Title: How's my shopping list
Post by: FriedKalamari on November 15, 2017, 06:18:51 PM
Hey everyone I'm putting together a shopping list for all those 'little things' needed before for going out in the ocean.

Hoping everyone can give me the ok on the equipment I'm buying especially the pfd and radio.

Feel free to recommend anything else I need (I already have a wetsuit, garmin 300c ff, fish grippers, and bilge pump).  This is for a Hobie Outback.

I recommend getting some experience on the ocean before taking your downrigger out.

I don't see GPS on the list.

Immersion wear?

I also recommend having redundancy on things such as VHF, compass and GPS.

Best of luck~  :smt001

PS - Your VHF and PFD look fine.

Also you are required to carry a net of at least 18" diameter.

I dont know anything about that vhf but I know the standard horizon hx300 is very popular and the one I use. Its easy to operate and hasnt given me any problems. I have that downrigger and I think id rather have the scotty depthmaster with a cut down boom. The laketroller is a little flimsy and mine was having problems with the drag on the first trip. Its was also kind of difficult to reel in. The depthmaster looks more solid and has a better system for taking the downrigger in and out of freespool. Last thing is that walmart has cheaper dry bags but dont have straps to use as a backpack.

You can get a less expensive compass.  A suunto or ritchie should run about $40 for a decent one.  Carry a second orienteering compass as a backup.

A standard fox 40 whistle is fine.  $6 at walmart.

You need a net minimum 18" opening.

drysuit or wetsuit.

OOOhhhh.... vicarious shopping!
Radio seems fine.  I have the Standard Horizon HX300, which I really like. Don't have any experience with Uniden.
For PFD, I'd go with a brand for kayak anglers, which has more pockets.
Marine compass... I don't have.  My backup for the compass on my FF is a whistle/compass combo found online and at REI, much cheaper, smaller, kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Waterproof backpack... I don't use, I'm more of a minimalist though.  A small drybag may meet your needs... unless you got a lot of stuff you plan on taking in your yak.  I try to fit everything in my Plano box.
Fish bat?  Don't use one.  I use a knife to stab the ling's brain, cut gills, then clip... or buy a small metal pipe at HD for fraction of the price.
Downrigger? For ocean, I've used it for salmon fishing once, and nice to have for trolling lakes.  NOt a must, since there are alternatives (Deepdiver, banana weights, etc.)

Other than the net mentioned in one of the replies, you might want the following:
Hog trough (to measure minimum size on your ling or halibut, or any other fish except RF)
Plano box with rod holder attachment.
coffee sack (potato sack) to keep your catch covered from the sun
I'm sure a gameclip is on your list, and make sure to attach it to a clip, or it will disappear from your tankwell
Bunch of PVC and pool noodles for DIY projects

Happy shopping!

I need to think about gps as I realize now the garmin 300 that came with the setup doesn't have it.  Separate handheld or perhaps buy a new ff altogether.

Thanks for the feedback on these ! I'll research the downriggers more.

As others have said, you can save money on the compass and fish clubber. For the compass, I have this one mounted to the center hatch on my hobie (easy to see and out of the way)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FEXZGW?psc=1

To beat down the fish, I've got a short piece of heavy PVC, with small float attached.

I've got the Scotty depthmaster downrigger and it is awesome, but it takes some effort to mount it on a kayak.

I didn't see a game clip (essentially, a super heavy duty stainless stringer) on your list, and I'd consider that essential.

You must have gotten a nice lapdance when it berzerk on you! To be honest, I've only gaffed the halibut, but always knife any ling that doesn't lay down... lol

Thanks for good tips here, adding these.  I'm definitely the same way on being a minimalist.  Really would prefer not to have 'stuff' all over the place.  I'll scratch the compass and whistle i had I like you inexpensive combo idea.

The fishbat was reminiscent of experiences catching halibut.  can't imagine pulling one of these onboard a kayak fully kicking.

Those combo whistle compassas are not sufficiently accurate for our purposes. Get a good direct read that you can see while you paddle/pedal.

Even after laying on the wood and cutting the gills, you still get zombie fish that thrash back to life later. I grab them with a lip gripper, bash their head against the side of the yak with a mallet, and put them on the game clip. Then snip the gills with trauma shears, and toss them into the back compartment of my T13. Dip the burlap sack in the ocean and cover them with it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Here's what I consider the best rig for the clip. The game clip tied to a stainless steel spring clip with a short rope and then clip that into a stainless steel padeye thats bolted on to the kayak with a small piece of backing to keep it from tearing out.

Why is the game clip necessary?  Because unless you plan on keeping your fish inside your hull, your fish will disappear from your tankwell from waves/surf, seals, or the zombie fish resuscitating/coming back to life and jumping back into the ocean. And if your gameclip isn't clipped onto your yak, it will sink to the bottom of the sea... it's probably happened to almost everybody, which is why most of us have bought more than one in our lifetime... lol.

I haven't carried a bonker for years, but if I did I would prefer wood to aluminium, because f=ma.

It is a good idea to dress for immersion.

The cheapest, standard, and arguable safer option is the 3mm farmer john wetsuit with a front zip.

Just a suggestion,
Attach your game clip to the yak with a section of bungee instead of rope.
If your big Ling or Hali jumps ship before a good wooden shampoo .... you'll thank me.

I had a longer shopping list when I first prepared to get in the ocean, and at least half that stuff - big dry bags, milk crates, rod holders on milk crates - is sitting alone and unloved, gathering dust in the garage.

Go slow, DIY all that you can and if you find it useful, then go shopping.

I use a stout tree limb, cut to size, as a fish bonker.  It's cheap, and it floats.  Never saw a reason to buy something to replace it.

Don't know if anybody has mentioned it yet, but if fishing for halibut, I'd highly recommend a gaff. Trying to net a halibut (especially with your minimal 18" net) is a recipe for disaster, and a lip gripper is out of the question.

Lip gripper is plan C for sure, but it can work after the halibut has broken your rod while stealing your net in your futile attempt to net it  :smt044 I hope I never do that again!

OFFSHORE 30L Heavy Duty Waterproof Backpack Dry Bag & Cell Phone Case
http://a.co/6VwbmFf

Out of all the drybags/ boxes I've bought (too many? 7/3 respectively), I really only use a 5L surf-to-summit I bought to round out free shipping at sierra trading. It gets my phone, keys, wallet and that's all I take that needs to be dry. If I want to photograph something, I'll bring a small water proof camera I've got, or a $30 gopro knockoff in a waterproof housing. Not dropping my phone in the drink. No sir.  If I'm camping, I'll use the larger bags, but that's pretty much the only time I do.

Ditch the downrigger & fish bonker. Both unnecessary, unless you like whacking fish for shits & giggles. Which is an experience that most yakfishers should try at least once. But still not jecessary. Simply put fish on the gameclip [must add to your list!] and cut the gills.

Sup, guys?

I havenÂ’t read each and every response, so itÂ’s likely some of this has already been said...

- That VHF is probably just fine, but two brands are known to be the best: Standard Horizon and Icomm.

- You need a wetsuit or drysuit.

- You probably should try on PFDs in person and pick one that fits you and has pockets where you want them. (I like my NRS Chinook PFD, but there are other good ones on the market).

- YouÂ’ll want a safety knife of some sort to clip to your PFD. (I like my NRS CoPilot knife, and use it for all kinds of things.)

- I like to bring a Dexter “Cut and Gut” knife with me on the water. I bleed out all my fish, gut them, and pack them on ice in a fish bag.

- YouÂ’ll eventually want a nice fishfinder with GPS/chartplotter. (I like my Lowrance Hook 5).

- YouÂ’ll want a good rod holder if you donÂ’t have one already. (I like my Folbe.)
