so i have been paddling my thresher 155 for over a year now and i love it.  at the time i bought it, i opted for the model without the rudder.  i soon found out that  it seriously needs a rudder.  i regretted not getting the cool toe controlled (keepers) footbrace system, then i found out shortly after that that got recalled and was being replaced by the regular harmony footbrace rudder controls.

i have several options on my mind.  first being most desirble (to me, but you can reasonably talk me out of it)

1:  SeaLect foot brace system  with their Trucourse rudder.  i like the idea of the toe controls.  has anyone have any experience with this kit?  based on specs, footbraces are non-issue.  but concearn is the rudder mount.  threshers have a hole drilled in the hull and fittings for the rudder's rod, thus not requiring a bracket to be installed. (if you have a thresher, you will know what im talking about)  the sealect's Trucourse also uses a rod that goes vertical into your kayak and they do have dimensions on the rod (3"x3/8")  i do not have a harmony rudder, so hopefully somone with one can send me some measurements to see if itll work.  another question for thresher guys:  how does that rod stay in the hole? is there a pin or clip i should be worried about?

2: Sea Lect footbrace system with harmony rudder.  i can: a) purchase the rudder only from conf. if possible ill have to call them.  or b) the BTS rudder (the one with the graphics on it) looks to be a better performing one,  i doubt itll have the same rod dimensions as the standard harmony one, but i might wrong.

3: Just suck it up and purchase the harmony kit.  but for close to $300, i think i can do a bit better with option 1 or 2.   with possibility to upgrade foot brace system later on.

if anyone happen to have any of the above parts lying around i would be interested.

i know its just a rudder,  and it seems like im overthinking it, but that's just me.

When I installed the rudder that came with my thresher I had to turn it to one side to allign it in the hole. That allowed the rudder to go all the way down into the hole. When turned back to its normal operating position it can't be pulled out. I think you need to be sure first that any other rudder you are looking at has a shaft with the same shape so it can be installed correctly in the hole.

I just installed the Harmony rudder on my Predator XL. Having decided not to spend 400 on the official rudder , I decided touse my old rudder with alittle DIY modification in order to get it working. I will try it out this weekend to see how things worked out but expect it to work fine. I had to fabricate a plate in order to use the pre drill holes that didn't work with this rudder. I made sure to have it align up in the middle since I believe it is crucial in order to track correctly. Will find out how it works and update my findings.

I installed the Harmony rudder on my Thresher. It was pretty simple. The hardest part was the foot brace mountings back screws. It got a little tight getting my hands up there to put the gasket washer on and hold the nut in place.

I have a few extra parts from my kit you are welcome to.

You can also check out mine to see if what you are wanting to do will work.

I'm actually using the recalled Thresher style pedals on my Tarpon and they work just fine as far as I can tell. I actually have an extra pair if you really want them since the ones I got were from whatever WS tandem they came on.

I think the main problem with them was that they could easily put too much pressure on the handle you pull to adjust them and it could break it. In fact the pair that I ended up using had one of the adjustment handles snapped off which didn't matter much to me since my legs aren't prone to changing size.

I ended up pairing with a pretty solid rudder from china and making my own mount (which I need to re-do). I can provide details if you are interested.

Bob, my suggestion is to put the biggest rudder you can afford, it will help you down the road if you opt out for any option that will increase speed.

My Santa Cruz Raptor G2 has the Sealect Trucourse rudder, definitely thumbs up!  Just let me know if you want to look at it (or if you want to see a picture).

that's the answer i have been looking for. thanks.  looks like i will have to use the standard rudder because of the special notch on the rod/shaft

i totally agree, i couldn't even justify spending even 270 on the rudder kit.  it just doesn't make much sense for me for what it is.  but that looks like a good setup, but on the threshers, the shaft goes into the hull, so it would not need that bracket that you have pictured.

do you have a picture of the shaft itself?  i want to see if it can be moded for a different rudder.

thanks for the offer, but i dont want to use the recalled keepers setup because of the fact that it failed.  that is why i opted to use the sea lect. similar function but seems to be better engineered with a nut for tightening and/or very small adjustments.

first time i have seen that rudder was on the sc g2's like yours. that gave me the idea.  i like the function on it, as well as the covers on the wires.  it looks very well designed.   i know, i said i was minimalistic, so either rudder would work for me at this point.
