Well I knew that we were taking our chances by lauching straight off the beach, but went for it anyway. Long story short  all three of us wiped out attempting surf launches and / or landings before the day was over.
My first proper yard sale, and I definitely came away with some leasons learned. Two of us lost our mirage drives, they were under the bunjie cord, but rolled out. Talk about expensive, there are now two md180 w turbo fins in the surf, if anyone happens to find them we will reward $$.
Luckily all the tackle was recovered, and we still came back with 16 dungeness.
I will be securing my drive with a leash from now on!
Still managed to enjoy some time otw, and trying to be good humored about the whole ordeal   :smt005

Expensive lesson.  ItÂ’s worth the walk down to the other end of the beach.  But I have seen a zodiac flip down there also.  Some days itÂ’s just good to go elsewhere.

Glad you are all ok

Sorry to hear about your "yard sale".  How far from shore when lost your Mirrage drive?  If not too far from shore, I would come back there on a low tide to look for it if I were you.

I've been to Anchor Bay a handful of times,  and had always walked up to chicken cove, but when we arrived it looked really calm and we decided to go for it. Won't be doing that again.

The store bought Hobie leash is no guarantee.  I've had mine break.

I had a hard landing there myself on Saturday.  I came in at high tide, so Chicken wasn't an option. While I didn't yardsale, I got slammed pretty hard and broke a rudder pin.

Kinda. Doing chicken cove with the tide up got Bryan a broken net and a broken very expensive paddle.  :smt010

There are a lot fine points to a successful surf launch and a few extra ones if you a launching a Hobie. I've seen guys stand 10-15 feet from the waters edge and think they are going to drag their heavy boat across the sand and launch before the window closes. I've seen guys sit in their boat on the waters edge and wait for a wave to come in and float them.  Neither method worked.  So, however you launched it probably wasn't as bad as those.
Especially with a crab trap loaded yak it really helps to take advantage of the buddy system. The more experience kayaker can wade out and stabilize the boat while you hop in and then give you a push to get some forward speed going. I like the buddy system even better for landing. The first person in wades out and secures the bow of the incoming boat.
That said, stuff happens. Last month I had a perfect launch. Made it through the first wave no problem. Then my boat decided it was going to turn right. I paddled as hard as I could to straighten it but it kept going right till the next wave flipped it. I had what I thought was a strong leash on my mirage drive, It broke and I lost the drive. Fortunately a fine NCKA brother found washed up on the beach. I hope yours is found too.
