Title: Del Valle - NCKA "Fishin" and "Chillin" 10/12-10/14
Post by: Great Bass 2 on October 13, 2007, 07:50:57 PM
Well after over 200 hookup posts, the real anglers showed up on Friday to tough out the storm. I showed up on Saturday morning for the good weather, fishing and company.  :smt003 Launched at 7AM and trolled the south area around the ramp with no luck. A few trout on the surface so I switched to fan casting 1/8 oz watermellon Kastmasters and hooked a 12 inch trout. Trolled up to the campsite and dropped off the man dogs. Headed up to the narrows and had no luck there. Switched rigs several times and at 1000 ended up trolling the downrigger with flashers and an Uncle Larry's trolling spinner and a Rapala JSR in shad pattern with a black wooly bugger teaser. Hooked a 19 inch striper just off the campground on the wooly bugger, another 12 inch trout on the rapala near the launch ramp and a 12 inch crappie just north of the launch ramp on the wooly bugger. Grilled many man dogs then headed home to do some chores. Ran into ChuckE on my way home, stylishly late for the event. Sorry my trout clinic was cut short but the lunch ran late. If anyone wants additional tips, feel free to PM me or hookup with me. I am always open to sharing my "secrets" or should I call it Techniques XJ 15-20.  :smt005

Man those pics sure look different than Friday's scene.  There were a few hardcore anglers braving the elements.  I was trolling and casting a rapala J7 with no luck.  I did get a really small bass and as I was slowly reeling him in, a larger one tried to hitchhike but let go near the yak.  I had to leave early to pickup my kid but I hope you guys enjoyed the bbq ribs that I brought.

GB2, tell us how you rigged your teaser! just on a dropper loop? no scent/bait on the teaser?
how deep did you keep the downrigger? did any fish pull the release or did you have to do that?
you keep so many secrets!  :smt044

Saturday, I surfed 4-mile, I saw dolphins come to within 20 feet of the shore in the cove between 3 and 4 mile.
3 guys shore fished the 4-mile point and I saw them pull in some perch, and maybe a small cabezon or rockfish.
A pelican dive bombed the kelp next to me, still some bait hiding in there, but not like last time I surfed it.
There was one powerboat drifting halibut territory out there, can't imagine they got anything, but who knows.
medium sized weak waves, but a lot of them, sunny and warm. great surfing.

Sunday, I slept in,  :smt002

OK John, I will trade you 3 trout secrets for one of your secret locations.  :smt005 Because you are a nice family guy I will share some secrets with you and the rest of the world on the internet (English reading).

The JSR dives to 10 ft plus. The larger JSR will dive to 12-15 ft. I tie a gold bead black wooly bugger directly to the line using a palomar with the hook gap facing up so the bugger is upside down just like drop shotting for LMB. I tried a dropper loop and 3 way swivel but they are more prone to tangles. I tie the bugger 1.5-2.5 ft above the Rapala. I stare in the morning with 2-3 ft then as I re-tie new luers it gets closer to the plug. I start fishing this rig around 10-11 AM as I begin my switch from trout to warm water species. This combo will take trout, LMB, SMB, SB and Crappie. The JSR is a rattling - suspending lure which makes it perfect for yak trolling. Try it on Lexington next time you go, it's the bomb. I have also used olive wooly buggers, clouser minnows and deceivers but the black bugger seems to be the most consistent. I use liquid scent or 1/4 inch red powerbait earthworm to scent all of my trout lures.

As far as downriggers, I usually start using them around 1000 AM. From 7-10 AM I pull Rapala J-7 and SR5 in various colors. The SR5's I run on 8# fluoro with the wooly bugger teaser. Depending on the water temperature, I usually start around 12-15 ft down. The warmer the water the deeper I start. If I am marking fish, I run the downrigger 2-3 ft above the fish. I have never had a trout under 14 inches pop the the release but I also use a snubber which makes it more difficult.

Scott

thanks for spilling the beans on your secret rigging techniques!

scott, you do well when the fishing is tougher I have noticed and I think it might be the extra effort you put in when trolling.

(of course jfish did pretty well with his flylined crawler too,  :smt002).

the teaser will reduce the diving range of the plug a bit due to more water resistance tho, right?

I've never tied up a dropshot rig, only a dropper loop which I just learned this year.  But I do use a palomar at times, so I think I get the idea. I am tempted tho to tie it into a small dropper loop myself. thanks for the ideas!

when the stormy weather gets here, I might hit the quarry lakes in fremont like last year.  I've got a few new trolling ideas to try out. Then in the spring, I might hit a secret lake or two and possibly even lexington although I hear they are going to pretty much fully drain it this year  :smt009.

Scott, when you stopped to say goodbye at the launch, I had thought you had a very short seminar or I had delayed walking back to the campsite much longer than I thought. It was great meeting you and all the others. That Friday downpour was epic...thought I'd be getting swimming lessons right there at the picnic table. Now, if only I can figure out how my PFD sprouted legs and walked away...

Yeah sorry about the clinic. Had to get home to do some chores and family stuff. Cooking those dogs took longer than I thought. Nice meeting you and thanks for the CD. I looked at it briefly. Haven't listened to the music yet.

First of all I want to thank Mooch for putting the Del Valle Fishin and Chillin together and allowing me and my friend Ken to participate. It was something that we wanted to do for a long time but never got around to it. It sure was a memorable event and we had a lot of fun. Got to meet so many nice and fun loving people! It was great.

Since I am terrible with names, I am not even going to try here. Friday was definitely challenging and we all got soaked. Fishing for bass was really slow but I did manage 7 and missed just as many bites. The highlight was the food and drying up at the campfire Friday night. Here are some friday pictures.

Mooch is steaming here?

It's beginning to look a lot like christmas...

Man, what a weekend.  It was too much fun, and saturday night's potluck was a meatlovers delight.  FH's ribs - Da bomb.

As usual, I went very minimal, bringing only a sleeping pad, a spare blanket, and a 20 degree sleeping bag for bedding.  Had planned to sleep outside, but then Guitarzan and all his talk about tarantulas.  I caved and asked if I could take the spare half of chuck's tent.  As a good buddy does, he said "Of Course"

Sunday morning I paddled out with the intent of trolling all the way to the dam.  I was dragging a bucktail kastmaster on a Gloomis spinning rig which I mooched from mooch, and a shallow diving rapala on my shorty rod.  as I was rounding a point, the kastmaster goes off, then pops off.  I paddled back to where the hit was and marked a bunch of fish on a hump coming up to 14-17 feet from the 25 feet floor.  I dropped down and BENDO, drag stripper!  It was a decent sized smallie.  No camera so I thumbed it and paddled over to Big J who was nearby and asked for a few snapshots.  She obliged, can't wait to see the fish.  Released and it swam away.

paddled back to that hump and floated the Kastmaster down, BENDO.  17 inch LM!  Gave up on that spot though the marks were there, and went back to trolling.  missed a few short bites, and lost some hardware to submerged trees but didn't bag anything for home.

Other interesting notes include REALLY messing up my car getting to DV after my roof rack collapsed.  Also, when they say they lock the gates at 2000 hrs, they really mean it!!

Arrived at the lake earily enough to get the last parking pass! Yee haa. It was still somewhat sunny then, Loaded up my gear, and headed to camp.  When I arrived, Joel was there and helped me unload.  The firewood was still at the truck (no room on the 2 yaks I had) Was able to retreive the wood and the cooler with the skirt steaks with Ben's Scanoe (thanks again Ben) while on my way back to the truck (In Ben's Scanoe) the rain started, just sprinkles, but it was strady.  On the way back the sprinkles wern't sprinkles anylonger!
It rained enough to have everyone in their waders, wet suits, rain gear whatever it was we had to stay dry in we were in!  Setting up tents in the rain was no fun.  Some time around dark 30 the rain stopped!  The fire got started, and so did the "Man Grill"

It was good to finally meet all the people I had been reading posts from for so long now.  All good people!   Food was "off da hook"  and a lot of it!

Saturday morning started off with clear skies!  Turned into a beautiful day!  Fishing for me was standard, "Skunked"  I did have a few hit, but no hookups.Tried kastmasters, roostertails, an SR-5, and even tried drowning some powerbait.  Saw the4 fish on the FF but no love for me.  After crazy gluing my rudder back together Saturday afternoon I was able try some trolling, and explore the lake away from the camp waters.  Didn't have much time as it was close to dinner time and I wasn't going to miss those "Mandogs"!  Adam kicked the Mandogs up a notch with the chilli!

It was a fun, first kayak in camp trip for me!  Looking forward to the next time I can join another one of these!

Troy

Before I start releasing my pics, I just want to thank those who participated in this little gathering - especially to the Friday crew  :smt002 Despite the rain, spirits were high and we were eventually rewarded with "dryness" later in the night around the camp grill. After devouring the delicious ribs from Willie, my Soy Vey chicken thighs, Troy's finger-lickin-good steak marinate and Compa's rice...from some other country :smt102 and many more other dishes (could not keep track), I sat on my chair and could not get up for 3 hours (despite many attempts to gather some delicious brownies from Janice). I felt like an Anaconda that just had a whole antelope for dinner  :smt118 Many thanks to those who brough firewood....Troy was very generous by making another trip back to the parking lot to grab more for Saturday night. Thanks also to Ben / Guitarzan for lending his canoe for the easier transport services  :smt023 It was also nice to see the turn out on Saturday - the weather definitely improved and the socializing, eating, fishing and drinking made the day even better.

It was nice seeing Stuart and Fred's family drop by the campsite (just for the day) to do a little fishing with the younglings.

As far as fishing...I had a great time and caught a little bit of everything (love Del Valle for that :smt045 ) and mostly from the shore. Two rainbows (released) casting a super duper and a kast master. 3 Catfish and one 19-inch striper soaking minnows. Convinced one LMB to hit my Shad Rapala trolling my yak along the drop offs. Thanks to Ben for letting me fish off his canoe! (talk about relaxing :smt045)

It was nice - for a change, to simply have an NCKA gathering which focused more on the "getting to know each other" rather than the just the fishing itself. And besides, not everyone likes to fish for competition....it's just simply about "being out there"  :camp RELAX was the key word of the weekend...we even gave ChuckE a much deserved vacation from his deep frying skillzzz  :smt002

Ditto.  It was sure nice to be able to kick back for a change.  Everything was good, but the BBQ was off the hook.  The Pilipino style BBQ pork that Kiel "ReelKnots" brought was incredible.  I'm salivating just thinking about it.

I had a great time and so did my dog Aki.

We need to do more kayak-in-camping!

Joel, I just wanted to thank you for putting on this get together. I had a great time. Wished I could have stay longer. But it was not in the cards this time. The lunch ( Man dogs ) were great. Thanks Scott for that. The company was fantastic. It was my pleasure meeting all people I have not met before and my pleasure seeing the people I have. As far as fishing I did not put to much time into it I only had a couple of take downs on live minnows. I used most day having a good time chit chatting.  :smt006

Thanks a bunch, Mooch! You sure know how to throw a party!

Aside from the rain and wet gear, the weekend was filled with lots of awesome food and incredible camaraderie. Saturday night was like Comedy Central around the campfire--gotta love this group! I met lots of new-to-me people, learned some new fishing techniques, and even caught my signature hotdog-bun-sized trout. The pix are minimal because I spent most of my time on the water fishing and paddling, but I've attached a few.

I do hope this trip becomes an annual event!

Man, I'm glad I never checked that second door. It was a very interesting weekend: miserable weather followed by gorgeous times. It's a good thing nobody waited until Monday to leave. One thing for sure is I'll never walk my stuff to the campsite again, now that I know it's hilly terrain. I was walking with half-steps at work all day today...very worn out after walking 10 miles in 3 days.

Thanks to Janice, Mooch, Frank, and Chuck for bringing extra yaks for me to try out. I admit I did not really ride as much as spend most of my time recovering from walking the trail. I was bummed that my Optio crapped out on me. In drier times, I'll bring my better camera.

I finally have a chance to check the website.... Another great time time at in the great outdoors with a supurb flock of folks. Food and fishing and chillin' 'fo 'sho! We should do that again soon. Frank, you should ALWAYS bring a guitar, it was great jamming with you, even tho we didnt do it enough...
Spiders are fun. I think we should give the hard fishing reward to Big J 'cause she fished hard all weekend. Second place to Adam. Mooch wins the 100 foot dash to the shore when his pole was going bendo even though he took 5 min to get there... gota get video of that. Mooch got the first 3 or 4 fish of the weekend, you got Mojo Bro! I ended up with a big crappie, a little LMB released, and 4 trout for the smoker.
No pics, my camera drowned...

February to April is usually good. Right across from the launch ramp from 7-8 AM is good time to fish surface flies like royal wulffs or wooly buggers. Let me know if you want to hook up. I wanted to see your stripping basket at BAM but didn't run into you.

Here's my last word on the dry ice use this weekend. Started with 20 pounds on Friday. By the time Sunday afternoon rolled around and all of my can sodas exploded (the beer survived just fine), it was all gone, except for about a pound's worth that I gave to Frank.
I know it degrades a little bit every day, but I suspect the warm car on the warm days accelerated the disappearing act. My beers were to frozen to drink until last night.

Wow, what a difference!  It was darn near a country mile's hike to the water from my tent!   Okay maybe a little over exaggerated, but damn what happened to the water?  Did silicon valley get thirsty all of a sudden?

The "Pinoy Pork" was like meat-candy!
....and the chunksO'pig that Howard created were mouth-watering Hot&tender!
.....not to leave out the GARLIC CLOVE-stuffed Roast that Martin&Co. showed up with(if his friends didn't get out that nite, they wouldn't have to worry about going hungry!)
.....and the Salada de Tomate that Jamie whipped-up!
..... Macaroni Salad was the best i've eaten in a LONG TIME!..who "mastered" that?! I could tell time and love was put into it!

I know I left out a lot, but the wife and I are still recovering from MEAT OVERDOSE!

My wife had a fun time listing to the campfire stories, enjoyed the food and many "characters"

Sure thing Joel. But right now the conditions in Lexington are very similar to those in Del Valle. The lake was drained down very fast in the past month so I expect the fishing to be very slow there as well. But may be that's the practice that you need to know if it's working for you.

I am very flexible with time. Hit me when you have some time and I'll see if I can make it.  :smt002

Sure Scott. May be the 3 of us could take a field trip over there in a week or 2. Lexington is down to the low 20 percentile in capacity right now. If it remains at that for a while, we may be able to find some fish. But it will be a long haul to the boat ramp since it is closed. It may be just as easy to launch from the highway side right now!  :smt005

Sounds great. Will be in Boston for a week but 10/27 is open. We could also hit san pablo before the closure. Scott

:smt005

That's the weekend that I meant.

I have nver fished San Pablo I have heard there were some big bass in there but it's a difficult lake to fish. That would be interesting.

Wow, What can I say that has not already been said? The Rain, yeah, that sucked, I was soaked before I left the dock, after the 2 load, it ceased and desisted, soaked to the undies as someone put it. I like rain!! (btw the reason the water is being let out is because its the rainy season now, (lets not have another don pedro)):-) The Food: omg, where do I start, Willie's Ribs? scrumptious, Troy Steaks? tender, Kiel's pork? on time! Janice's Brownie? where were they? were they "special?" I didn't get one... Compa's Peruvian Rice/Tomato salad, (who would have guess) lol, HoJo's extra tangy buckets of joy? BOO YA! man dogs....(Ketchup is for children) etc etc etc. Way too much food. Next time I'll bring bag of chips like I think I read someone had posted before the event. haha .The Fishing: Did you SEE my stringer? (in page 3),(Thanks for the donations) :-) The Fire: with out that, where would we hang out and laugh at the expense of others.? The Dogs. I loved the doggie Tricks by Aki!! very well behaved! and dog gone smart. The People: This was the best part of the trip, I didnt know a soul when I got there now I feel like I have bunch of new friends. In no particular order... Joel, (you the best and you know it) Adam & Barbara. Janice, Hojo, Compa, Ken, Ben, Keil,ChuckE, Sara & Pat, Scott, Frank, Sonny, 152 Sumo and all the other really really nice people I met and can't remember their names. Lets Fish!!  I agree we should do this more often.. Favorite quote, "Hey Joel you got a bite... " Joel, "dont touch my rod." 3 hours and a deer later, "Hey Joel you got another bite.. " Joel, Hey can you get that for me?" haha, you guys are great!

OK all this talk of MAN DOGS is sorta pissin me off :smt013 . Joel Correct me if I am wrong but I believe I coined the Term MAN DOG at Mendo last year on  a Camp out with Joel, Adam and  Lurker Dan and I doubt if most of you have had the chance to hold one in your hand. I think Joel is misleading you. So to prove my point in the pict below you will see a Mooch Dog on the top and a MAN DOG below I don't think you can can compare the two, but we all know Fisherman have been known to Stretch the Truth.  :smt044

Mike,   it's an OFFICIAL ManDog only after it gets circum-sliced by Mooch.   I remember that conversation and it was based on the small-sized(KiddieDog) for kids. Compared the a LARGE DOG made to satisfy a MAN!, hence the term.    once ketchup is on it? it gets declassified and demoted down to kiddiedog. It's got to LOADED-UP with stuff to be a MANDOG!

Oh crap here we go again a true MANDOG does not need anything to be satisfying if you have to stick it in a Bun to fill you up it's not a MANDOG. :smt012

Sounds to me like MickFish is claiming trademark infringement  (or something similar) :smt044

it's not a man dog if it's not a man dog.

I drive by Lexington every day, and yes it's really low now, but it's been a lot lower! theres a section of pavement that gets exposed, on the highway side when the water is so low that the coves are high & dry.  I'm sure it's close to being exposed, but I haven't seen it yet.

OK...since I'am the CREATOR of the Man-Dog....I will provide the "official" definition.....

The Man-Dog:

1) Has to be longer than the hot dog bun itself (no need to go crazy on the lenght of the dog itself...after all, not all dogs are gifted :smt002)
2) Has to be circum-sliced (by Mooch himself or anyone approved by the Mooch)
3) Ketchup IS the KEY ingredient regardless of what anybody says! (mustard and relish is simply an add on)
4) When the Man-Dog is topped with the extra "bling bling" (Fish Hunter's chili beans with some shredded cheese) then the Man-Dog has now been upgraded to "Man-Dog with extra Bling"

I'll be coming up with a book (DVD also available) on the proper techniques of prepping the Man-Dog...and I will also be doing a book-signing at the local mall the weekend after the release of the said book. If you want a free copy with my autograph, send me a PM.....and I'll see what I can do.

By the way, I'd like to add on to rule # 3 (because I'm the creator, thus, I CAN)

*Ketchup should not only be "poured" but "smeared" (with a proper knife) "into" the ridges of the man-dog.

I am so relieved that ketchup is sanctioned after all. There was no ketchup at Del Valle, just mustard. And I thought Adam was downing the chili beans all by himself.  :smt010

....I did have 2 M-dogs w/all the toppings and had an Xtra big can, but no one responded when I asked if it needed to be busted out.

Talk DIRTY! :smt007       the "ManDogMaster" has spoken  :director:

Oh trust me Hojoman, Adam was not the only one making a dent in that chili!  After that "Carnivore carnival meat feast" I was feeling :fat  Topping it all off with Janice's brownies? yum.  I was definitely in need of my camp chair!
  Oh yeah, messylicious!

Hey! Troy! What are you saying? I was wearing an orange fishing shirt all weekend.  :smt005  The Pilipino pork received a lot of attention from me, as did Willie's (Starlifter) ribs. But sure did miss Mooch's lumpia.

OMG the ribs?  How'd I forget about them?  I guess after my skirt steaks, Man-dogs, chicken, pork, a few Corona's, there they were just sitting on the table!  I helped put a dent in them as well.  I've always said "I eat better while camping"  That trip was proof!

Joel don't you mean Moocher not Creater? I checked the History of the NCKA and see no referances to the MANDOG before Mendo last year. :smt012

If you have to add anything to a MANDOG then is is just a Sandwhich.
Rule #1 sorta scares me, don't come anywhere near my MANDOG with a knife if you poke or cut it it just drys it out haven't you seen the Johnsonville AD.

This sounds like an issue that really needs resolution.  I think a mock-trial is in order.

How about a MBF  Cook off  :chef: An added bonus to the Original MANDOGS is if you can't finish it you have catfish bait or you can always plug your scuppers with it. I like to see a MOOCHDOG do that. :smt044

For those who picked up a DVD last weekend and might be having issues with it, a few reminders:

1. Plays on a computer only
2. Requires a DVD player...a CD player won't do.
3. Autoloading will take up to 2 to 3 minutes...it will seem like the program is frozen...be PATIENT!! After the program loads, you can take control.

The ones I gave out months ago was on a CD. But this version contains many more images, therefore the need for a DVD disc.

Enjoy!
Howard

It will act like it's frozen because the system is searching for the executable program file which is probably at the very end of the search string. So, figure that for 2300-plus files ont he disc, 2 to 3 minutes search is still pretty darn fast. And the disc is only half full. Can you imagine the start-up time then!?!
