Behold a new subspecies of Pacific Grey Sole!!!!
First spotted at the entrance to the squid exhibit, nestled amongst the dusty, high traffic substrate. Its elongate body features a rounded and flared anterior having a tapering thickness and a dozen or so fenestrations. The blunt caudal portion is thickened and is characterized by a pinkish insert with cross hatching surface marks.
Guessing it would make horrible table fare, with a rubbery texture, poor digestibility, and foul odor.

No seriously, I'm at MBay Aq last weekend and come upon this - WTF? Someone done litrally walked out of they shoes!

Nah, that's obviously a soleus superfeetus, or common insole.
Normally found on land. You are correct in assuming it's inedible characteristics.
Usually available in men's and women's sizes, they are known to attach themselves(like a remora) to the bottom of socks, and are believed to exist on the odors and toe-jam their host produces.

There is apparently a species of freshwater soles. On a multi-day whitewater kayak trip in Mexico, a friend lost his wetsuit booties, but found a large supply of sandal and shoe soles in a pile of driftwood, and was able to manufacture some footgear with an un-matched pair of soles and some duct tape.
