Yak fishing out of Moonstone Beach and other Cambria locations 7/30-8/5/07. May make a run up to southern Big Sur in search of the secret "Flemish Cap". Company welcome.

Do you rent a house in Cambria?  That's where I first got the idea to kayak fish.  I was staying there with another couple 3 years ago and saw a young man come in from the kelp beds on a kayak.  He was a local and said the kelp beds were full on lingcod. That's when I got the bug to start fishing again after not fishing for about 15 years.  Haven't been down there since to try from a kayak and I heard the new restrictions will make a lot of that area inaccesable.

Hey Doug

I am renting a house just off Moonstone which sleeps 6. Unfortunately between my family and friends we don't have any extra beds. As you know there are some primo rockfish and lingcod areas down there, halibut too.

Count me in.

Hopefully my favorite fishing spot is still open when you get here.  Saw PJ the other day whilst circulating a petition to spare my little slice of heaven from the MPA status. I’m not sure he’s going to reveal the location of the now infamous Flemish Cap but I’m sure he would be interested in joining in too.

Great to have some locals along.  :smt006 My kids want to have a MBF tournament, I will let you know the details as we get closer. I didn't think PJ would reveal the location of the cap, but is fun to think about the possibilities. I think the rumor up north is that it is in GWS infested waters which keeps other yak anglers away.

I'd be interested in tagging along.  Yahoo says it would take about 2 hours from monterey heading down HWY 1.  I find that hard to believe as it takes nearly an hour and a half to get to Limekiln.  Love fishing the Sur.

When are the regs and restrictions for the central coast going to be released?

I'm not sure what my work schedule will be like then as I'm going through a career change right now, but I love that area and will try and make it if I can. That time of year is primo.

Nomad, I think it's faster to cut across to the 101, make a straight shot down, and then cut back across to Cambria than to take the 1.If you make it down there it will be a blast. :smt003

When are the regs and restrictions for the central coast going to be released?

Final decision from the Commission is in April.

I would think the timing indicates that they intend to implement these rules before the RF season opens. But it's not entirely clear if the closings will kick-in immediately or if areas might be kept open pending legal actions.

Nomad,  I'd second the comment on the 101 route if you're looking to save time. I've never timed it but 2 hours seems unrealistic on the Hwy1 in the summer.

Scott,

Hope you have fun down here, sure you will. I drive the 1 from Cambria to Santa Cruz at least once a month & the time's about always the same (w/out stopping);  3 hrs from SC to Cambria, Big Sur is exactly 1.5 to or from Cambria.  I rarely if ever get stuck behind the RV who wont pull over so the times always the same.

I think theres some really good spots between Piedras & Ragged Pt. If any of us are as adventurous as the guys who fished Garrapata there's probably a similar result to be had.

Also, anyone who's ever fished Cambria or ever going to fish Cambria should give a big thanks to Littoral for his last round of petitioning the DFG to let them know there are people who love to fish these grounds. All of us owe him a beer.

Hey PJ -

For sure thanks to Littoral and you for fighting for anglers rights on the central coast. I will  bring the  beer if you want to hook up as long as it isn't  in the GWS infested waters of piedras  blancas and you don't have to reveal the location of the flemish cap. It will be a week long fishing party, check out the fishing tournament but beware my kids can really fish and they  like to win.

My Thanks to Littoral as well.
Hearst Beach was the first location that I ever fished or launch into the surf for that matter, It's also the location for the first and only time I every wiped out, and I did that coming back in.
Hearst Beach is an excellent area to fish. I learned that from the locals.
One local in particular was going in and out of the surf in a beat up old reac kiwi yak( anybody remember them?) told that it was some of the best Threshers Shark waters around.
That was a few years ago. Does anybody know if Hearst Beach is still open to fishing?
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

All of us owe him a beer.

Sweet!
