I am picking up 2013 this Saturday.
I have a 6 1/2 bed with hitch extension that I can mount the rear end to. The seller thinks its a bad idea with 10 sticking out the back end.
Is this a pretty bad way to drive 3 hour drive with lots of mountain turns? Or should I take my big flatbed to bring it home.
Please share your wisdom.

I don't think it's a problem with a 6.5ft bed + extension.   Just put a red flag at the end of the kayak and that should be legal.

Here's some ideas on the start of the video, personally I wouldn't do it the way mentioned.

I definitely wouldn't want10' sticking out. Other drivers are not that attentive especially if they merge behind you while you pass them. It sounds like a huge liability.

I've just got an Adventure, not the AI, and I carry it on a homemade roof rack that's 5' long. That means about 5' to 6' is hanging over on either end. While that doesn't sound like a lot, it sure looks like a lot. I'd also be worried about putting too much stress on the plastic if more than about 6' is hanging out.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

I am hoping that extension would work.
I have a trailex setup but haven't registered it yet....how to make it to DMV when you work.
But driving a trailer through mountain pass should be fun on some of the corners on 299.
I am the one most likely picking up the demo AI at the Headwaters.
Are they good guys to work with?

I was wrong, technically it could be legal, 2/3rds the wheel base of the vehicle from the last point of support is the way I read the rules. Check this out, 5.5' bed with an AI in it. He's using his homemade aka benches under the boat to spread the load and ratchet strapping the bed extender to the truck to get a more solid mount.
I would be careful with corners and steep approaches.

I use one Yakima bar (with a boat loader bar) and a trailer hitch attachment.  It's secure and I don't worry about tailgaters too much.
