Title: Coppers, Grassies, and Monkeys Oh My! A DOTY Update
Post by: Yowlie on December 20, 2015, 09:58:41 AM
Congrats to Bigjim on his Copper!  He went out during what looked like a narrow weather window and found a pretty elusive fish.  That puts him back on top by almost 100 points.  Congrats BigJim on being the first to reach 17 varieties!!!!!

http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/leaderboard/list

But Matt Damanij Lopez is lurking, and he is short a grassy (Jjjjjjjeremy knows this problem), and just about any grassy will get him back into first.

lorikay2, almost tied with Matt, is short a copper, and any copper, almost, would get him back into first, as well.

There are some expert divers lower in the rankings who can move up a lot of spots quickly, too.  Sean Otter and blOOdbath are having good years, with great averages, but they lack halibut.

LiveAlohaKris can move up, though, with a grassy and a copper, but with the coppers we've seen, this won't move him into first.

Adam415 needs a grassy and a Blue, however, so he could pick up 300-400 points pretty quick, and these projections aren't counting upgrades.

TheFlyingDutchman could see some big movement with a Cabezon and a Scallop, but it takes a hell of a scallop to get up to 170.

And let's not forget IceColdChuck, and StinkyPete.  These guys have whopping averages, nice halibut, and six fish left each.  Both need more than 900 points, but could easily shoot up with some kelpy, grassy, greenling, B&Y, copper, and black shooting.

The defending champion has some great entires but a lot of fish to post!  Can Nelson Kwok come out of the depths again to take home the kayak?  It would take a champion effort.

There are other really good divers I haven't mentioned (Deke, Speardive, Rob102 and more), mostly because of the lack of a halibut or just too many fish to go.  Great job to these guys, too.  And great job to the divers who have put in some serious hustle and water time, like Nick F. and DG and others who kept the pros out of the top spots for weeks and months and pushed themselves to harvest new fish.

The weather is angry, so it looks like a couple days after Christmas might see a flotilla of these guys stealthily hitting the water.  Just don't ask them if you can tag along . . . .  :smt003

Happy Holidays and good luck everyone.  Thanks DOTY Committee for all your hard work, especially BigJim.  And Thanks Jackson Kayak for donating the grand prize, and supporting charity and Northern California Diving.

As much as I love what  DOTY is and does for everyone I was never expecting to win with such great divers participating.

A lot of firsts and PBs for me.

Great run down Yowlie and congrats to your great year.  I knew BigJim would find a way out and get what he needed especially since the water down south has been a little better than up north even though not by much.

I have had a blast meeting new divers and looking for new species.  My first black and yellow changed colors when I got it out of water and I thought it was a grassy.  It's so nice to be able to just glance at a fish now and know what it is instead of guessing.  That was one of the best things about DOTY besides having the entry money go to good causes.

Good luck to all on the last couple of weeks of this year and I hope more people participate in the coming year as it really does help you become a better diver/fisherman.

I love this... my goal for my first year was 25th or better (there are some great divers here).

Kris took the lead with his last few species, Lorikay has made a comeback and is in 2nd but not sure if it will be enough??

http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/leaderboard/list

Matt is out there right now looking for his grassy and Deke is with him racking up all the species he didn't enter before he signed up in August.

Adam confessed to me last night that he actually has more points than Kris and will enter his fish by 12/31.  :smt005 :smt044

Matt, Deke, Adam, Nelson, DG and I dove Sur yesterday and everybody slayed it. I got upgrades on Verm and Sheep (new PB for me!), and Gopher....but not enough...I think I'll end up in 5th place again like last year.  :smt005

It's on! And but the way I screwed up my projections.  Adam also had a perch to add and Kris didn't need a grassy and copper.  He needed an olive, monkey, and copper and he got all three on Saturday. Deke has posted his 6 species haul and has knocked Bloodbath out of 6th. Matt got a grassy today and should go to 2nd or higher. But we are waiting to see what others will post.  Nelson, Chuck, Pete, Aaron? Remember btw that the rules state "no 'hoarding' of entries."

I'm not sure if I had a grassy or kelpies so I'm gonna have to have Jim take a look at them.

Verbatim

"12. Entries must be posted within 2 weeks of being taken and photographed. No "hoarding" of entries. "

I took it as addressing two separate issues.  Otherwise the second sentence is superfluous. But I can certainly see your point.

For DOTY/AOTY purposes "hoarding" is considered taking more than 2 weeks to post an entry.

Except for the end of the year when we ask people to post by 12/31 so that we can announce winner on 1/1 and I can move forward with getting 1st/2nd/3rd places to Piscean and big fish info to the award makers.

Obviously there is a little "gamesmanship" that can go in during this final stretch (not knowing if your competitor has more than what is posted and if you need to go out and get more etc) and that is to be expected and is fine.  :smt003

In second place with 13 hours left to go!

My prediction is that Matt, Adam or Steve will take first...and that Kris will be 4th and I will be 5th.

We'll see!!
