General Talk / So that happened...
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:50:07 PM »
So that happened.... I fell, hit my head, and caught a ride to the ER right before Aoty ceremony was kicking off.

It was a great day at the lake. Got otw about 8.  Caught a couple fish.  Back on land about 12.  Sun was shining. Spent some time catching up with friends.  Then enjoyed the killer potluck.  Life is good.

Afterwards I was standing there talking to friends. Started feeling lightheaded so I sat down. Then it washed over me so fast.  Everything just started going white and I felt so hot and dizzy, put my head in my hands....and that was it.   I woke up on my back, really confused. I was helped to a bench.  The ranger came over and started asking me questions....and then I lost consciousness again. I open my eyes and there’s  2 paramedics there that weren’t there before, vomit on my pants I don’t remember, my heads pounding and I’m pretty confused.

ER gave me fluids, looked me over, checked my vitals and let me go.   Not sure why I passed out. I guess I was pretty tired, only got a couple hours of sleep.  Didnt hydrate sufficiently.   I had three beers and hit off a joint.  Nothing crazy.

Well hitting my head gave me a minor concussion and a sore neck. The whole experience was really embarrassing. Gonna get checked out this week by the doc to make sure my dome’s ok.

To those of you that helped me.  Thank you so much.  Really glad someone was there.   And to everyone else I’m so sorry if you got freaked out.  Hope I didn’t bring any negativity on the group.

CA Regulations / Cape Mendocino closure
« on: March 21, 2016, 03:29:53 PM »
There's a potential closure of Cape Mendocino being considered by DFW and PFMC....not good.   In an email response, Joanna Grebel said in order to expand fishing opportunitiues they need to close areas to stay under the Yellow eye rf catch limit....but their just arent any yelloweyes being caught at the cape.  Here's her email response:

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for your email.  We have not come to any decisions yet on what, if any areas, will be closed.  We requested input on possible areas to close as a way to allow for more fishing opportunity, particularly in the northern areas.  We'd like to provide more time on the water and maybe even deeper depths, but we probably cannot do it without some assurance that we can stay within our allowable catch limits of yelloweye rockfish.  If we stick with our current depths and seasons, then no closures will be needed.  But if we start looking at providing more opportunities, some closures will likely be necessary.  It is a tradeoff and we look forward to getting more input from our public on this. But to be very clear -- we are still in the discussion phase and no decisions have been made.

I appreciate your feedback on this particular location and we will keep it in mind as we move forward.

Thanks,
Joanna

I find myself bitching about our shorter rcg fishing season up here but I would never trade a longer season for the few days I get to fish at the cape!

Post up your pics from the Cape so everyone can see whats on the line!!!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Clear Lake Crappies
« on: January 26, 2016, 06:00:19 PM »
Spent Sunday at CL. The water was filled with debris on the north side of Braito's but was clear and cold over by shag rock.  The crappie are in there pretty thick too.  They were close to the bottom in 30fow.  Caught a couple bass moving around.  When that stopped producing headed back near shag rock and the crappie were ready to play.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Track mounted rod holders
« on: October 06, 2015, 09:51:38 PM »
Are the track mounted rod holders sturdy?  I'd like to mount a couple short tracks about a foot long on each side instead of mounting ram ball or flush mounts.  Figure it gives more versatility for rod holders camera mounts and other whiz bang contraptions.

Rod holder with extension mounted on track? Seems like it would be kind of wobbly, anybody have any issues?

General Fishing Tips / Tying adjustable mooch rigs
« on: August 25, 2015, 02:37:20 PM »
Anyone tying their own adjustsble mooch rigs?  Any issues with using braided line for the sliding snell knot?  It's so much easier to wrap then mono.  I like making my own gear but sliding snell knot is a pita!

General Talk / No more problem with Lowrance FF
« on: June 13, 2015, 06:44:53 PM »
Ive had the Lowrance Elite 4 HDI since December 2014.  Its always worked great until GS9.  Day of the tourney it powered but depth was off and stuck at 30fow.  I powered it off/on same thing.  Powered it off/on again than it shut off and wouldn't come back on.  Lowrance sent me a replacement Chirp unit but this one wont power on at all...took it out of the box this morning to go fishing but when I got on the water it was no go, spent 15-20 minutes troubleshooting before I said F it.  Seriously disappointed.  Got a weekend trip coming up next weekend was hoping to have my gps unit on board :smt013

Battery has full 12.8V, same voltage at power cable connector, fuse is good, wiring is good...am I missing something?

Would they send me a replacement unit without testing it?

Wanted To Buy / WTB Thule Xsporter
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:51:51 PM »
Looking to outfit my Tacoma with Thule Xsporter. Been checking Craigslist but not alot of used ones around Humboldt.  Anyone have one they want to sell?

Had a custom built rack on my Dodge that I built myself, but now I can't haul yaks on the Taco!  Good thing I outfitted my gf's Honda for her!

Work shop is under some serious renovations, so welding up a new rack isn't really an option till mid summer.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Lowrance Elite 4 HDI transducer mount
« on: December 05, 2014, 01:03:15 PM »
Hey guys...Im ordering a Lowrance Elite 4 hdi with transducer today... Found good deal online.  (No one local has one in stock).  My yak is an OK Scrambler XT.  I was thinking I should order a scupper mount for the transducer.   This might be a dumb question but...does the scupper mount come with a transducer or is it just hardware that attaches to the transducer that comes with the Elite 4 unit?

Are there better ways to mount transducer to older model yak? I've got a couple ideas searching threads.  I don't want to do to much surgery to the yak beacause I will most likely be upgrading yaks next year and keep the scrambler for nephews.

Appreciate any ideas...thx

For Sale / Need a Gopro Hero 3+ lens cover?
« on: July 30, 2014, 06:06:47 PM »
I recently bought the lens cover kit for my GoPro 3. The package said it fit the 3 and 3+....it lied, much to my dismay.  I really want to keep the waterproof housing lens scratch free to get my Rockfish Wars 1st place catch captured on video!  Bwahahaha!  :smt044

For reals tho, one call to GoPro and they dropped the right lens cover in the mail and apologized for the package typo.  Got it today!  So I'll be able to capture my acceptance of  the AOTY prize for posterity!

Not signed up for either of those things!  Lol.  But I think I will...sounds like a a helluva good time!

Enough blathering...I got a Hero 3+ lens cover for the waterproof housing...you want it, it's yours no charge.  Nice to see a company stand behind there products.
