Title: 11-4-17 HMB RESCUE Lost & Found
Post by: Str8FishiN on November 04, 2017, 02:51:12 PM
I wasn't able to make it to the opener but have seen a lot of nice crabs caught and this.  Sounds like someone's kayak sank last night and the kayaker was successfully rescued by some our badass fishing buddies.  I wasn't there so I'm looking forward to hearing details.

Kayaking at night is not the best idea. Glad no one got injured or hurt. Waiting for the story.

"six crabpots tied to it"
I've never had more than 3 on my yak (usually 2), and don't tie them down to my yak, other than being secured by my pvc-scupper rack. Glad the dude is safe... Gear can be replaced.

Was it a sit inside kayak? How did he manage to sink it from just flipping it over?

Kayaking at night is actually pretty awesome if you know what you are doing.
I've chased pots at Doran at midnight, paddled out to the mile buoy at Albion at 4AM, fished the Delta at 1AM, all usually solo.
It's peaceful yet a little scary at the same time. Hard to explain.
Your senses definitely become a bit more acute.
Just be prepared and definitely know your limits.

Weight of pots and gear strapped to kayak?

Kayaking at night is great for launching fireworks and having bonfires in the cove.

A few leaks from the surf dump and it's over. All that weight TIED to a hull full of water....no way are you staying on. You are never going to be able to right that with a load tied to it.
Somebody was online reading and went gung-ho on his brand new kayak I bet without knowing limitations.

I was under the impression that you are only allowed 5 crab pots per person and therefore only 5 per kayak. I put 4 on my kayak and it feels pretty maxed out.

Idk..5 pots plus other gear and accessoriesc isnt that teetering on going beyond a yak’s weight capacity?
Anyhow, glad he’s ok. Goos job on whoever helped out.

Weight capacity not problematic. Trying to balance 6 pots while paddling (plus conditions) is difficult at best, and once it flips, trying to upright a kayak tied down with gear in the dark...
Trying to untie gear in an upside down yak even in daytime, one would still be doing it by feel, unless you have a snorkel mask handy.

Again, glad the dude is safe.

There is no limit in California to the number of traps or rings you can work from a kayak.

I thought there is no limit for number of pots but there is a limit for rings.  Need to read that section again.

I usually put 20 pots on my yak. Without wearing a pfd too so my yak is lighter. I can also bench 600 lbs. and fly. And I can breathe underwater . Just sayin.  :smt002 :smt002
