Recipes / Salmon Poke!!
« on: May 10, 2019, 12:32:47 PM »
Disclaimer: Eating raw fish has risks. Most fish caught here in California can contain anisakis, a parasitic worm that can make you really sick. Freezing fish at home does not kill the parasites, the only way is to fully cook the fish. That being said I have never heard of anyone getting sick and thought it would be worth the risk to make some salmon poke.

Ingredients:
Salmon
Soy Sauce
Mirin
Rice Vinegar
Sesame Seeds
Brown Sugar
Green Onions
Ginger
Shallot
Onion
Sushi Rice
Mango
Avocado
Cucumber
Sake :smt002

Cook sushi rice in rice cooker per instructions on the bag. Once it's done, mix in rice vinegar and mirin, while fanning and gently tossing.

Skin and debone salmon fillet, cut into half-inch cubes. I saved the fatty belly meat for nigiri.

Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan.

Make the dressing by mixing soy sauce, grated ginger, mirin, brown sugar, and rice vinegar together. Adjust quantities until it tastes good.

Chop avocado and mango into cubes.

Chop the Cucumber, green onion, and shallot, into thin slices

Toss the salmon cubes with the dressing, sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top. Put everything in a bowl so that it looks nice.

Enjoy :)

After finishing a midterm today I decided to skip the rest of my classes and take the yak out for a bit of a shakedown run. I am still getting all my gear set up but I felt comfortable going out now that I have a radio, as long as it didn't get too foggy to keep the coast in view. I set out from the beach south of the Santa Cruz harbor with trolling for halibut in mind. I trolled around the mile buoy for about two hours and managed to pick up a decent brown rockfish, no skunk! No signs of halibut but I'm determined to try again once I get a GPS. On the way back in as I waited for a set to pass, I ended up getting too close to shore. A wave started breaking behind me, and after riding it for about a second the front of my yak hit the sand. Luckily I just got ejected onto my feet in waist-high water, but it was a good wake up call to learn to practice my surf landings more. All of my gear was stowed in the hull so I didn't lose anything besides my ego. All in all a good day on the water and I'm eager to get back out there and find some butts.

General Fishing Tips / spearfishing/ scuba diving wetsuit
« on: March 31, 2018, 10:07:28 AM »
I am just getting into scuba diving and I really want to try my hand at some freediving spearfishing. I am looking to get a wetsuit, and I was hoping to be able to get one that would serve double duty and that I could use for both freediving and scuba diving. I've seen some videos on youtube that said that freediving wetsuits tend to be thinner but fit tighter than standard scuba wetsuits and that scuba wetsuits tend to be thicker and easier to put on. I plan on diving mostly from Monterey to Mendocino.

Are there any brands/ what style of wetsuit should I look for? Is it possible to get a wetsuit that could work for both freediving and scuba?

TIA!!

Went out to Manresa state beach yesterday morning. Fished from 7 to 10 for zero. The surf was rough but not unfishable, and there was intermittent rain. I met another angler out there who had the same bad luck as I did. I fished gulp sandworms, sand crabs, kastmasters, and an xrap. I think the fish just weren't there, gonna have to go back soon to get some redemption.

I don't know about you guys, but I've been having some really good luck these past two weeks. It might just be because I have been fishing more than usual, but this nice weather definitely hasn't been hurting. I got limits of lingcod and rockfish last week on my friend's boat out of bodega bay, then caught some perch and a lingcod from some rocks on the Marin coast, and finally caught some perch today on a beach near Pt Reyes. While I hope it will rain soon, its been really nice having some flat calm seas.

I gotta get a kayak soon.

I went out today to Manresa state beach, only stayed two hours. I got there around noon, soon after high tide. The surf was pretty rough but not unfishable. I found one sandcrab the entire time I was there and didn't see any signs of fish. At least it was a nice day to be out on the water.

I'm planning on doing some surf fishing Wednesday the 13th leaving from Santa Cruz at around 11 am. Probably going to hit beaches south of Aptos.

General Fishing Tips / are west coast stripers hybrids??
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:30:50 PM »
I have seen many videos on youtube where anglers catch stripers with broken lines and say that they are "wipers" aka white bass striper hybrids. These videos are usually from east coast lakes and rivers. All of the stripers I have seen here on the west coast have these broken bars. Does anyone know if it is true that broken bars mean that they are hybrids? and if so does that mean we have hybrid bass here on the west coast?

Thanks!!

Introductions / Hey im Nico in Santa Cruz
« on: April 27, 2017, 02:51:51 PM »
Hey! I made an account a while ago and now want to get more involved here. I moved to Santa Cruz last fall for school, and I have done some shore fishing here with limited success. My dream is to someday get a Hobie pro angler, but for now I am stuck fishing the beaches and the rocks. If anyone has any advice for fishing the Santa Cruz area I would love to hear it!

Thanks!

Nico
