I tried out that lightnin rod this past weekend. It is pretty much all that I want for big ling lures. While I didn't get a fish, I did manage to straighten the heck out of a Mustad single hook that I had on a diamond bar.  Plenty of lifting power with this baby.

I just got a new St Croix Tidemaster and love it.  It's the TC70MHF (7foot, 1 piece, line wght 10-20lb, lure wght 1/2 - 1 1/2).  My intention with this rod was to get a light set-up for shallow water rockfishing but it is so much more capable than that.  It can jig up to 2 ounces and it is really light, sensitive and has a good backbone.  It can handle a lingcod better than my bigger rod, an Ugly Stick Tiger and it's still fun to catch smaller blues and olives.  It casts well, too wheras my Ugly Stick does not.  When I switch between setups, the first thing I notice when i pick up the Ugly Stick is that it feels like a spongy broom handle compared to the St Croix.

I still need a bigger rod for heavier lures - but not for bigger fish so I'm pretty stoked with the St Croix.  I've had it out about 4 times now so the jury's out on reliability but I totally destroy all gear.  The only rods that seem to stand up to the abuse are Ugly Sticks.  This season I killed a Reddington, a Pflueger, a Fenwick and a Shimano (some because of neglect and some because of outright abuse - but I am excluding the 2 rods I lost).  This is my first St Croix so we'll see how it lasts.
Fishing is cool
