That Jacksmelt seems s little pale to me and doesn't have the yellow blush at it's gil cover - or am I thinking of something else? Was it out of the water for awhile before the pic was taken? Here's another one of a js.

Good info on the pics guys. Thanks for taking the time.

With all the baitfish around SC/ I have ben filling my 'well' and brining them for future use. I have been using the following recipe (minus the anise oil) and it seems to work well. The bluing is a bit hard to find but my local safeway had it.

Kirk (monkeyface) made this up over the past few years. Side project, DFG didnt give him a cent to do it, he just did it for all of us and the fish.....
-
Wow, nice chart, Sharky. I'll print it out and fold it into my fish ID book. And thanks for starting this, Mooch.

obkook.... i believe you are right, i think that it a topsmelt, and the one you showed was a jacksmelt
-
BTW that was not the final version. DFG gave him no thanks and actually made him make changes before they would send it to print. the final version should be in print soon.....
-
Thanks for the correction of the topsmelt. I'm learning something new from the chart already! :smt001

porky, I see quite a few of them out of Santa Cruz, especially when working the sabiki deeper towards the bottom. Sometimes they suspend in schools too ... at times I've loaded up a sabiki with them mid-water.

Really, man i had no idea, I love learning about new fish in our area.
Do they get bigger? And there good for bait huh?
How deep are u catching those, cool looking fish!

I've not seen them bigger than handsized. I'd anything you catch on the sabiki would be good live bait. I'm not fishing more than 60' deep out of SC. Mostly find them on bottom, but sometimes suspended.

Interesting, thanks for the cool info Allen!

we made bait last weekend and wondered what one was...Looks like it was a Jack Mack. That 2nd dorsal (or adipose) had us stumped.

I catch those almost every time I fish for sand dabs. They make great bait and keep/stay alive fairly well

Great thread & huge props to Kirk monkeyface for doing the chart :smt001 AND putting up with DFG for sending back a freebie for revisions. :smt012

Thanks for the props on the baitfish guide doods. Just sent a long post with links and attachments that for some reason has disappeared. Will try again...

Moderator's note:
I moved Monkeyface's (Kirk's) baitfish ID to it's own sticky topic on the main FishTalk board. I thought it deserved not to be buried three pages into this post.

red band minnow from lake Tahoe....
-
Can't identify these other 2 minnows - also caught in Tahoe....anyone care to research?
-
The top one is a speckled dace, the bottom is a Lahontan redside, the same as the red band minnow in the previous post but without the redband. Both minnows are native to Lake Tahoe.
