I took this plunge in January with the same setup a Sean is getting but in a 9wt and I set it up for bass fishing top water poppers and such. I plan to get another spool for a sinking line once I learn more about sinking line.

That's a slick set up braddah. Don't forget it when you come up to my neck o the woods. Sure it would do a good job on some of the resident Chinooks..  :smt002

Sean - You will LOVE the Redington. They are some of the lightest rods out there for the various line wieghts, but still have great power and are really a pleasure to cast. As with all the fast action fly rods they are vulnerable to 'high - sticking' ... if you hold the rod too vertically, particularly when landing a good fish, you stand a good chance of breaking the tip section. I've done this. Keep it LOW! See you at Bamlll. Tom

PS - Here's my first S.F. Bay striper from the yak. Back in April I think.

When you say keep it low do you mean just don't try to muscle the fish around w/ the rod? Wait for larger fish to poop out and then bring them in?

Z it's like when you have a little too much line out when you lift the fish for the net or tail grab, etc., so you lift the rod a little higher and the tip section goes snap. The closer to a 90% rod-line angle you have, the more strain the rod can handle because it's spread out the length of the rod. If you high stick most of the load in concentrated on the tip section.

Well, I'm using a old 4wt rod. I'll let you know how it sounds when it goes snap!

Z - I've seen the tip snap on fast action graphite spining rods as well - when landing a good fish in close you will sometimes instinctively move the rod high and behind you to remove any slack and bring the fish closer - this is where there is too much strain on the tip section of these fast action rods and 'POW!', you get the smell of graphite powder and a more complicated landing than you were planning on! I try to grab the leader as soon as I can when a fish is along side - sometimes this means choking-up on the rod rather than raising it back behind you. There are some release tools out there that can also help in landing-releasing fish that are easier on your rod and the fish since they can help reach the leader when it's farther away and putting less strain on the rod tip, and allow turning the fish loose with the flick of the wrist. www.dehooker4arc.com is one. I've got a similar product that I haven't even tried yet - maybe at the Bendo in Mendo!
