'm thinking two along the front edge and one at the rear.  Silicon caulk or RVT sealant along the edges and at the rivets.

I enjoy drilling holes in my kayaks, but I'd never intentionally make a hole below the waterline. If nothing else, I'd think it would completely destroy any resale value.

Thanks for the info!

SFD looks super-simple. But, are we really supposed to use a descending device, even if fish are caught in relatively shallow water? I usually fish for for bigger game, and generally barbless. I've released vast numbers of RF bycatch, and it's always no-touch--just grab the hook and shake. It seems to me that a descending device will have a lot more chance of harming the fish than what I do, with no possible benefit, at least in shallow(ish) water.

What a scam!

Personally, unless I recognize the number, I let all calls go to voicemail. Most of them won't even bother to leave a message, and if they do, it's a lot easier to ignore, as you're not caught off guard.

If this guys fishes back east, don't go for striped bass, he will laugh at you.

Also, if they are from MD or VA, and you tell them that you are fishing for rockfish, they'll think that you are targeting stripers.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Guide - Metal 180 MD Sprocket Installation

Excellent info!

I've been thinking about putting the metal sprockets on my GT drives (no 180s for me). I'd be curious to know if you notice even a slight increase in noise from the metal-to-metal contact when pedaling on the water (I'm obsessed with silent pedaling).

General Talk / Re: Registering Kayak with DMV
« on: March 21, 2024, 06:58:59 PM »
By the way, the consensus here seems to be that if the DMV agent is trying to charge you for prior years and you can't convince them otherwise, walk out and make an appointment at a different DMV. There seems to be widespread confusion at DMV on this topic and you just have to get lucky to get the right person.

I have not registered a motorized kayak, but I did register a trailer that I built from a kit, and that caused a fair bit of confusion at the DMV. Based on my experience, I'd say that the advice above is exactly right--if you don't get an answer that makes sense, just leave and go to a different DMV (or even go back to the same DMV later), as a different person may give you a different answer.

Hopefully, someone can develop a fish identification app linked to the applicable regulations.
By taking a photo of a fish, it can tell species, size, (automatically capture GPS coordinate and date) and tell me if I can keep the fish or not and how many.

This would be a great project for one of my CS students, I'll try to pitch it and see if I can get any takers. It would be interesting to see how accurately fish can be ID'ed from pictures. I suspect there would be quite a few ambiguous cases, but at least the app could then tell you what to look for to distinguish between the possibilities...

Wanted To Buy / Re: Want to buy a kayak trailer

P.S. I hadn't thought about charging an EV with a trailer, but that would be a hassle (my wife drives a Tesla Model Y). I have my doubts that tire size is going to have a significant impact on mileage, though.

Wanted To Buy / Re: Want to buy a kayak trailer

... Trailerx model has a free upgrade in March to 12in tires which I'm trying to figure out if those are worthwhile.  My main concern is efficiency since I'm planning to tow with an EV and stopping to charge with a trailer seems a bit cumbersome.

My Trailex had the regular 8 inchers when I bought it, and last year I upgraded it myself to 12 inch. If you want the bigger wheels, it's probably best to buy it that way, as doing it myself was more of a hassle than I expected. Having said that, I'm not sure it's a big deal either way. Trailex used to insist that bigger wheels were of no value, and threatened to void the warranty if larger tires were used. I think they gave in simply due to customer demand, rather than because they were convinced that it is a good idea.

In any case, I've attached a picture with the 12" installed, and one of the original 8" next to it.

I don't have one to sell, but I'm a fan of my Trailex.

Actually I had one question, do you think it would work to store my Outback long term on the Trailerx SUT-220-S trailer in my garage? I'm worried about deforming my hull

Also looks like the trailerx is 125 pounds and the Malone ecolight is 145 pounds as well which is less of a difference than I expected, I wonder if there would actually be a noticeable difference towing

I store my AI on my trailer with DIY bunks made from 2" PVC electrical conduit. You could also use the official Hobie bunks, if you are worried about warranty issues, but I think the PVC probably provides better support.

I pull my trailer with a Subaru Crosstrek, and it's almost like it's not there, and I'm sure 20 lbs more for the Malone won't make any difference in that respect. I can also use the trailer like a dolly, as I can easily move it around by hand.

Hahaha, the Chinese sentence on picture is really fun :)

My wife translated it for me...
