I'll have Verna contact those who already booked, if there is any availability at the Tides Inn, I'll post up.
Those who stayed here last year have first priority.

campground website is down.  Called and I'm in spot 12, near the BIG tree.  I don't have a map, but I got a general idea where that is.  I'm usually in 7 but someone poached it from me again.  When that happens I take 6 but this year a maintenance guy is staying there, so 12 it is!
I was told 7 through 13 are now reserved.
Anyone got a link to a campground map, let me know and I'll start adding names to it and post it up here so we all know where to find each other.

I haven’t hammered out all of the details yet but there will probably be oysters in some fashion. Prepayment and a pick-up time certain will probably be part of the plan. I’ll post when I get the details hammered out.

So check this out.  I'm on the board of Humboldt Area Saltwater Anglers - HASA.  I'm actually right near the end of a 2 year term and am trying to hook them up with another kayaker to take a board position.  Doug?  I think you'd be great in the role.

Anyway, last night we had a board meeting, and a big part of what we hear about throughout the year is about seasons - Pacific halibut, salmon, lingcod and rockfish...

Last night we got updates that included this potentially big one:  lingcod below the 40-10 line is likely to go to 1 per angler.  Not sure if that means this year or next, but something to think about.

Salmon is the update that I most anticipate.  So far the word on the street has good jack returns, so this year's season sounds promising.  Hopefully the Cove will have an early April opening again and will have a relatively full season with two Chinook per day, minimum 20".  We'll know more in the coming weeks, and I'll update this thread as it gets going.

The 40-10 line is a very important line in fisheries management.  It is simply 40 degrees 10 minutes North latitude, which lies about 5 miles north of Shelter Cove.

Great question, Jim.  It's at Horse Mountain, which is just a couple miles north of Shelter Cove.  The 1 lingcod limit would, I believe, affect all ports from Shelter Cove south.

Got it.

Will be interesting to see if that becomes reality.

I personally would be fine with it...3 seemed excessive to me, 2 is plenty, 1 would prolly make me be more selective...

I imagine for a lot of folks though they may take more RF if can only take 1 Ling...which seems kinda the opposite of what they have been trying to achieve over the past couple years...but I really have no clue.

Jim

I would be interested in hearing the thought process behind a one ling limit. I can't speak for the rest of the coast, but, here in the Cove, most anglers will catch 30-50 ling's for every limit of assorted R.F.
That sounds like either the ling population needs culling, or the R.F. population is in need of help.
Personally, I'm just glad to fish the few days I can lol!!!
Also happy to have Cali-Hali season remain the same.

It would suck if they imposed 1 ling limit. There are abundance at SC that require culling to help maintain the RF population and motivate Asian like myself to fish further  :smt044. I think in my opinion, they should implement tags on lings like they did on stripers before. For example the limit is 2 and if you purchase a tag, that will allow you to keep 3. Its better since not all wanted more than and some like myself can take that tag opportunity, Since the did a 3 limit 2 season ago to cull and help RF population. Its a win win, dfg gets extra fundings for those tags and at the same time help culling over populated lings that affects RF statistics.

Post by: Dogwood on January 17, 2018, 03:00:36 PM
Thanks for the information. When the limit was 3 Lingcod it did seem a little excessive. I would have no problem reducing the limit to 1. All it would mean is that people (me) would be more selective.

Gyppo Ale Mill located just behind the Campground
And YES, there is agate for your convince.
Just stopped in for a few samples and I think a few of you will be pleased, I was glad to see Ale's, Pilsner's, and Lauger's all brewed on the premises as well as Root beer for those who don't partake.
And the good news ......

Right on, Ryan - someone will hook you up.

These are good guys - really appreciate someone taking them on.

...and can we get this thread going a little?!

I've got just over a dozen people signed up, and I'm limiting the event to about 200.  :smt005

Seriously though.  It's somewhat problematic to be preparing for a big event and have limited indicators that it's even going to happen.   I get that there are lots more events now than there used to be, and people tend to sign up later.  I've also been trying to honor those who have expressed that the event has grown too large, but I'm having second thoughts about not promoting - it's too hard to live that when the reality is that I look very forward to making this thing as good as it can be for whoever wants to participate.

If you're coming to GS I appreciate you getting on the printer and sending it in.  Thx  :smt001

If you promote less, would you not risk lower attendance than hoped for? You can promote as normal with the participation cap. I remember last year that you were worried about the low number of sign-ups. Then the flood of last-minute sign-ups...what if the last-minute flood does not happen if people are not reminded to sign up?

Met with my good friend Brandi recently, and we hashed out some details for this year's Gyotaku.  Her efforts and the help of her team of volunteers each year has made the fish printing a really special part of Gimme Shelter - thank you so much, Brandi, for your continued dedication to the Gimme Shelter Gyotaku Extravaganza!  :smt001

Here's the plan:

I've always wanted to be a part of the Gyotaku, but scoring and prepping for the potluck have limited me to just a couple of quick visits to the Gyo over the years.  Scoring has actually become more and more manageable with the refining of the system and the fact that only about 25% of participants turn in fish, so it's time for a change.  This year I'm moving the scoring up to the campground to be right next to the fish printing!  I've spoken to Jack Sanford (campground owner) about this, and he's all about it, so it's basically a done deal.

Kids print for free, and there are shirts and all the printing materials available to adults who wish to participate.  This is a really cool family event.  At the potluck we'll ask all the kids to come up in their prints, and each kid will get a prize.

- I think we agreed on a cut-off age for kids - if you're 16 you need a fishing license, and you can't print for free!
- Must bring your own fish and take it with you!
- Kids must have an adult accompanying them in order to participate.
- No smoking.

So stoked to make this move that will allow me to more fully experience, enjoy and learn from the Gyotaku along with the turning in of fish at the scoring check-in.  This gig is evolving, and that growth and change comes from ideals and observations made about the world around us.  The fish, the kelp, the abs, the salmon and everything in the web of life here are changing - things are doing what I used to wonder about when I'd consider that my grandparents could harvest 10 abs apiece back in the day, or that it's been just over 20 years now that you could keep a salmon or steelhead in the Eel.  Things change - generally, wildlife declines.  I want this event to always be about the respect we have for our environment and the amazing resources living on the landscape, and that means that the event is also about how we appreciate, preserve and work to restore these things that are so precious to us.  Bringing the kids in to the mix and having them do hands-on art with the wildlife that we idolize is absolutely in line with how I want things to go.  Thanks for participating.  :smt001

I have plenty of Freshwater hear I don't need anymore. Was thinking of having a gear swap/sale here at the Tides Inn on Friday.
If you have gear to swap/sale, bring a table or tarp and display your goods in a organized Fashon.

None of the current proposed salmon alternatives has salmon fishing open in May.  That doesn't seem likely to change from what I am hearing.  Sacramento River is the confining stock.  We will most likely get a KMZ season though.

You are welcome Eric!  Honestly, this event does not happen with out amazing volunteers to help run the event - and if you always wanted to be part of the Gyotaku Team, please let me know! And it doesn't happen without people of all ages participating. I will be posting more information specific to the 7th Annual Gyotaku Extravaganza! in a separate thread soon.

Looking forward to seeing another year of great fish printing art!!

:smt001

None of the current proposed salmon alternatives has salmon fishing open in May.  That doesn't seem likely to change from what I am hearing.  Sacramento River is the confining stock.  We will most likely get a KMZ season though.

Isn't that just for the Eureka area, Doug?

Hats are in.

The standard that's on the registration form is a black hat with blue sapphire thread.  I also got some navy hats with black thread done.  I used the same high quality Richardson PTS20 that I've used the past 2 years.

Until I made GS hats a couple years ago I was never much of a hat person.  Now I wear them all the time.

No, it's pretty well everywhere except monterey.  We will also probably have an in-season action for an April closure, again everywhere except monterey.

Well, we won't be fishing for salmon at GS12.  It's a bummer, but it's reality.

The good news:  sounds like Pacific halibut will be open for the event, and we're due to catch a few!

Pacific halibut ... That will make things interesting... what kind of gear do you use, how heavy of line do you recommend ?
I am still going, unless the road washes away...

The thought crossed my mind...  You know though - for sure - that Rob Bray's going to come on this thread and try to blow up any kind of halibut seminar I put on!  :smt005

I appreciate it, Jerry, but I'll just offer this instead:

- the Pacific halibut that have been caught at the Cove during GS event weekends in the past have mostly been on swimbaits within a half mile of the Whistle.

- you don't necessarily need gear that's any different than stout rockfish/lingcod stuff, but being ready with a large net or gaff(s) is very important.

- most of the dozen or so Pac hali's hooked, fought and/or landed during GS event weekends were not targeted - one of them definitely was, and it won Terry his first GS title.

- from GS3 to GS6 or GS7 there was at least one and sometimes a few Pac hali caught by our group sometime during the event weekend, so I started thinking that having that many hooks in the water is the ticket and that we'd basically always be seeing a few.  We haven't seen a Pac hali since...  During those years we NEVER caught a California halibut during the GS event weekends, and they weren't common the rest of the year either.  Then a few years back Tyja Taube caught a Cali during GS9 maybe, and since then we've caught some each year, with last year producing quite a few.  So there's never been a year when we've caught both Pacific and California during the tourney weekend.

Someone will hook a Pacific again soon.  :smt001

Interestingly, no one has caught a California halibut on tournament day other than Tyja's, and he wasn't signed up that year.

One halibut and one lingcod, regardless of size, wins over two lings even if they're both 40 inchers.

Working on some tens and other abs for GS - it's different this year for sure. I'm still tripping on the apparent loss of the abalone tradition as many of us have always known it.

When you stop and think about how the world would be without these special animals - or starfish too - it makes you realize how lucky we are to have awesome wildlife around us. It's almost like a Dr. Seuss kind of reality - super sea snails with beautiful shells as large as helmets, star shaped predators that keep the spiny urchins in check... These creatures enrich our lives, and if it must be the case that we can no longer capture and eat them, I will always continue to appreciate that they exist in this world.

When I give away the abs I hope that the message of conservation and appreciation goes with them.

Eric,
I agree with you on what a majestic creature the Abalone is.
I have the shell you presented me with at GS11 last year with other 10"ers that I have dove up myself.
I really wanted to do a dive with you but events kept me from it.
Last season only took 7 abs but did manage to get a ten as well as winning the $100 at Albion with a big 9-7/8".
I have my reservations for campsites for GS12 and will get my registration to you soon.
Thank you for all that you do for this sport and look forward to a urchin clean up dive on Sunday.

Hey Eric my dad and I were curious about the safety of the road. There has been some pics posted recently and some discussions of how bad the road is past the general store. The picture shows massive undermining going on from a large slide. Is it safe to have that many people traveling over it with potentially 15,000 lbs plus, of trucks trailers and gear ? We want to come just are hesitant after seeing how bad it is. Thanks Eric

Road looks bad, but, like Doug said, there are alternate routes.  Lots of people drive over it every day, and the County is planning the fix.  I don't think it's an issue at all for GS.

Don't forget,
Just over four weeks to get your registration in.
I'm sure it would be very helpful to Eric if those registration forms in early. I know what a pain it is to have to deal with a mad rush of last minute entries. Get them in ASAP!!!
Also,
Verna just took on a new luxury rental home (3 bedrooms with a loft. As this is a new rental market, she is offering a special deal for this event. Perfect for a family or 1-3 couples.
For info on this house, call Verna at (707)986-7900
And don't forget .... Get your registration in.
See you in May

I have plenty of Freshwater hear I don't need anymore. Was thinking of having a gear swap/sale here at the Tides Inn on Friday.
If you have gear to swap/sale, bring a table or tarp and display your goods in a organized Fashon.
Let me know if interested and any thoughts.
Might even break out the BBQ

I damn sure miss that place

Really sorry to hear that, Rich.  Kick it's ass, bro.

My offer still stands - if Cody wants to come up I'll take him out with me and look after him.

You got this, man.  :smt001

Finally got the registration mailed today.  Been in my car for a week, but I just haven't left the house since Easter!
I am so needing this trip to get away and just hang out with the best people I've ever met!

Anyone have a tandem adventure island? Due to physical issues my brother can't fish at all while he's here unless it's on a boat. I was thinking with a tandem island I could take him out with me. Don't need the full setup, just one outrigger is fine... If you're willing to bring it (I can tow it with me too if you're local to the Bay Area) and let us use it for a day or two that'd be awesome.

Or if you have a spot on a boat for him that would be awesome too.

Unfortunately, I am not gonna be able to make it this year. I started a new job 6 months ago and it is hard for me to get time off. I need to save my time off for a family vacation to Hawaii later in the summer. It really bums me out that I can't be there. This is my favorite event every year. Next year ill just have to stay twice as long ,fish twice as much and party twice as hard.

Just bought new camping trailer wanting to bring it to shelter cove
this year
But the price they want to camp there is B.S.
$52 for 2 people
Plus $26 per person after that
Crazy
As much people that come, they should give a break not raise it
Mario’s hotel goes up $50 per night for that event
Sorry for negativity

If it’s just a single fisherman he would pay $26 a night which isn’t too bad. If you bring family, the per person rate can get out of control. I think they charge different rates if you can reserve an RV site.

That is why we rent a house. $25-30/night for the house per person. Much more comfy and I can walk to the campground in 5 mins to hang out.

There's like 70 people staying at the house for that price, and worse of all, one of them is bmb. But this year, Rob offered a 20% discount to let him stay, so I guess it's a good deal.

Registration closes in a few days, and once I have the final roster I'll post it up so people can verify their reg and their gear order.  At that time we can also move on to discussions of potluck, group activities...etc.

There is a planned detour on May 14, don't be surprised if you get detoured on other days, for work on the section below the general store that has slipped.  I think photos were posted here before of the slip.

http://kymkemp.com/2018/04/19/shelter-cove-road-closed-may-14/

You won't have to go too far out of the way, just go slow and be kind to the locals, the detour is on residential streets.

Howard and others that might have a difficult time navigating Shelter Cove Rd.
After you leave the town of Redway, be sure to follow the yellow center line, it goes all the way to the cove.
If you come to a fork in the road, Follow the Yellow Center Line it goes all the way to the cove.
If you think you should turn at a intersection, FOLLOW THE YELLOW CENTER LINE, IT GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE COVE!
So,
Just to recap,
Once on Shelter Cove Rd. In Redway,
FOLLOW THE YELLOW CENTER LINE, IT GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE COVE!
See You In a Few Weeks.

There is more than one paved way around the road that will be under construction

Construction is not scheduled to begun until 2019.
In the meantime, signs are in place if a detour is needed before construction beguins.
Also,
The road will be closed on May 14th for crews to survey the slide and assess repair strategy. This will be only the 14th, and the road will open again on May 15th.
If you are planning to come on the 14th, the detour will only add three minutes.
See you in a few weeks.

Down 20% off the average the past 4 years of 200.  By design.  I've loved the event with 200 participants and their family and friends, but I have gotten feedback over the past few years that people liked it a little more cozy.  My way of honoring that was to make it just a little less easy and clear about how to participate.  It's not about wanting to not include anyone - it's about trying to make it so that those who are coming are those who really want to be a part of it.  I am very happy with the group of people on the list.  :smt001

I just never realized how BIG this was is all.
One of the nice things about GS is that it just feels like a family reunion.  Smaller groups form and reform as the day and weekend wears on.  I may not remember everyone's name, but it always seems like they remember mine.  And that feels great.  From the moment I pull in, I can barely get my truck turned off and someone is there to greet me and hand me a beer.  Such a relaxing time.

Just put my order in for several thousand dollars worth of shirts and hoodies...  Looking forward to stuffing the bags in a couple weeks and tying up some loose ends in the meantime.

Will have a more complete raffle list soon, and if someone wants to start a potluck thread that would be great.  It'll be different without the taco shack - extra cobbler I guess!  :smt003

Let's do a dive if conditions allow.  I'm skeptical of wholesale clearing of urchins.  I agree they're having a bad effect, but I hate to wipe them out of an area - they actually stop drifting kelp, so abalone around them can grab that food too.  I'll be looking to clear concentrated urchins from around abalone, but not all of them.

We will all learn more as time goes by regarding the best way to try to 'fix' nature, IMO.

Getting calm water with clarity of more than about 2 to 3 feet will be the key - it's iffy.

Please educate me about "they actually stop drifting kelp". I thought they destroy the holdfast thus cause the kelp to uproot and drift away.

If there are too many urchins they eat all the kelp - from top to bottom of the plant.  When there are less urchins they serve a function as something that can stop drifting kelp - then neighboring animals like abalone can lift up and grab some to eat.

Did some time at the Cove this week.  Fishing wasn't red hot, but it was typical for the nearshore Cove - 9 lingcod and half a dozen blacks in a few hours trying.

Some Pacific halibut have been caught within a couple miles of the Whistle by the powerboaters.

There has been no talk of a BBQ this year that I know of.
But, we do have Mi Mochima (Venezuelan Food) and Gyppo (brewery and Cafe). As these are new and the Cove has been waiting for good food, I would suggest making reservations ahead.

Here's how I see it:

Wednesday - Could be world class all day long - get on it if you can.

Thursday - Still good but wind coming.

Friday - Good early, could degrade later.

Saturday - Get it early because noon to 6PM may be a shit show of whitecaps.  Trying to be honest about my assessment of an early forecast, and it could well be beautiful all day.

Either way, we're about to blow this shit up for GS12 at one of the most amazing spots on the planet!   Hell yeah!!!  Who's pumped?  :smt001

Things are adjusting to become much like what Stormsurf predicted a few days ago.  Mornings should be good.

Probably not, Ariel. What I heard is there were complaints about late arrivals making noise. Looks like they setting up an adjacent area for late arrivals. But I don't they are taking into account the number of RVs/trailers that arrive at night. Probably also have to park outside for the night also.

Can anyone in the cove confirm what is going on with this?  Locking us in/out ?  That’s not ok with me.

I don't think they're making any rash decisions over at the campground.  Probably just asserting their right to close the gate at night.  I've always felt fortunate that the gate keeper wasn't on my ass for going in and out delivering t-shirts all these years - I doubt there will be any problems.

I just left the camp ground and the gate still open.  I think they try to avoid the issues with very late comers like: noise, occupied wrong spot due to darkness, no one there for register, etc...I don’t think it’s strictly enforced.

Maybe a little sensitive after kayaks got blocked off of the launch at Trinidad and a group is forming to shut down stock car races at redwood acres. Fight the man. See you in the cove, headed out this mornIng.

I spoke to Jack this morning - no problem with our group arriving late and getting in the gate.  He's just trying to get a handle on other late night arrivals (non GS) that tend to occupy the wrong spots, run over plumbing, bug other campers...etc. - so don't be like a non GS'er!  :smt001

Looks like 10 to 15% of the tourney field is out there for Thursday pre-fish.  Water's a little bumpy, but basically flat with very light breeze just starting to puff.

Claire and I are off to do schwag distribution soon.  Cove days...   :smt007

I had a great time this year. I totally expected the wind to be a problem but it couldn’t have been nicer. Someone said it’s a long way to drive for one day of fishing, but I think it’s worth it for a day of Gimme Shelter. Beautiful location, great people, fantastic fishing, NCKA potluck and perfect conditions. I didn’t catch anything big but I did catch them often. I released a lot of lings and blacks on the small side but kept 3 decent blacks and 2 keeper lings. Thanks to everyone for putting on another epic event.  :smt006

GS is all about our stories and here's mine;
Got there early evening Thursday, and, as usual, I can't get set up with my neighbors all offering me up hellos, hugs and beers.  Later I found Eric and we collaborated on the meet time in the morning for his Halibut Clinic.  My fishing partner and I then got our gear ready and off to bed.  Friday morning we met Eric and the other clinic sign-ups and we got a great on-shore tutorial and details we were sworn to keep secret.  Ha!  On the water and Eric is coaching, encouraging and correcting his charges.  Out past Red Buoy and I hook into a Salmon.  My first in a Kayak.  It didn't get any closer than to tell it was bright chrome like a bumper!  Then Eric takes on to some more top secret honey holes, trenches and such that are known to produce the PacHali's and he cuts us loose to enjoy the rest of the day.  With 2 hours left, I caught and released 9 lings and kept two more.  A few blacks too.  Tournament morning, me and my 2 partners are on the water at first light and are off.  Past the splash rock and head out to sea between green and red cans.  Not quite to the imaginary line where we would cross green/red cans, we start to fish.  Within 20 minutes I've caught and released 2 legal lings, 25 and 27 inches and land a 30 inch salmon.  Measured, admired and released, we continue to paddle out past the green/red cans maybe another 1/2 mile or so until we hit 100+ ft of water, trolling and catching lings, rocks and cabs along the way.  Nearly out there and Bob is on the radio with a Hali that has him wondering how to get the damn thing in his kayak.  A dozen of us rush over and I get there just as he's got it across his lap, head and tail hanging over the sides.  He's beaned it with a 'fish-be-good', gilled it, got in on a hoop and the thing all of a sudden is possessed like the gal in The Exorcist, vodoing off the clip, off his lap and in the water, heading straight down as if he was perfectly fine.  I'm sure Bob has a great story so enough of that.  Inspired by his catch, we head back out to 100+' of water Eric taught us to seek and... I'm out of frozen bait!  I have one molested anchovy that I replaced after a Black chewed on it a little.  No head.  I rig that on my slip/mooch rig and wrap it 4 or 5 times to keep all the chucks together so it looks sorta like bait.  No head but gill collar is just stiff enough to hold the front hook so down it goes.  We head into the current at a little over 1mph troll.  I slow down enough that I'm in fact back trolling the current, using a 4oz banana weight, 48" of leader and a slightly chewed headless anchovy on a 4/0 slip rig.  After maybe 10 minutes, I get a hit.  Then a snag.  Then a head shake.  The power of the head shake from over 100' of line is impressive so I shout out to John, my closest partner, that I think I got something big.  He peddles over and has that look like it's just a snag, asshole, when there's another head shake.  John says, yea, you got something big alright.  I'm on my salmon pole with an ambassador 6500c reel, 30lb braid that is depth colored and 20' of 20 lb nylon top line.  I tighten up the drag a little and tug harder.  Then the big thing on the other end takes off.  ZING!  Colors flying off the reel; yellow, orange, blue.  Each representing 10' of line.  I slowly increase the drag until I'm scared the top line or slip rig will break.  It's enough to slow down the fish and it feels like it's setting on the bottom with about 150' of line now out.  I'm pulling, my pole is bent in a big U shape and it's not budging.  All the pulling and I'm slowly moving me and the kayak toward him.  With the blue braid now recovered, 10', this fish decides bull shit and peels off another 20.  I work hard to get this back and he takes 10'.  Over and over 20', 10, 10, 20 and it's back and forth until I'm back at the point of line where I started when he took the bait.  John is watching and figures it's a Hali alright and I'm not willing to jinx it to really say just yet.  Everything is exactly how Eric described it in his clinic though, so I figure maybe it'a a PacHali.  Slowly I am able to get this thing off the bottom and start working it up, but not without some more give/take of 10 to 20 feet at a time.  At my last color, blue, before the leader, I can see him; a big white slab, 30' down.  The water is very clear way out here. I'm slowing pumping him up, but he's heavy even as dead weight in the water.  Just rippling it's fins.   I'm at the top line now and John and I make a plan; no one else in sight, let alone close enough to help, we decide his gaff is bigger than mine so He hands his across, then clears his hoop stringer of his fish to make room for this one.  I've got the pole shoved behind me and my hand on the leader, hauling him up with that and just inches under water now.  I sit there looking at this thing wondering how the hell I'm to get this thing in my PA14.  It's so huge!  It's like someone opened up a white umbrella under water.  John says he's heard to gaff in it's middle to stun it.  I swung hard and hit the water, but the water resistance causes the hook to rotate just enough that it only rakes the Halibut's white belly.  This fish EXPLODES!  I'm stunned, knocked back into my seat and grab the pole.  But, he's had enough and is gone.  Nothing broke, it shot straight up at me and the slack caused both hooks I had seen in his mouth to release.
Most would be upset to loose a fish of this size.  I'm just so ecstatic to have this thing this close to just stare at for a few minutes,  with it on my line, at my boat.  Eric warned me at the clinic it would be a miracle to land a decent sized PacHali without a net other than the Ling-sized one I had, so I was ready for the disappointment.   But I wasn't disappointed.  This was the greatest fishing I've ever had.  John tells me how sorry he is, but I am just so happy to have had this experience, I tell him I'm not sorry he need not be either.
Best fishing day ever; Ended up with 2 larger lings after releasing at least 8 or 9 others, A limit of large blacks, a copper (first for me), landing my first salmon after hooking my first salmon the day before and poking a Pac Hali that was the biggest fish I've ever reeled in.
It was good trip!
Thanks Eric, for the clinics; 2 years ago for salmon and this year for Halibut.  Thanks for putting on the event.  I feel blessed!
Thanks for all the friends, conversations, sharing, food, laughs.

Looks like the weather gods were merciful. Down here it was blowin'! Glad it worked out up there. I missed a good time I know. Too much going on at home for me this time. Congrats to Matt. Not real surprised about that. Boyz got skillz. I'm loving the pac hali reports. Next flat spot in the weather after June 1st,  I'm heading up for a shot at em. A big bucket list item yet to be checked for me. Sounds like some chrome is in the area too. Loving it! The harpoon will be on board...

Hey everybody, thank you so much for all the props, this fish is a textbook version of "One more drop, then I'll head in". I launched with the intent of targeting Halibut just about all day being fairly certain I would catch enough lingcod as bycatch so get a couple keepers to turn in. I headed south of the whistle and started slow trolling large Herring on the bottom while letting the current take me farther south. I caught nearly 20 lings and a few rockfish while doing this and was at my turn around spot about 4 miles from launch south and to the west of Tolo Banks. I just kept my bait on the bottom and cruised about 1.2 mph for about 2 hours until I caught a 26" ling and decided to keep it since I only had 1 Herring left, honestly I felt defeated. It was about 12:00 at this point and I'm 2 miles out with only 1 bait, not looking good. So I drop down my last beautiful Herring and start trolling again, about 5 minutes later my rod loads up big time and I immediately feel a huge violent headshake, I knew what it was as I have felt this kind of power once before. Just keep the drag loose and start cranking, letting him run easily every time he wants too. By the time I knew he was coming up and it was time to say hello to one another in person instead of our long distance relationship I made sure I had everything ready, net in lap, game clip open and secured, some rope, my knife in my mouth, and rage in my mind. They come up vertical so all you see is a huge mouth and a body sticking straight down so you have to plane them out flat to net them head first, by slowly letting the wind drag me backwards I waited and pulled him toward me and shot the net straight under him and he went absolutely ape shit when he felt the net. Luckily I was able to hold on and lean way over the opposite side to counter balance this new addition to the kayak. Usually they will stop after a few seconds but he kept on going and going which made me stab him in the head quite a few times resulting in lots of blood loss and he was relatively done moving for a bit. The problem with nets is they get their teeth stuck in the net and it makes it extremely difficult to secure them, I game clipped him through the net and also put lip grippers on him to slide him in between my legs where I could more confidently get him out of the net and shoved his head under my seat to kind of wedge him stuck. After all the securing and having no doubts I was getting him to shore I announced what I had on the radio, finding out I had to peddle faster than I have ever done before to get to shore by 1:30.  Shelter Cove is an amazing special place and I try to get there every chance I get because you honestly never know what's in store for you. Thanks for all the hard work in getting this event going Eric, this is sure one I won't soon forget.

Pac Hali:
As Matt mentioned, it wasnt his first rodeo. props and congrats on securing the fish. Ive got a lot of homework to do. And by rodeo, he meant that literally.

Friday was a great day i wanted to do as much fishing as i could to take advantage of the nice weather because it could change on tourney day. A pair lings, a black limit, and mixed cabby and rf haul. sometime during the day i decided to troll a 8oz ultra minnow with a hoochie that i made. i was tired of jigging, so i decided to troll instead. dropped it to the bottom and gave the reel a couple cranks and was on my way. hooked on to something that felt quite familiar, but surprising at the same time. after a few pulls, it decided to give up and show itself. saw some silver and was thinking striper, but when it got to the boat, it showed it's chrome. Salmon! broke loose next to the boat. was happy anyway since it was just bycatch.

Saturday, tourney day, woke up super refreshed and excited to fish. launched into a lake. the weatherman was wrong! i knew i was going to fish hard today! took the same route as i did the previous day, hooked a few rockfish and released a few lings because i wanted lingzilla instead. had a mixed bag of 5 species of rf including black, blue, china, gopher, vermillion. they all sat on the deck. drift started to pick up and i decided im going to take a break from jigging and set up the hali rig that consisted of 50lb braid, carolina rig, 8oz sliding sinker, 48" of 40lb floro leader, with twin 6/0 hooks neatly stabbed onto a small herring. i figured if i drift it, i'd catch lingzilla if not the hali. Drift was going south east, landed on a big reef and fondled with a few bycatch rf/ling and as i drifted out of the reef, cranked up the rig to about 6ft from the bottom, set it in my rod holder so i can clip all the rockfish that were on my deck. thats the moment my rod loaded up, looked like a snag, but wasnt, i grabbed it and it took off like ive never felt! loosened the drag a bit and that's when i realized it was something big. but i wasnt sure what. the headshakes were huge throbs instead of quick vibrations like ive felt on cali halis, i was like WTF. so i radioed my fishing partner Murakami because i might need help, but he was too far away after delivering a bilge pump that someone has lost. i slowly reeled it in and after about 4 dives it showed color. The water was so clear, it was very easy to make out what it was. i could see the diamond shape body and the ugly face that only a mother could love. at that time, i knew shit was about to get real! thats when i switched from "possibly" needing help, to "for sure" needing help, but no one was nearby. everyone heard my voice on the radio and knew it wasn't bullshit. i realized how excited everyone on the radio was, maybe more than me, cus at the time i was actually more scared, not going to lie. based on what i see/hear, this is a crazy species, and i spent most of my life playing around with fish including giant arapaima, but this thing is just a beast! so a guy with a red tarpon kayak was the first to the scene to help, i am so sorry i forgot your name whoever you are, and first thought was to double gaff but wasn't sure, started to get a lot of chatter on the radio and mixed advice, so i tried to do what i thought was ok. i had the fellow kayaker hold on to my kayak so i wouldn't tip over, i opened my gameclip, gaffed the beast in the cheek, meat was ripping, so i quickly clipped it. after that, it got the wooden shampoo treatment about 30 times. it did not move. i cut its gills, it did not move. i took a couple breaths, and pulled it onto my lap. it did not move.... that's when i "thought" i had the cat in the bag, head hanging off the left side and much of the tail still in the water on the right side. mustve been over 48" long and 40+lbs. Radioed the crew! "I got him I got him!" about a minute later, as i was brainstorming my mission to secure him and bring him back to shore, thats when the thing gave me a lap dance got back in the water, stretched the gameclip out, pop! and he was gone. silence followed and the dozen kayaks next to me slowly drifted away. i sat there face down for about 5 minutes. Collected myself, and faced reality. paddled back in and tried to fish a bit more, pulled the crab pots and called it a day. when i got to shore, i felt like i was famous, hella people gave me hugs. didnt let it bother me, and went ahead with the rest of the day. the lost halibut didn't really hit me until today, when i was driving around, just thinking about what i did wrong. but there will always be a next time, and next time i will be more prepared! felt bad i killed the fish though. but it happens i guess.

overall great trip as always, with great conditions this time. its always fun at the cove, seeing new faces, as well as familiar ones. thank you so much Eric and and those who help to make this event possible.

They are definitely illegal.   :smt001

Question: Pacific halibut have become a sought-after sport fish out of Eureka and Trinidad. I have a question about landing large Pacific halibut, particularly in a relatively small boat. Many people use a type of harpoon with a head that comes off and is tethered to the boat. This prevents the fish from heading down while a rope is run through its gills for hauling it aboard. I was told that harpooning them this way was possibly illegal under rules governing harpooning fish. In this case the fish was caught with normal hook and line. The harpoon is used only to land the fish safely, similar to a gaff but more secure. Is this legal? Are there better methods? I have heard many tales of big halibut doing serious damage to fishermen if they are brought aboard too early and without steps taken to control them. All ideas are welcome. (Tom P., Eureka)

Answer: Harpoons cannot be used to “take” halibut, and landing the fish is an integral part of “take.” So just because you get the fish to the surface, it does not mean it has been “taken” until it is landed (secured). Most fish are lost at the surface, so take has not been completed and a harpoon could not be used at this point. Harpoons are only allowed for the actual take of all varieties of skates, rays, and sharks, except white sharks (California Code of Regulations Title 14, section 28.95).

While the use of a harpoon to “take” halibut is not authorized, the use of a “spear” to take halibut is legal, but you have to be “a person floating or swimming in the water” (CCR Title 14, section 28.90). Use of a gaff, including a gaff with a detachable hook, is authorized to land the fish as long as it is legal size. So the best option and the only one that is legal for California is to use a gaff with a detachable hook, sometimes referred to as a flying gaff. The description of a gaff can be found in CCR Title 14 section, 28.65 (d).

Also "integral part of take" is made up BS that appears exactly nowhere in any regulation or fish and game code.

Post by: jonesz on May 21, 2018, 08:53:21 PM
The regs changed on harpoons a couple years ago. California finally caught up and allowed them to assist landing a legally hooked fish. Here's a copy of the reg.

Methods of Take: When angling, no more than one line with two hooks attached may be used. A harpoon, gaff, or net may be used to assist in taking a Pacific halibut that has been legally caught by angling. See California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 28.95, for additional restrictions on the use of harpoons. Take by spearfishing is allowed pursuant to California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 28.90.

I for one am looking forward to doing battle with one of those beasts!! I have thought it out and feel well prepared to do battle. I've made a harpoon, a looped cable leash with heavy duty stainless steel clip to tether  him to the yak and a hatchet to clobber him with. A few years ago I helped land a beast and learned many lessons from the experience.
1) most small gaffs we carry are pretty futile against them.
2) a lead filled pipe is not enough to cave in his skull. Mine bounced off and hurt my hand every time I took a swing with it. Now I carry a hatchet.
3) a good sized harpoon with a buoy attached to a rope to tire him and haul him in with.
4) A rope with oversized hook to hog tie him with.
Now I just gotta get the hookup... :smt004

Thank you so much Eric!!!  It was good to be back up there to fish and see all the folks. The format had changed sine #6 so it was much easier to concentrate on what to do. I first caught a 29in ling and put it on the clip. Then I caught my PB vermillion at 22.75 inches. Various rockfish and smaller cabs and well over 25 lings until I caught a 32 inch ling. What to do? After pondering for a second I decided to keep the 32, fish for a bigger rockfish or a big cab fir one hour then paddle out to where they had hooked up on pac Hali’s by the red can. Some more smaller fish then I caught the biggest ling I’ve ever caught. Never measured it. Allen came over and took a couple of shots then she went back down. I knew then I had made the wrong decision on retaining the 32. Lol. Time was running short by that point so I stayed on the hunt for the winning side bet fish. The verm was close to 7 lbs but not enough. It was so good to see everybody and not be working my ass off at an event. Hehe. I sat down at work today in my chair creeper and with the help of a co worker tried to replicate the position of my arm and body. Measuring from my lap to three inches above my outstretched arm. 45-47 inches.  What an awesome day.

Knew that once Danglin's  pic was seen there would be questions.
Guys, a few years back when Pacific halibut became known as a target in Cali, the regs were adjusted closer to what they are in AK and the PCNW.
DO NOT confuse these fish with California halibut, a completely separate species, which are still off limits to harpoon.

No clue as to whether or not the harpoons I've made would hold up, but I'd sure like to know.
The hog tie method SinCoast specified is how to secure them, as it removes the fish's greatest leverage.

If you are planning to target these fish, or fish in areas where they may show, read through this thread and do your homework, as these fish are no joke. They are tougher and stronger than just about anything we'll catch here in the Golden state, save sharks, sturgeon, or Black seabass. landing them is a realm away from our usual suspects.

these were some great stories, and I've learned some new things from them!

Collected myself, and faced reality. paddled back in and tried to fish a bit more, pulled the crab pots and called it a day. when i got to shore, i felt like i was famous, hella people gave me hugs. didnt let it bother me, and went ahead with the rest of the day. the lost halibut didn't really hit me until today, when i was driving around, just thinking about what i did wrong. but there will always be a next time, and next time i will be more prepared! felt bad i killed the fish though. but it happens i guess.

overall great trip as always, with great conditions this time. its always fun at the cove, seeing new faces, as well as familiar ones. thank you so much Eric and and those who help to make this event possible.

you can see me smile in that kayak pic taken by eric, but that was before the Pachali ordeal.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/4445dbf83f4abe8dc9bff40dcd9ef37d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/b55b4038c51a748ffa100d536da71e26.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/52a999a23901b8216630df94aa08e60e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/12949b22aabaf3075da6b4829383c95a.jpg)

Man halibut are escape magicians BOB. That is no joke. My biggest halibut came to life after an hour in the back of my kayak and (50 plus hits over the head) and bleed out. I have no idea how in the world they can still manage to try to escape. It jump off my yak, but luckily the game clip stayed on. I've found that  stabbing them straight in the brain with a knife works well. I also heard cutting them at the base of their tails and snapping the bone will immobilize them for good. (No Zombie halibut). Sorry you had to learn the hard way, but that is definitely the "fish that got away", and one that will haunt you for a long time. Welcome to OG kayak fisherman status.  :smt001

After 2 days of wind Yakhopper and I hit the sea. My Cali Butt was only a mere eighteen inches shorter than champion Matt’s pac hali. 😜

GS12 WAS AWESOME!  The weatherman lied.

Thanks to Eric for putting on a hell of a show, Shuland for keeping us fed and happy, all my camp mates, and the whole crew for making us "The best group that visits Shelter Cove Campground".  Hell yes.  Im proud of us and what we do.

On that topic, this guy was so gentle releasing his King Salmon by-catch on Friday.  Very cool to see that shiny chrome.  PM an email address if you want better quality pics, IslandYak.

Thanks to everyone posting photos!  Looks like a great time was had by all with some fantastic fishing.  Congrats to Matt for putting in the work and landing that Pac halibut on tourney day!  You took a big gamble by pursuing them all day, and it paid off.  I can’t think of anyone more deserving of that fish than you.  Best fish to ever take GS!

Since I'm more likely to stumble upon a Bigfoot than a thresher up here in Oregon, I guess I'd better go chase me down my first Pac halibut this summer.  Can't let you have all the fun Matt  :smt004.

I saw a woman catch a thresher in Oregon once while salmon fishing. Go chase that unicorn Chris, they do exist!

Can someone help me with some ID's? I know many of the participants but there were also many I had either met for the first time or could not figure out who was behind the sunglasses or face masks. Will remove the picture once ID'd.  :smt006

So, how many Yelloweye carcasses were left at the cleaning table?

I've only made it half way through the pics and have already seen one on a stringer.

There was a salmon carcass there on Thursday, dont know where that came from if it was us or a power boater.

I'm not seeing a definite YE in the pics.   I see one that might be suspicious.  Maybe.  Am I missing something?

Ben’s right, I’m still trying to figure out a new handle.  But my karaoke skills are definitely not worthy of the Sin Coast handle!

Great pics Hojo, thanks for documenting and thanks again Eric et al for putting on an amazing event. Look forward to getting to know this community more and returning to the cove!

Thanks again Eric for an Epic GS12! I can't remember better conditions for a tournament. So many friendly and welcoming people, both old and new, and so much great food! My camera experienced technical difficulties early the day of the tournament, so only a few pictures to offer this time. Probably the best is the of the "one that got away", a 37" hitchhiker that I muscled up on an already hooked 25", only to have him let go just out of my reach. I yelled at Frank/Ghost who was next to me to drop down, and he did, for a solid hookup and battle. Congrats Frank!
I LOVE THE COVE

Hate to say it,
But,
I'm glad GS is over and everyone has made it home safe.
Otherwise,
This may have ruined the vibe.

I'm dense.  What are we looking at Eric?  I think it's the campground?

A downed tree in the campground? BTW, the campground is still for sale!

large tree at top of campground came down over the whole top two sites.
If this happened a few days earlier, we could be minus a few members.

Campground has been for sale since date of purchase.
Might actually sell if the price ever gets down to value of property.
